INSTALLATION PROCEDURE


The concrete base slab is constructed – it is flat and simple . . . . .


. . . . . air and gas pipes are cast in . . . . .


. . . the fans are installed and the inner membrane fixed . . .


. . . the outer membrane is then installed, with its supports from the inner membrane . . .


. . . the gas over-pressure relief system is added . . .


. . . and finally the instruments are installed.


Initial concrete base slab, flat and simple.


Fan set and air regulation valve ready for use (note air pipe is cast into slab).


Gas inlet and outlet pipes cast into slab.


Inner membrane, pre-packed in factory, is brought up to the slab.


The membrane locations are marked out onto the slab . . . . .


. . . . . all that is required is two simple circles drawn on the slab.


The inner membrane is rolled onto the slab . . . . .


. . . . . unwrapped . . . . .


. . . . . and unrolled across the slab into approximate position.


The inner membrane is then half unfurled . . . . .


. . . . . and shifted up to the setting-out marks.


The other half is then unfurled . . . . .


. . . . . and the inner membrane is now more or less located.


The inner membrane holding down strip (the “keder”) is then pulled carefully up to its correct position on the setting-out mark.


The reinforcement patch at the gas pipe positions needs to be carefully located above the pipes.


The stainless steel anchorage angles.


A neoprene strip is located on the “keder” . . . . .


. . . . . and one of the stainless steel angles located on it so that the outer edge of the “keder” is exactly coincident with the setting-out mark.


Drilling now commences . . . . .


. . . . . and the stainless steel “through bolt” is hammered home.


This process continues right round the circumference until the inner membrane is entirely anchored. Note that there have been no parts requiring casting-in.


The straps which connect the inner membrane to the outer membrane are shown here being assembled. These straps are needed to support the inner membrane (at its equator) from the outer membrane when inflated.


The inner membrane attachment is welded in place in the factory . . . . .


. . . . . and to this is simply connected another length of webbing strap that constitutes the main connection between inner membrane and outer . . . . .


. . . . . leaving us with a strap ready for later connection to the outer membrane.


We now need to get to the gas pipe connections to make a permanent seal with the inner membrane floor. Access is gained through an access tube welded to the inner membrane wall.


Inside the inner membrane, on the floor, a hole is cut through the membrane at the gas pipe position. This is simply done with a knife.


A stainless steel “backing ring” is then located over the cast-in gas pipe flange (which has threaded holes) . . . . .


. . . . . and holes are cut out of the membrane using a standard hole punch.


Finally the “backing ring” is installed with two gaskets and bolted up with stainless steel bolts, washers and sealant.


The access tube can now be sealed, using hot air.


This work must be done carefully, as the tube must be completely sealed and gas tight.


Finally the sealed tube is rolled up . . . . .


. . . . . and tucked into its own “envelope”, readily accessible if entry is ever required in future . . . . .


. . . . . and the envelope is finally laced up to secure the rolled up tube.


The target board for receiving the ultrasonic level measurement signal from the transducer to be located in the top of the outer membrane is now assembled . . . . .


. . . . . and connected securely to the top of the inner membrane by ropes tied through factory-welded tags.


A ballast ring is now assembled. This weight gives stability to the inner membrane and ensures a regular shape to the membrane during inflation and deflation.


The inner membrane is now complete, and work on the outer membrane can begin.


The outer membrane is rolled up to the slab . . . . .


. . . . . and over the completed inner membrane.


It is unfurled . . . . .


. . . . . unrolled . . . . .


. . . . . and spread out to its approximate position on the slab.


The outer membrane spread out.


Holes are punched in the outer membrane for the various fittings . . . . .


. . . . . which are then simply attached with stainless steel bolts.


The anchorages can now be fixed, in exactly the same manner as carried out on the inner membrane.


The anchoring down carries on round the periphery of the outer membrane, working to the marking out lines drawn earlier.

The outer membrane is now complete . . . . .


. . . . . and inflation can start, using the installed fans.


Inflation proceeds . . . . .


. . . . . and we can now enter the outer membrane, through the hatch, to see the membrane lifting away from the inner membrane, which is not yet attached to the outer.


The circumferential cable is threaded through the outer membrane eyelets, and the previously laced up connecting straps attached . . . . .


. . . . .and the gas leak detection pipe fitted.


The outer membrane can now be finally inflated to its working pressure, and the final adjustments made to the interconnecting straps.


The work inside the gasholder is now compete. Au revoir!


The gas leak detection pipe is now pulled through its outer membrane flange.


The gasholder is nearly complete.

Installation time varies from 1 day for a small gasholder to about 5 days for the very largest.
