1 PrefaceThe Vianect AIR TV from devolo transmits audio andvideo content from a computer to a monitor, TV setor projector � without the need for any cables what-soever, thanks to Wireless USB technology. The in-stallation is as easy as child's play, and with thepreconfigured devices, you can set up the connectionbetween your computer and television or projector inno time.

2 IntroductionWith the Vianect AIR TV, devolo presents a simple so-lution for transmitting multimedia content (in HD qual-ity) from a computer to a big screen such as a flat-screen television or projector. You do not need any ca-bles to do so, as the Vianect AIR TV solution uses Wire-less USB technology. Therefore, in no time, yourtelevision or projector can be used as a second bigscreen. This is ideal for sharing photos or videos withfriends and family or for presenting them in a profes-sional way.

3 Initial useThis chapter covers everything you need to know to setup your Vianect AIR TV. It will explain connecting thedevices and their functions. We will also briefly intro-

3.3 FunctionsThe Vianect AIR TV enables you to transmit audio andvideo data wirelessly from a computer to your TV set orprojector. The individual components – Vianect AIRcomputer adapter and Vianect AIR TV station withadapter are preconfigured ("paired") at the factoryand are ready to use immediately.

Should you ever lose the preconfiguration("pairing") of the devices, it can be restoredeasily. For more information, refer to Chap-ter 3.7 Restoring the pairing.

3.3.1 Vianect AIR computer adapterConnections and LEDs of the computer adapter

The computer adapter is used for connection to thedesktop or laptop computer. It has a rotating USBconnector (depending on the placement of the USBsocket on the computer) and an integrated antenna.

The Power LED is illuminated in blue when thecomputer adapter is ready to operate; it flashes duringdata transmission.

3.3.2 Vianect AIR TV stationConnections of the station

In addition to the power jack for connection to themains supply, the station has

� One HDMI socket for connection to a projector orTV set

� One VGA socket for connection to a projector orTV set

� One 3.5 mm jack socket (audio) for connectionto a TV set, projector or stereo system

Connections and LEDs of the TV adapter

The TV adapter is used for the connection to the USBsocket of the station. It has a USB connector and anintegrated antenna.

The Power LED is illuminated in blue when the TVadapter is ready to operate, i.e. the station is suppliedwith current. The Power LED flashes during datatransmission.

3.4 Setup instructionsYou can mount the Vianect AIR TV station on the wallor position it on a level surface. The TV adapter is

� You can configure your screen settings using thedevolo Vianect AIR TV DisplayLink Manager.

To install the software, insert the included CD-ROM inthe CD drive of your computer and click InstallVianect AIR TV. If autoplay is installed on yourcomputer, the installation will start automatically.Otherwise, open the folder with the Windows Explorerby right-clicking on Start and selecting Explorer fromthe context menu. Double-click to start the installationwizard manually.

You can find the installed software applications in theStart � All Programs � devolo program group.

Then, continue with the hardware installation (see 3.6Connecting the Vianect AIR TV).

3.5.2 Software for Mac OS XFor the devolo Vianect AIR Manager andVianect AIR TV DisplayLink Manager software foroperating the devices in Mac OS (min. Mac OS X 10.5Leopard), visit the download area of theVianect AIR TV on our website, www.devolo.com.The included product CD contains a link,Mac OS X Software-Download, which takes youdirectly there if you have an active Internet connection.

The Vianect AIR TV station can be usedin conjunction with a TV adapter (in-cluded) only. The slider above the USBsockets is used only to select a USBsocket.

To attain optimum data transmission be-tween the TV adapter and computer adapter,both devices should be placed within sight ofeach other. During initial installation, we alsorecommend a maximum distance of up to 3meters.

3.5 Software installationWhen installing or uninstalling thedevolo software, the computer adaptermust not be connected to the compu-ter.

3.5.1 Software for WindowsUse the installation wizard to set up the following soft-ware components for using the Vianect AIR TV withthe Windows operating system:

� The devolo Vianect AIR Manager shows allwireless Vianect AIR TV stations within the possi-ble range.

