“Just as we were about to go under the bridge, andy turned to me, got down on one knee, and proposed.”
A romantic evening in Paris ending with a walk along the Seine and a picture-perfect marriage proposal sounds like a fairy tale. For Emily and Andy, however, it was simply part of their love story.
The pair originally met in high school and even went to college together, but remained no more than good friends for years. Nothing romantic developed between them until well after college graduation. Andy moved to Washington, D.C., and Emily to Chicago. They remained in touch, but both were busy building lives in their new cities. Finally, in 2006, Emily ran in the Chicago Marathon, something she had mentioned to Andy several months prior. “After completing the race, I came home to find an absolutely gorgeous bouquet of flowers, which I knew could only be from one person,” she says. It was then she realized that she and Andy had the potential to be more than just good friends. They began speaking frequently and before they knew it, they were a couple. In 2008, Andy moved to Chicago so he could be closer to his love.
In March 2009, Emily and Andy decided to travel to Paris for a vacation, eager to spend some time away and relax. On their first evening there, Andy made reservations at a restaurant he knew Emily would love, and they ventured out for a romantic meal even though both were jet-lagged. They had a wonderful time, though Emily couldn’t help but notice that Andy seemed a little distracted. “He got up three separate times during the meal — I learned later he kept checking to make sure the ring was still perfectly arranged,” she says. After they ate, Andy suggested they take a stroll along the river and over his favorite Parisian bridge. It was a perfect, crisp night and, as Emily chatted away, she again noticed Andy was strangely silent — but she didn’t have to wait long to find out why. “Just as we were about to go under the bridge, Andy turned to me, got down on one knee, and proposed,” she says. Emily was thrilled, and the pair spent the evening toasting with champagne in celebration.
Andy’s father owns a gorgeous home in Barnard, Vermont, that Emily and Andy had visited many times and loved. They knew the town would be the perfect location for their wedding — a place special to them that they could share with family and friends. When it came to deciding on a color palette for the day, Emily wanted to utilize shades of yellow, gray, and green for a light, airy effect at her spring wedding. Her floral design incorporated the colors flawlessly while adding texture with bold succulent accents. The overall atmosphere

of the wedding was one of festive delight, complete with brightly colored macaroons, a picturesque outdoor setting, and unique tags, flags, and napkin rings. The colors and design were perfect for a springtime celebration in Vermont.
The bride and groom also incorporated as many family traditions as possible throughout their celebration. The huppa that the couple married under, which had also been used at Andy’s aunt and uncle’s wedding, was made with tallies his grandfather had worn during his bar mitzvah. The bible verse printed on the front of the couple’s wedding programs, Ruth 1:16, had been read at Emily’s parent’s and grandparent’s weddings and inscribed on her great-grandmother’s wedding ring.
The joyful springtime soirée was everything the couple could have imagined and more. As the celebration came to an end, family and friends greeted them with sparklers, perhaps Emily’s favorite part of the night. “Running under the cascading lights, surrounded by all the people you love most, is truly amazing.” Stopping for a quick kiss among the sparkling lights, the newlyweds knew their own personal fairy tale was just beginning.
