VCCDC hosted its 2nd annual Home ownership fair

Ventura County Community De-velopment Corporation (VCCDC) hosted its 2nd Annual Homeown-ership Fair on Saturday, June 28th, 2014. The event celebrated Na-tional Homeownership Month and highlighted VCCDC’s continued efforts to promote the benefi ts that homeownership has on families and on the community as a whole. The Homeownership Fair, co-sponsored by the City of Oxnard Affordable Housing and Rehabilitation Divi-sion, also included a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of VCCDC’s new Home Ownership Center located at 2231 Sturgis Road, Suite A in Oxnard.

VCCDC dedicated the Home Ownership Center in memory of its founder, Rodney E. Fernandez. Rodney founded Ventura County

Community Development Corpo-ration in 2001 as an independent 501(c) 3 to fulfi ll his broad vision of strengthening and sustaining prosperous communities through homebuyer education, pre-purchase counseling, financial coaching, financing mortgage loans, and post-homeownership counseling services.

“Rodney was our founder, friend, teacher, and mentor. He proved that one person can make a lasting dif-ference in the world. He inspired us by sharing his vision. He motivated us through leadership by example. He empowered us by focusing our energy on meaningful work,” said Shane Saunders, VCCDC Board President.

Melinda Fernandez, Rodney’s widow, was present to unveil the

dedication plaque in the Home Ownership Center during the dedi-cation ceremony.

“A big heartfelt thank you to the board of directors for honoring my husband,” said Melinda. “Someday, you too will be celebrating one of your departments that has blos-somed into another ‘little non-profi t down by the river’".

Approximately 400 community members attended the event and enjoyed free lunch catered by local restaurant, BG’s Cafe, live music from Trio Los Principes, kid’s activities, and raffles with more than 40 prizes. The public also had the opportunity to tour VCCDC’s Home Ownership Center and attend a workshop to learn about the ser-vices VCCDC offers including free education services, like workshops

and counseling as well as mortgage lending and realty services, includ-ing down payment assistance.

“VCCDC is made up of people with a deep, personal desire to make the world a better place to live,” said Bertha Garcia, VCCDC Executive Director. “We surround ourselves with people willing and ready to take on this challenge, and that’s a major reason we have been successful.”

Pablo Ortiz emceed the opening ceremony which featured the fol-lowing speakers: City of Oxnard Mayor Pro Tem, Carmen Ramírez, Esq.; David Tovar from the offi ce of

California State Assembly Member Das Williams, Stan Hakes from the offi ce of Ventura County Super-visor John Zaragoza, and Nancy Lindholm, CEO of the Oxnard Chamber of Commerce.

included 15+ resource booths which provided prospective homebuyers with valuable information about the benefi ts of homeownership and also gave them the opportunity to get answers to their questions directly from local lenders, realtors, home-ownership counselors and other industry experts in the community.

Alert of multiple vehicle burglaries

In an effort to keep residents informed, engaged, and empow-ered to address crime trends, the Oxnard Police Department has identifi ed a pattern in the area of the City Buffet, 1600 Ives Ave-nue, in the City of Oxnard.

The target vehicles belong to patrons that are left unlocked or with valuables left unattended in vehicles. The Oxnard Police Department would like to remind and encourage community mem-bers to secure their vehicles and not leave valuables in plain sight. Community members are encour-aged to call the Oxnard Police Department with information on any suspicious persons or activity.

Below we offer some tips to help prevent burglaries to your vehicle:

• An unlocked car is an invita-tion to a thief - lock your vehicle before leaving it and take the keys.

• Close all of the windows - thieves can open vehicles through the smallest of openings.

• Lock your vehicle even if you only make a brief stop at a gas station, store or mall.

• At night, park in well-lit and

active areas.• Keep your registration in your

wallet or purse, not in the car. • Do not leave your garage door

opener in your vehicle. It can be stolen and used to return and enter your house (with an address they can obtain from any mailings in your vehicle).

Commercial robberies...to witnesses, a suspect entered the business and demanded cash from an employee standing at the register. Fearing the suspect had a weapon, the employee gave the suspect money out of the register.

The second robbery occurred on Tuesday. Offi cers responded to Food 4 Less, located at 150 West Esplanade Drive. An employ-ee told offi cers that the suspect demanded money from the cash register. The employee feared he would be harmed, so the employ-

ee handed the money over to the suspect and the suspect fl ed the business.

The third robbery occurred on Wednesday at the Home Depot, located at 401 West Esplanade Drive. The suspect walked up to a cashier as if he was going to pur-chase an item. When the cashier opened the register, the suspect took the money from the register and fl ed.

The fourth robbery occurred at the Vallarta Supermarket located at 2690 Vineyard Avenue. The

suspect entered the business and confronted a cashier. The suspect demanded the cashier give him the money from the register. The sus-pect fl ed the business after taking the cash.