Uninstalling the software

To uninstall the Vianect AIR Managersoftware, open the installation pack-age downloaded earlier and select Un-installer.

To uninstall theVianect AIR TV DisplayLink Managersoftware, click the Uninstaller link un-der Apple � Programs.

3.6 Connecting the Vianect AIR TVIn this section, we show you how to connect the indi-vidual components of the Vianect AIR TV.

When the devices are connecting for thefirst time, the screen can flicker orswitch on and off briefly. The detectionof the computer adapter on the compu-ter is indicated by audio signals.

� Insert the computer adapter into an available USBsocket of your computer.

� Plug the TV adapter into the USB socket providedon the station.

� To install the devolo software, download the cor-responding installation packages to your compu-ter:

� Vianect AIR Manager (drivers for MAC OS X 10.5 Leopard) or

� Vianect AIR Manager (drivers for MAC OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard)

� Vianect AIR TV DisplayLink Manager (software for Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6)

� Open the Vianect AIR Manager installationpackage by double-clicking. The CD icon forVianect AIR TV appears on the desktop; double-click this also. A dialogue window opens.

� Then follow the prompts of the installation wizard.

After successful installation, theVianect AIR Manager icon appearsin the toolbar.

� Double-click to open the installation package forthe Vianect AIR TV DisplayLink Manager(Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 software). Adialogue window opens.

� Then follow the prompts of the installation wizard.

� Finally, continue with the hardware installation(see 3.6 Connecting the Vianect AIR TV).

� If you want to connect additional TV sets or pro-jectors, simply repeat steps � to � for eachdevice.

3.7 Restoring the pairingTo again configure the devices, proceed as follows:

� If you have not done so already, install the pro-vided devolo software on your computer. (seeChapter 3.5 Software installation)

� Then insert the computer adapter into an availa-ble USB socket of your computer.

� Remove the computer adapter and, in its place,plug the TV adapter into the now available USBsocket of your computer. After a few seconds, amessage appears stating that the pairing iscompleted.

Observe the setup instructions listed inthe previous section. (see 3.4 Setup in-structions)

� To connect the Vianect AIR TV station to a TV setor projector via HDMI, connect both devices viaan HDMI cable; digital image and sound dataare transmitted via the HDMI cable simultane-ously.

� To connect the Vianect AIR TV station to a TV setor projector via VGA (image transmission), con-nect both devices via a VGA cable. For soundtransmission, connect the 3.5 mm jack sock-ets of the devices (TV set, projector or stereo sys-tem) via a cable with 3.5 mm jack plug.

If the sound transmission does not work au-tomatically after complete and correct instal-lation of the hardware and software, in thesounds and audio devices properties, underAudio select as the default device for soundplayback USB PnP Sound device. The Vianect AIR computer adapter is not plugged in.

4 Vianect AIR Manager The devolo Vianect AIR Manager monitors all reacha-ble Vianect AIR TV stations and shows their connectionstatus.

After successful installation, call up the program viathe devolo Vianect AIR Manager link created onthe desktop or by clicking in the Windows tool-bar.

The appearance of the icon changes to provide infor-mation about the current connection status of the de-vices:

Connected

The wireless connection to the Vianect AIR TV stationexists.

The Vianect AIR computer adapter is switched on.

The computer adapter is switched on and connected tothe computer; no wireless connection exists.

4.1 Calling up the configuration interface

In Advanced settings... you can check the region,channel quality, the current channel and thespeed. All values are configured optimally by defaultand do not need to be changed.

The corresponding bar graph provides informationabout the current connection quality of the devices:

� Disabled – The connection between the compu-ter adapter and TV adapter is interrupted.

� Not connected – The computer adapter is notconnected to the computer.

� Connected – The wireless connection to theVianect AIR TV station exists.

� Average connection quality

� Good connection quality

� Under Properties..., you can define whether youwant a status message.

