THIS IS AN EXTRACT FROM CHARLES DICKENS’ ‘GREAT EXPECTATIONS’. PIP, A YOUNG BOY, IS STARTLED TO SEE AN ESCAPED CONVICT IN A CHURCHYARD. READ IT AND THEN LOOK AT THE QUESTIONS BELOW.

A fearful man, all in coarse grey, with a great iron on his leg. A man with no hat, and with broken shoes, and with an old rag tied round his head. A man who had been soaked in water, and smothered in mud, and lamed by stones, and cut by flints, and stung by nettles, and torn by briars; who limped, and shivered, and glared and growled; and whose teeth chattered in his head as he seized me by the chin.

`O! Don't cut my throat, sir,' I pleaded in terror. `Pray don't do it, sir.'

1. Where is the pace slow, and where is it fast? What is it about the sentences that creates that effect?

2. Underline any violent verbs in the passage. What effect do they create?

3. Why do you think Dickens creates this pace at this moment?

You are going to write from the point of view of someone else using the first-person narrative voice. You should try and use accurate and interesting verbs, and some of the different kinds of verb forms you have looked at. You’ll write 3 short paragraphs as a character in one of these images. Paragraphs will be…
