Events in 2013 / Dates for your diary

I would especially like to draw your attention to the enclosed Brochure that we have produced to commemorate the School’s 150th Anniversary. It has been produced to acknowledge our immense gratitude for the support we have received from so many of our veterinary graduates.

In this edition you will read about the celebratory Vet150 weekend in October 2012 that was the culmination of the School’s 150th anniversary celebrations. It was wonderful to see so many of our Vet Alumni and friends of the Vet School at the celebratory Banquet and Ceilidh on Saturday 6 October.

Our fundraising for the Vet Fund continues and has been enhanced with the launch of the James Herriot Scholarship Fund during 2012. Bequests continue to make a huge impact to the work of the Vet School and we are indebted to those people who have chosen to leave a gift in their will to the School of Veterinary Medicine. The Vet School has been able to fund a number of postgraduate students and purchase essential equipment for the Small Animal Hospital thanks to bequests received during 2012.

Our thanks again to the ongoing support the Vet Fund receives from the GUMVA Student body, in particular the GUVMA Rodeo Committee, who recently handed over a cheque for £5,000 to the Vet Fund raised as part of the 2012 Rodeo. These funds were directed to the Small Animal Hospital Fund. We are delighted to include a piece in this newsletter from our current GUVMA Co-Presidents.

We thank everyone who has supported the Vet Fund and we hope that Glasgow Vet School will continue to benefit from this level of commitment in the years ahead.

Professor Peter Holmes OBE FRCVS FRSEChair, Vet Fund Advisory Board

With my best wishes to you for 2013 and a special welcome to our 2012 Vet Graduates, including our first graduates from the Veterinary Biosciences course, who have joined the Glasgow Veterinary School family that stands at over 3,500 graduates spread across the world.

Welcome from Professor Peter Holmes

Veterinary Biosciences Graduates 2012

BVMS Class of 2012

Professor Andrea Nolan, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University formally launched the celebrations in front of an audience of around 600 in the Bute Hall on Friday 5 October. The ‘Vet 150 New Horizons Research Symposium’ provided both an historical and current perspective on veterinary research at Glasgow.

The day provided the opportunity to hear from internationally renowned scientists who in the past have shaped veterinary research through their links with the University and the people they have trained who continue with their ground-breaking work. At the close of the symposium, the School recognised the contribution of those individuals who served the School in the office of ‘Dean of Veterinary Medicine’ by the presentation of inaugural ‘McCall Celebratory Medals’. Sir James Armour, Professor Norman Wright, Professor Andrea Nolan and Professor Stuart Reid were all in attendance and received their medals from the Head of School, Professor Ewan Cameron. Dr Ian MacLean and Professor David Bennett accepted medals on behalf of Professor Bill Mulligan and Professor Donald Lawson, who were unable to attend in person.

Vet 150 Celebrations: 5–7 October 2012The symposium included a Civic Welcome from Baillie Martin Docherty representing the Right Honourable Lord Provost of the City of Glasgow, and concluded with the Professor James McCall Memorial Lecture, delivered by Professor Stuart Reid, Principal of the Royal Veterinary College, London.

On Saturday there was a three streamed CPD lecture programme (small animal, equine and farm animal) and a commercial exhibition, and on Sunday there was an interactive modular programme with practical sessions.

The social programme included a magnificent gala banquet in the Hunter Halls at the University, followed by a ceilidh in the majestic Bute Hall. The celebrations concluded with brunch on Sunday at the Garscube campus. Around 400 alumni took part in the various social events, with graduates from all parts of the UK and from overseas, including Australia, South Africa and the United States, making the weekend a very special occasion for all concerned.

Professor Ewan Cameron said ‘During the course of Friday, Saturday and Sunday I spoke to a large number of our visitors and guests. Quite simply the praise for the weekend was overwhelming. There can be no doubt that the Vet School is a closely knit community and that our alumni retain a love for their ‘alma mater’ long after they have graduated and that alumni, staff or student, we all share the pride in being part of the family that is Glasgow Vet School’.

During 2012 the School of Veterinary Medicine celebrated 150 years since its foundation by James McCall in 1862. This milestone was marked by a special celebratory weekend on 5-7 October 2012 attended by alumni, VIPs, staff, students, veterinary surgeons and friends of the School.

The James Herriot Scholarship Fund now stands at almost £30,000. We are extremely grateful to our donors and we look forward to bringing you news of our James Herriot Scholars in future newsletters. One donor to the James Herriot Scholarship Fund told us why she chose to support this fund with a monthly gift.