Using the context menu of a displayed Vianect AIRTV station (accessed by right-clicking the respective TVstation), you can reach the following functions:

� You can temporarily disable the station (Blockremote device), i.e. configure that the computeradapter cannot establish a connection to the TVstation.

� Disconnect the station (Disassociate reotedevice), i.e. remove it from the network; thisdevice is then deleted from the list.

In the event of disconnection, the de-vices lose the mutual preconfiguration("pairing"), i.e. if used again, thesemust be reconfigured first. For moreinformation, refer to Chapter 3.7 Re-storing the pairing.

� Renaming the Vianect AIR TV station.

5 Vianect AIR TV DisplayLink Manager

The Vianect AIR TV DisplayLink Manager helps youconfigure the screen settings of your TV set or projec-tor. Depending on the application, select one of thepossible working modes:

� Mirror mode – Screen content of the computer isreflected exactly to the TV set or projector.

� Extended mode – Television or projector screenserves as screen extension

In the factory defaults, theVianect AIR TV is set to mirroring.

5.1 Mirror modeThe mirror mode reflects the screen display of thecomputer identically to the TV set or projector. This set-ting is particularly useful for applications such as pres-entations or slide shows. This allows slide content,

5.2 Extended mode The extended mode is particularly useful for playingback different content on each screen. In this case,the screen connected via the Vianect AIR TV adapterserves as an expansion or addition to the computerscreen. The advantage: individual images positionednext to each other can be "joined together" to create acomposite image; this allows you to view multiple ap-plications simultaneously so you can work in them. Ex-tended mode is ideally suited for playing back HDvideos (1280 x 720).

5.3 Configuration in Windows 7 Windows 7 supports the connection of external screensby default. Call up the corresponding menu by pressingthe Windows and P keys simultaneously.

� Select Computer only if you are working via thecomputer screen exclusively.

� Select Duplicate to configure mirror mode.

� Select Extend to configure extended mode.

� Select Projector only if you work with a con-nected laptop screen and want to operate theexternal screen connected via the Vianect AIR TVadapter using the keyboard and mouse of the lap-top.

As soon as a connection to the Vianect AIR TV adapteris established, the icon of theVianect AIR TV DisplayLink Manager appears inthe Windows toolbar. By clicking this icon, you canreach the display settings.

� Clicking the Check for updates... option takesyou automatically to our website atwww.devolo.com and notifies you of any soft-ware updates.

� Enable the Optimize for video option to attainthe best possible image quality for HD videos.

� Configure extended mode by selectingExtend these displays.

� To define the external screen as the mainscreen, select the corresponding device underDisplay and enable the option Use this screenas main screen.

� Under Advanced..., you are provided with addi-tional setting options for the screen resolution:

� Display: From the drop-down menu (or by click-ing the respective screen icon), select the screenthat is connected to the Vianect AIR TV adapter.

� Resolution: Select the desired resolution on theexternal screen.

� Orientation: Select portrait or landscape format.

� Multiple displays:

� Configure mirror mode by selecting Dupli-cate these displays.

If the connected screen supports only a lower resolu-tion than the primary screen, it adjusts to the lower res-olution. If the connected screen is larger than the firstselected one, the displayed content is enclosed in aframe to maintain the aspect ratio.

Enable the option Notebook Monitor Off if you workwith closed laptop screen and want to operate the ex-ternal screen connected via the Vianect AIR TV usingthe keyboard and mouse of the laptop connected.

5.4.2 Configuring extended modeAs soon as a connection to the Vianect AIR TV adapteris established, the icon of theVianect AIR TV DisplayLink Manager appears inthe Windows toolbar. If you click this icon, you are tak-en to the display settings.

5.4 Configuration in Windows XP/Vista During the configuration, the computerscreen switches off and on again brieflyuntil the screen resolution has adjusted.

