Vibe magazine

Founded in 1993 by Quincy Jones and Time Warner, Vibe was an iconic brand for 16 years, responsible for setting trends among hip hop and mainstream culture. Vibe was then bought by miller publishing in 1996, who shortly after bought spin.

The publication features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers.

The magazine and online websites are for the young, urban followers of hip-hop culture.

Vibe magazine appeals to “12- 24 year old”, both boys and girls (quoted from the president of vibe magazine – keith clinkscales) Although on the vibe media pack the average age of vibe readers is 27.

Vibe and NME magazine

These magazines concentrate on different parts of the music industry. Vibe magazine tends to focus on RnB, whereas NME focus on punk rock, indie music, etc. vibe and NME magazine are similar in some ways as they both tend to take medium shots of the artists put onto their magazine. The median age of NME readers is 25 and for vibe it is 18, suggesting that vibe magazine appeals to a younger audience. Also, mostly men read NME magazine (70%), in contrary to the 50%of men that read vibe magazine. This reinforces how unisex vibe magazine is unlike NME. Vibe magazine also came out mush later than NME but over the past couple years vibe magazine has overhauled NME in sells, becoming much more popular than NME.