“The University offered me an entrance bursary as well as gifting me prize money and it made a considerable difference to my education – I just want to return the favour!” Michaella Prince MA

One way to support the James Herriot Scholarship is by leaving a gift in your Will

By choosing to leave a gift in your will to the James Herriot Scholarship Fund you will be supporting our students of the future.

The Vet Fund – James Herriot Scholarship Fund

1. Your gift will be supporting our students, the vets of tomorrow, through our commitment to excellence in education.

2. Your gift will allow the Vet School to support future generations of vets and the animals in their care and contribute to pioneering future standards in animal treatment and welfare.

3. A gift in your will can commemorate the donor or honour another individual.

4. If you choose to make a larger gift you could fund a full Scholarship allowing your gift to be named in perpetuity.

5. Alternatively you may wish to leave a gift in your will to benefit another area of the Vet School or direct your gift to where the need is greatest.

6. You can choose to give a specific amount or a percentage of whatever is left of your estate after those close to you have been taken care of.

7. All gifts to the Vet School should be directed to the University of Glasgow Trust, for the benefit of the School of Veterinary Medicine. When your gift is eventually received, the Trustees will ensure that the funds are directed in keeping with your wishes.

8. The University of Glasgow Trust is a registered charity. Gifts left to bodies with charitable status are tax exempt.

9. Leaving a gift in your will to the University of Glasgow Trust could reduce your inheritance tax liability.

10. To find out more about giving a gift in your will please contact Sarah Hunter on +44 (0) 141 330 7145, or email [email protected].

Ten things you need to know about leaving a gift in your will to the James Herriot Scholarship Fund

Alf Wight’s son, Jim told us why he is delighted that the Fund is named after his father.

“Through his writing my father gave great prominence to and enhanced the image of the veterinary profession; that continues today. I am certain he would have approved of his name being used to support and train our new generation of Veterinary students. The Vet School at Glasgow was always very close to his heart.” Jim Wight (BVMS 1966) Son of Alf Wight (James Herriot)

The Vet Fund also welcomes gifts to the Small Animal Hospital Fund and Weipers Equine Fund.

2013 Winter VetA

Welcome from GUVMAAs I’m sure most of you will be aware, GUVMA is the Glasgow University Veterinary Medical Association. The GUVMA Committee is a group of elected students who represent the student body at various meetings with staff, and also organise many social events, charity events and educational opportunities such as the Clinical Club.

In true Vet School style this term has seen a plethora of fancy dress parties, from the Welcome Back Party ‘Night at the Movies’ to the more traditional Halloween and Christmas.

AVS Sports Weekend was held in Glasgow in November, with vet students from all over the UK and Dublin descending upon us in their hundreds. I’m sure the variety of outfits from Glasgow’s garden gnomes (and final year Oktoberfest theme) to the other vet schools’ Noah’s Ark, Eskimos and Red Indians to name just a few caused some raised eyebrows in the city centre. It is definitely fair to say Glasgow’s night life lived up to expectations. As predicted the inflatables and ceilidh dancing at the sports

GUVMA Co-Presidents: Ruth Greening and Tom Underwood

ground proved more popular than any real sporting activities, and everyone had a fantastic weekend! (If a little worse for wear on the Monday morning…).

Dick Day was also held in Glasgow in 2012, with a well celebrated triumph over Edinburgh Vet School in a majority of sports.

This special 150th celebratory year also prompted a very well attended and much enjoyed Clinical Club talk from Jim Wight (BVMS 1966) who is the son of our most famous graduate Alf Wight (James Herriot).

We look forward eagerly to many events which are already in the planning for 2013, including the always keenly anticipated ‘Mr Vet School’ and the annual Vet Ball. The GUVMA Rodeo will be held in Garscube Estate on the 13th April 2013, hoping to once again raise thousands of pounds for charity including raising funds for the Vet Fund.

Glasgow Vets around the world

The University has just launched an exciting new initiative called the Glasgow Careers Alumni Network. This will bring together our alumni community in support of the career development of students. There are a number of ways our graduates can help make an impact and we hope the programme will be enjoyable and rewarding for alumni and students alike. We welcome all graduates to get started by submitting their Alumni Profile which will provide inspiration to students before they embark on their own career journey. We are most grateful to our Vet alumni who have already taken time to complete their profile.