5.4.1 Configuring mirror modeAs soon as a connection to the Vianect AIR TV adapteris established, the icon of theVianect AIR TV DisplayLink Manager appears inthe Windows toolbar. If you click this icon, you are tak-en to the display settings.

Select the entry Mirror.

The Screen resolution and Color Quality of the firstselected screen are transferred automatically to thescreen connected via the Vianect AIR TV adapter.

For additional display settings for extended mode, re-fer to Advanced....

� You can switch the positions of the monitors usingdrag&drop. If you are not sure which monitor isassigned which number, select Identify. Theidentification number of each monitor is shown.

� Display: From the drop-down menu (or by click-ing the respective screen icon), select the screenthat is connected to the Vianect AIR TV adapter.

Select the entry Extend. Using the Extend to option,select the direction in which the image area is to be ex-tended.

Enable the option Notebook Monitor Off if you workwith closed laptop screen and want to operate the ex-ternal screen connected via the Vianect AIR TV usingthe keyboard and mouse of the laptop connected.

To position the window of an application onthe extended image area, minimise thewindow to approximately half size and dragand drop it to the header bar in the extendedarea. Then, readjust the desired size of thewindow.

Any applications that are running, suchas movies, should be stopped beforemoving.

� In the Display drop-down menu, select the moni-tor connected via the Vianect AIR TV adapter.

� Enable the options Extend Windows desktopon this monitor and Use this device as theprimary monitor. Then confirm your settingswith OK.

In Windows Vista, optimise the image qual-ity by selecting the colour scheme Aero.

5.5 Configuration in Mac OS XFor the screen settings, navigate to Apple � SystemPreferences � Monitor.

To configure mirror mode, navigate to Arrangementand enable the option Mirror Displays.

For extended mode, the option Mirror Displays sim-ply remains disabled. The screen icons can be ar-ranged as desired using the mouse, i. e. prioritised.

Using the tabs Display and Color, you can configureadditional settings for the screen.

� To disconnect the Vianect AIR TV station from thepower supply grid, pull out the plug.

� Do not expose the devices to direct sunlight.

� Slits and apertures in the case are intended toprovide ventilation and must not be blocked orcovered.

� The devices must not be set up in close proximityto a radiator.

� The devices should be installed only in locationsthat ensure adequate ventilation.

� Disconnect the devices from the power supply gridbefore cleaning. Never use water, paint thinner,benzene, alcohol or other strong cleaning agentswhen cleaning the devices, as these could dam-age the case. Only use a slightly moist soft cloth.

� The Vianect AIR TV station should be operatedexclusively on a public power supply as describedon the rating plate.

� In the event of damage, disconnect the VianectAIR TV station from the mains supply, unplug thecomputer adapter from the computer and contactyour after-sales service. Damage is deemed tohave occurred

� if the power cable or plug is damaged

� if the devices are sprayed with liquid or ifobjects have got inside the devices

6.1 Important safety instructionsIt is essential to have read and understood all safetyand operating instructions before the device is used forthe first time; these should then be kept safely for fu-ture reference.

� The devices must not be opened. There are nouser-serviceable parts inside the device.

Do not attempt to service the productyourself; call on qualified techniciansfor assistance with all service tasks!There is a danger of electric shock!

�Use the devices only in a dry location.

� Do not insert any objects in the openings in thedevices.

a) The warranty covers the equipment delivered and all its parts.Parts will, at devolo's sole discretion, be replaced or repairedfree of charge if, despite proven proper handling and adher-ence to the operating instructions, these parts became defec-tive due to fabrication and/or material defects. Alternatively,devolo reserves the right to replace the defective product witha comparable product with the same specifications and fea-tures. Operating manuals and possibly supplied software areexcluded from the warranty.

b) Material and service charges shall be covered by devolo, butnot shipping and handling costs involved in transport from thebuyer to the service station and/or to devolo.

c) Replaced parts become property of devolo.

d) devolo is authorized to carry out technical changes (e.g.firmware updates) beyond repair and replacement of defectiveparts in order to bring the equipment up to the current techni-cal state. This does not result in any additional charge for thecustomer. A legal claim to this service does not exist.

