Verona is a city of many layers, whereancient Romans, medieval nobles,Venetian signori, Napoleon, and AustrianHapsburgs, have woven a rich tapestryof art, architecture, and history throughoutits urban fabric. The city's great appeallies in the fact that, from its historic centerto the banks of the Adige River, it is botha bustling, modern northern Italian cityand a living testament to Verona'sglorious past.Begin your exploration of Verona in thecentrally located Piazza Br, where theenormous Arena, a Roman amphitheatrefrom the first century A.D., is located. Tothis day, the Arena still hosts the 22,000spectators attending the prestigious, annual opera season held there eachsummer. Located nearby are the PalazzoBarbieri and Palazzo della Gran Guardia.Along the Liston, an elegant pink marblesidewalk that borders one side of PiazzaBr, and along the Via Mazzini, Verona'smost elegant shopping avenue, theVeronese enjoy a daily, ritual stroll called

Juliet, Shakespeare's tragic heroine.A short distance away, on the site of theancient Roman forum, you will find Piazzadelle Erbe, now home to a local marketand surrounded by buildings and towersdating from the 12th-17th centuries. Adjacent, you will see thebeautiful Arche Scaligere, sepulchralmonuments of Cangrande della Scalaand his family. The characteristic Via Sottoriva takesyou to the banks of the Adige and thechurch of Sant' Anastasia, a repositoryof medieval and Renaissance works ofart. On the other side of the river, justacross the Roman bridge Ponte Pietra, rises the Teatro Romano, the Romantheater. Continuing further along theriver embankment, you will come uponVerona's cathedral, the Duomo, whoseharmonious Gothic interior complementsthe priceless altarpiece by Titian locatedinside.

The wide loop of the river that enclosesthe historical city center ends at aremarkably well-preserved medievalcastle, the Castelvecchio, a 14th centurywork of the Scaligeri, and home to animportant local art museum. • Lessinia, the nearby mountainsThe Lessinia district is situated in thenorthern reaches of the Verona province. The plateau extends as far east asVicenza, as far west as the Val d'Adige, and as far north as the Valle di Ronchi. In 1990 the area was proclaimed aRegional Natural Park, due to the manynatural wonders found there. TheVeronese mountain range, with itssoutherly-exposed Valpantena valley, isa temperate zone located between thePadana Plain and the Alps. The gradualslope of its ridges (100-1800 metersabove sea level), the abundant autumnand spring rainfall of the upper Lessinia, its deep torrential streams, the arid karstof its limestone, and thousands of yearsof human habitation have created anenvironment of great diversity. The olivegroves and Mediterranean vines of thelower hills give rise to the cherry andchestnut orchards of the mid-Lessinia,which then lead to the plateau's alpine

pastures. The sedimentary and volcanicrock (formed in the last 200 million years)are the oldest parts of this rare, environmental mosaic of which the fishfossils of Bolca are the most famous. The story of Lessinia, however, doesn'tend with its geological, pre-historic orethnographic heritage. Several traditionalactivities, such as alpeggio (specializeddairy and cheese production) and stonemasonry continue as economic andcultural pursuits. Some quarries are stilloperational today, and extract Pietra dellaLessinia (the traditional stone of theLessinia region). The principal centres ofthe district are: Grezzana, where theprestigious Villa Arvedi is situated; BoscoChiesanuova and its Museo Etnografico,Erbezzo with the flora and fauna area ofMalga Derocon, S. Anna d'Alfaedo, wherethe Museo Paleontologico is located, and Ponte di Veja, a unique example ofa natural bridge formed by a geological

phenomenon. Markings left on the Grottadell'Orso and other caves formed underthis bridge indicate a use by hunters (oneof whom may have been "Otzi", foundon the Similuan glacier) in pre-historictimes. The Parco delle Cascate di Molina,a natural water oasis, full of rare botanicalspecies, boasts gorgeous canyons, lakesand panoramic lookouts foundthroughout the park. Refreshingly coolin the summer months, the park is alsofascinating during the winter, when itsmany waterfalls freeze over. The Lessiniaeasily reached by publictransportation and served by a varietyof accommodation including hotels, camp sites, and apartmentsoffersnumerous possibilities for both winterand summer tourism. Skiing (on the newlifts of San Giorgio), hiking, and muchmore are yours for the taking. No wonderthe Veronese consider this their "premiermountain".

  • Soave, castles and vinesFor many centuries, on the lower slopesof the Lessinia mountains located in theeastern province of Verona, the volcanicsoil of the Alpone, Tramigna, Illasi andMezzane valleys has provided the idealenvironment for the cultivation ofgarganega grapes and the production ofSoave wine. This wine, considered oneof the great Veronese whites, owes muchto the volcanic origins and emerginglimestone of these hills. In addition toproducing fine wine, Soave is also aterritory rich in castles, churches andancient belltowers. An impressive arrayof historic sites, gastronomic traditions, and picturesque villages are found in thearea, as are a number of businesses, sales outlets, restaurants, culturalattractions, and environmental points ofinterest. Start from the walled town ofSoave, located at the foot of amagnificent, medieval castle. Soave wasalmost certainly reconstructed by theSvevi, followed by the Longobards, andfortified by the Scaliger nobles of Verona.

