Fabric-1/2 metre faux fur 140cm wide. 1/2 metre fabric for inside and ties. Something with a good weight works best. If using a thin fabric stiffen it with a medium weight iron-on interfacing. Allow 3/4 metre if fur or fabric is less wide.

This pattern fits shoulders with an around-shoulder measurement of 104cm. It is easily made bigger or smaller by adding to or subtracting from the pattern at the centre back seam.

Step 1: adjust pattern size if needed

Measure snugly around your shoulders, roughly where a stole would sit. The paper pattern should take this measurement from one edge at the centre front middle notch to the same point on the other front. It may be easiest to print two copies of the pattern-one for the fabric and one for the fur. You will see that the cutting line for each is marked as different lines on the pdf.

Step 2: Cut main pattern and tie pieces from fabric

Fold your fabric, wrong sides together, forming a double layer just wide enough to fit your pattern on when folded in half. Place the smaller fabric pattern on the fabric so that the centre back line is against the fold. Pin the pattern in place. Mark the pleat notches. Also cut out two tie pieces.

Step 3: Cut main stole piece and pom-poms from fake fur

The fur is cut along the outer cutting line marked on the 1/2 pattern. Lay the fur wrong side up on the table, and place the 1/2 pattern onto it. Using chalk mark where the centre back line is and draw all around the pattern line with chalk. Mark the pleat notches are too. Flip the pattern over and draw the other side. Using small sharp scissors cut the fur pieces out cutting through the backing fabric only. If you use big scissors and cut the fur as well it makes a real mess. Cut 2 pom-poms out of the fur as well.

Step 4: Ties and pompoms

With wrong sides together sew the long edges of each tie to form a tube, turn right sides out and press so the seam is on the edge. Bunch up one end of a tie and sew it onto the backing fabric of a pompom. Repeat with the other. Run a gathering stitch around the outer edge of each pompom. Use strong thread. Pull the gathers up forming the pompom around the tie. You can stuff a little bit of scrap fabric into the pompom as you pull it up if

you think it needs it. After pulling up the gathering catch the tie with your needle and thread to the pompom edge and sew back and forth through it and the pompom edges a few times to pull it in a tightly as you can. Just make sure that the tie hasn't been pulled up too short or it will distort the bottom shape of the pompom.

Step 5: Fabric sewing

Pin the centre front pleats to form an outward facing big box pleat. Baste in place. Hand sew the pleat fold on the inside with a criss-cross stitch. This make it sit better when the stole is worn. On the right side of the fabric pin the tie ends over the box pleats. make a small tuck in the tie end it so it is the same width as the box pleat . Baste ties in place.

Step 6: Fur and fabric sewing

-On your main fur stole piece use small scissors to trim the fur close to the backing along the1cm seam allowance. Do this all the way around, teasing the cut fur away with your fingers. This helps reduce bulk especially on the front edges. Make the centre front box pleats in the fur as you did in the fabric piece. Also hand catching the fur pleat folds together on the wrong side like you did the fabric ones. -Wrong sides together pin the fabric to the fur. When sewing it will be easier to have the fur on top and the fabric underneath because you need to ease the fur edges in slightly with your fingers as you sew because the fur piece is that bit bigger than the fabric. The front pleats are very thick to sew over especially with the tie ends sandwiched in there as well. Hand basting them together first will help. -Sew with your machine set to a large stitch. As you do the machine sewing at the front sew slowly, hand turning the wheel when you get to the thickness at the box pleats. Sew over this area twice for strength so the ties are extra secure. -Sew all the way around the stole except leave at least 20cm gap in the centre of the lower edge to turn the stole right side out. -After the edges have been sewn carefully turn the stole right side out and coax the front corners out with your fingers. -Hand stitch the opening closed. Using a pin, carefully tease out any fur that may have been caught in the edge seams all round the stole. All done!