2 Warranty period

The warranty period for this devolo product is three years. Thisperiod begins at the day of delivery from the devolo dealer. War-ranty services carried out by devolo do not result in an extension ofthe warranty period nor do they initiate a new warranty period. Thewarranty period for installed replacement parts ends with the war-ranty period of the device as a whole.

� if the devices have been exposed to rain orwater

� if the devices do not work, despite the factthat all operating instructions have been fol-lowed properly

� if the cases of the devices have been dam-aged.

6.2 Disposal of old devicesThe icon with crossed-out wastebasket on the devicemeans that this adapter is an electrical or electronicdevice that falls within the scope of application of theGerman Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act. Since24 March 2006, these types of devices may no longerbe disposed of with household waste. Rather, in Ger-many, they can be given to a municipal collection pointfree of charge. Contact your municipal government tofind out the address and hours of the nearest collectionpoint.

6.3 Warranty conditionsThe devolo AG warranty is given to purchasers of devolo products inaddition to the warranty conditions provided by law and in accord-ance with the following conditions:

5 Operating mistakes

If it becomes apparent that the reported malfunction of the devicehas been caused by unsuitable hardware, software, installation oroperation, devolo reserves the right to charge the purchaser for theresulting testing costs.

6 Additional regulations

The above conditions define the complete scope of devolo's legalliability.

a) The warranty gives no entitlement to additional claims, such asany refund in full or in part. Compensation claims, regardlessof the legal basis, are excluded. This does not apply if e.g.injury to persons or damage to private property are specificallycovered by the product liability law, or in cases of intentionalact or culpable negligence.

b) Claims for compensation of lost profits, indirect or consequen-tial detriments, are excluded.

c) devolo is not liable for lost data or retrieval of lost data incases of slight and ordinary negligence.

d) In the case that the intentional or culpable negligence ofdevolo employees has caused a loss of data, devolo will be lia-ble for those costs typical to the recovery of data where peri-odic security data back-ups have been made.

e) The warranty is valid only for the first purchaser and is nottransferable.

f) The court of jurisdiction is located in Aachen, Germany in thecase that the purchaser is a merchant. If the purchaser doesnot have a court of jurisdiction in the Federal Republic of Ger-many or if he moves his domicile out of Germany after conclu-sion of the contract, devolo's court of jurisdiction applies. Thisis also applicable if the purchaser's domicile is not known atthe time of institution of proceedings.

g) The law of the Federal Republic of Germany is applicable. TheUN commercial law does not apply to dealings between devoloand the purchaser.

3 Warranty procedure

a) If defects appear during the warranty period, the warrantyclaims must be made immediately, at the latest within a periodof 7 days.

b) In the case of any externally visible damage arising from trans-port (e.g. damage to the housing), the person carrying out thetransportation and the sender should be informed immedi-ately. On discovery of damage which is not externally visible,the transport company and the sender are to be immediatelyinformed in writing, at the latest within 3 days of delivery.

c) Transport to and from the location where the warranty claim isaccepted and/or the repaired device is exchanged, is at thepurchaser's own risk and cost.

d) Warranty claims are only valid if a copy of the original pur-chase receipt is returned with the device. devolo reserves theright to require the submission of the original purchase receipt.

4 Suspension of the warranty

All warranty claims will be deemed invalid

a) if the label with the serial number has been removed from thedevice,

b) if the device is damaged or destroyed as a result of acts ofnature or by environmental influences (moisture, electricshock, dust, etc.),

c) if the device was stored or operated under conditions not incompliance with the technical specifications,

d) if the damage occurred due to incorrect handling, especially tonon-observance of the system description and the operatinginstructions,

e) if the device was opened, repaired or modified by persons notcontracted by devolo,

f) if the device shows any kind of mechanical damage, or

g) if the warranty claim has not been reported in accordance with3a) or 3b).