Examples of their respective rules includethe 18th century church of San Bonifacio, the 15th century Palazzo Cavalli (inGothic-Venetian style), the 14th centurychurch of San Lorenzo (reconstructed inthe 18th century), and the beautifulPalazzo di Giustizia and PalazzoScaligero. Leaving the town towards theeast, cross the bridge over the TorrenteTramigna and continue along on thepanoramic road towards Colognola aiColli, a quaint village originally inhabitatedby Romans, and extending across thecharming hills of Soave. From here, aturn towards the south takes you to localhot springs dating from the Roman period(Antiche Terme Romane) in Caldiero.Alternatively, head north to reach thedelightful Illasi Valley, where olive treesflourish amongst vineyards and cherrygroves; continue the journey up to Pievedi Colognola where the romantic Pievedi Santa Maria, surrounded by vineyards, can be admired. The very ancient centerof San Pietro di Lavagno, surrounded by

villas, can also be visited. Return to Illasi, with its suggestive, medieval atmosphere.Admire the villas of the former nobility, such as the Vil la Perez PompeiSagramoso (once the seat of feudalgovernment), whose large park extendsup to the castle. Climb to the top of thehill crest and enjoy views of the Illasivalley and Tramigna, then descend toCazzano di Tramigna meandering throughthe cherry orchards. A bit further south, near Monteforte d'Alpone, you will findthe historic zone of "Soave Classico",the selection area for "cru" wines (MontePressoni, Monte Foscarino, Rugate,Ronchetto, Val D'Alpone, Ronc andBolca). Admire the important parishchurch of Santa Maria Maggiore, decorated with a neoclassical facadeand bell tower, and the Palazzo Vescovile, enhanced by a delightful cloister. In all,an intoxicating journey of discovery tothe land of a world-famous wine.

  • The Veronese Plain discovery toursThe province of Verona extendssouthward from the city to the PadanaPlain, a vast panorama of lowlandsdominated by the cultivation of cerealsand rice, and interrupted only by thesolemn flow of the Adige River andtributaries of the Po. The lowlands, orBassa, have a melancholy charm thatrecall man's relationship to the land, thecyclical nature of the seasons, and thevibrant colours of autumn, dimmed onlyby the first fog. Many towns in the area have animpressive history. Romanesquechurches are found in Belfiore, Isola dellaScala, Erbedello, Cerea and Gazzo.Scaliger fortifications, seen in Valeggiosul Mincio, Villafranca, Nogarole Rocca,

Isola della Scala, Salizzole andSanguinetto, formed part of the uniqueand famous defensive system-createdby the Veronese noble family dal Mincioat Paludi del Grezzano-known as theSerraglio. Archeological museums of fivelocal communities display many artifacts, and testify to a human presence in thearea as far back as the Neolithic era.One of the greatest expressions of localpeasant culture can be found near Isoladella Scala, where evidence of the area'sflouishing rice industry (Vialone NanoIGP), including the Pila Vecia, a 17thcentury machine used to husk rice, isample. From the annual Rice Fair heldeach September/October, to artisan-made agricultural crafts used for rice

cult ivat ion and production, theimportance of the local rice crop isabundantly clear. Other agriculturalproducts, including Veronese chicory,Cologna Veneta potatoes, Castagnarocabbage, and the apples of Zevio, areequally important. In addition, localfurniture artisans have found greatsuccess. The area has also been a notedcenter of furniture design and productionsince the 1920s, and thrives today thanksto a vocational school, Scuola diEbanisteria, in Bovolone. All of this andmore can be found within a panoramaof unlimited horizons-the last remainingmarshlands of the Great Veronese Valley, where cane, wild grasses, and rarespecies of flowers and fauna all flourish.

  • Lake Garda sun, nature, and much moreThe Veronese shores of Lake Garda offeran intoxicating landscape, and burst withcolour. Charming small towns, vineyardsand olive trees dot the shoreline. A water-lovers paradise, the deep blue waters ofthe lake and its eastern riviera offer anincredible variety of attractions that canbe visited in a half day tour from Veronaor the Valpolicella, or on a more leisurelyfull day tour.

Start at the southeastern corner of thelake, where the waters of Lake Gardamix with those of the Mincio River, in thetown of Peschiera. Sixteenth centurysammicheliane walls conjure up imagesof the town in its role as a Venetianstronghold, while lakeshore beaches anda nearby amusement park, Gardaland, all beckon within easy reach. LikePeschiera, many other towns on thelake's eastern shore developed aroundhistoric fortifications laid down duringScaliger and Venetian rule. Someexamples are Lasize, marked by acharming historic center; Bardolino, notedfor its wine, the small romanesque churchof San Severo, and the elegant villas ofCanestrari and Bottagisio; and Garda, dominated by the unmistakeable Rocca

The incrediblebeauty of this area, in addition to theviews that can enjoyed from the summitof Mount Luppia, must certainly haveheld great charm for those thatconstructed its nearby namesake churchand villa (indeed, the area has hostedmany famous guests since the 13thcentury). After San Vigilio, the easternshoreline changes dramatically: the lakenarrows, as it is closed off by MountBaldo to the east and the Brescian pre-alps to the west. Another Scaliger castlerises in Torri del Benaco; there, you mayalso admire the beautiful Palazzo delCapitano del Lago, the indoor lemonnurseries (limonaia), the Torre delBerengario, and the small church of SSTrinit. Picturesque moutain roads leadto Albisano and San Zeno di Montagnanearing the summit of Mount Baldo. Thisarea is characterized by stone housesand narrow lanes, notably in Pai,Castelleto and Biazza. Enjoy Cassone, with its tower and hermitage of SSBenigno and Caro, and the Val di Sogno,

a scenographic inlet enclosed aroundthe islet of Trimelone. The next viewopens onto Malcesine, probably one ofthe lake's most evocative villages, thanksto its superb Castello Scaligero, cobblestone streets, and the interestingbotanical species that proliferate in itsunique micro-climate. From the centerof town, a cableway climbs 1752 metresto Tratto Spino, and offers sweepingviews of Lake Garda.
