UIC Standardisation Platform

Why? Initiated in December 2012

Missions: Missions:1. Definition of detailed strategies on standardisation implementing the

guidelines given from UIC members2. Increase the value of the UIC Leaflets defining their evolution: International

Railway Standards and Joint Standards3. Coordination of standardisation activities to be developed by the different

UIC Forums4. Establishment of proper agreements with the other Standardisation

Institutions

UIC Standardisation Strategy

Standardisation Targets Highlights

1. Balance and optimise resources, targets and innovation.

2. Real opportunity for cooperation and integration of best

practices and outcomes and processes.

3. Development of UIC standardisation based on an increased

d lidand solid consensus.

4. International Railway Standards written by the Railway

Operating Community: enter in the new era of the RailwayOperating Community: enter in the new era of the Railway

System.

5. Assert and progress in the complementarity principle with

regard to other standardisation organisations.

INTERNATIONAL RAILWAY STANDARDS

An IRS consists of:

1. A Common Part: that contains all the elementsagreed by everybody..

UIC Standardisation StrategyAPPLICATION: 1520mm SYSTEM

The International Railway Standards offer an efficient possibility to the developmentof standards for the 1520mm OSJD system.

The redaction of IRSs allows to make immediately available new, existing or underdevelopment OSJD standards into suitable documentsdevelopment OSJD standards into suitable documents.

The concrete results now available allows working simultaneously on the differentsystems according to the various needed situations.

UIC Standardisation StrategyNOWNOW ‐ UPDATING OF UIC LEAFLETS

1. 120 Leaflets to be updated in IRS format in 5 years, i.e. 24 on average peryear.year.

2. 20 leaflets in 2013 :‐> 14 on Rolling Stock Sector‐> 14 on Rolling Stock Sector,‐> 2 on Energy Sector,‐> 3 on Infrastructure> 1 on Passengers‐> 1 on Passengers

3. A strong governance to manage the process has been put in place.

1. Railway Operating Rules will be IRSs defining the human operationsconnected to the railway system and its interfaces at a worldwide level as aconnected to the railway system and its interfaces, at a worldwide level as acondition for design of the next generation of railway transports.

Standardisation Platform Action Plan

HOW?1. Encourage continuous improvement of UIC standards as irreplaceable to

operate the railway service.

2. Endorse the clusters’ concepts and support the implementation of theproposed ones ( freight corridors, High Speed, etc.).

3. Carry out the IRS concept, with first examples with all stakeholders in themost suitable format :

‐> Partnering with regulation bodies: OSJD, CRT, IEC, …‐> Partnering with standard issuing members; CARS (China), VNIIZhT(Russia), RTRI (Japan), …( uss a), (Japa ),