The Oxnard police department made an arrest in an attempted rob-bery that occurred in the cafeteria portion of Saint John’s Hospital, located at 1600 North Rose Ave-nue. The attempted robbery took place onWednesday.

According to witness state-ments, the suspect entered the

cafeteria and confronted a cashier demanding money from the regis-ter. The cashier called for security and the suspect fl ed. A security guard followed the suspect out of the hospital and notifi ed the police.

Oxnard police offi cers respond-ed to the area of North Rose Avenue and Gonzales Road look-ing for the suspect. Offi cers and detectives observed a person run-ning from the immediate vicinity of the hospital, which matched the description of the attempted robbery suspect. The person was detained and identifi ed as Salvador Raymond Medrano, a 39 year old Oxnard resident. Medrano was

positively identifi ed as the suspect who tried to rob the cashier in the cafeteria. Oxnard police detectives believe Medrano is responsible for the recent string of commercial robberies that occurred at Subway, Food 4 Less, Vallarta Supermarket and Home Depot.

No one was injured during the commission of these crimes.

Salvador Medrano has been officially charged with four counts of robbery (Subway, Food 4 Less, Home Depot and Vallarta Supermarket). Medrano was already in custody for attempted robbery.

un Subway, ubicado en el 1941 North Rose Avenue en Oxnard. Según los testigos, el sospecho-so entró al negocio y exigió din-ero de la caja registradora a un empleado. Ante el temor de que el sospechoso estuviera armado, el empleado le dio el dinero.

El segundo robo ocurrió el mismo día. Los agentes re-spondieron a la tienda Food 4 Less, ubicada en el 150 West Esplanade Drive. Un emplea-do le dijo a los agentes que el sospechoso exigió el dinero de la caja registradora. El emplea-do temía que iba a ser lastimado, por lo que le entregó el dinero al sospechoso y este huyó de la tienda.

El tercer robo se produjo el miércoles en el Home Depot, ubicado en 401 West Esplanade Drive. El sospechoso se acercó a un cajero, como si fuera a comprar un algo. Cuando el cajero abrió la caja registradora, el sospechoso tomó el dinero y huyó.

El cuarto robo se produjo en la tienda Vallarta Supermarket ubicados en 2690 Vineyard Av-

enue. El sospechoso entró en el negocio y confrontó a un cajero. El sospechoso exigió al cajero que le diera el dinero de la caja registradora. El sospechoso huyó de la tienda después de tomar el dinero.

El departamento de policía de Oxnard hizo un arresto en un intento de robo que se produjo en la cafetería del Hospital San Juan, ubicado en el 1600 de North Rose Avenue.

De acuerdo con declaraciones de los testigos, el sospechoso entró en la cafetería y se en-frentó a una cajera exigiendo el dinero de la caja registradora. La cajera llamó a la seguridad y el sospechoso huyó. Un guardia de seguridad siguió al sospecho-so hasta fuera del hospital y notifico a la policía.

Agentes de la policía respond-ieron a la zona de North Rose Avenue y la calle Gonzales en busca del sospechoso. Los ofi-ciales y detectives observaron a una persona que iba corriendo del hospital, la descripción coincidía con la del sospecho-so. La persona fue detenida e identificada como Salvador

Raymond Medrano, un residen-te de la ciudad de Oxnard de 39 años de edad. Medrano fue identificado como el sospecho-so que intentó robar a la cajera en la cafetería del hospital. Los detectives creen que Medrano puede ser el posible responsable de la reciente serie de robos comerciales que tuvieron lugar en el Subway, Food 4 Less, Vallarta Supermarket y Home Depot.

Afortunadamente nadie re-sultó herido durante los robos.

Salvador Medrano ha sido acusado oficialmente de cuatro cargos de robo a los negocios Subway, Food 4 Less, Home Depot y Vallarta Supermarket. Medrano ya estaba en custodia por intento de robo.

Destacan la importancia de crear un historial de crédito

Un experto financiero señaló que hay millones de hispanos que "trabajan duro" y, sin embargo, carecen de historial de crédito para obtener un préstamo, por lo que instó a las instituciones ban-carias a "darles una oportunidad" y "probar su capacidad de pago".

La importancia de establecer un buen historial de crédito en EE.UU. es una vía clave para el aumento de las oportunidades de educación, empleo y vivienda de la comunidad latina, que encuen-tra a menudo serias difi cultades para obtener préstamos, aseguró.

En ese sentido, un escaso histo-rial de crédito o ninguno "relegan a los hispanos a las sombras de la economía", donde las opciones son "limitadas y los costos altos", destacó Raúl Vázquez, gerente general de la empresa de servicios Progreso Financiero.

Lamentó Vázquez que, según estudios, el 54.4% de los hispanos se hayan visto obligados a uti-lizar los denominados servicios alternativos (AFS), los cuales, generalmente, "tienen más altos cargos y tasas de interés que los convencionales".

Insistió el experto en que el acceso a los servicios fi nancieros y al "crédito asequible" está conectado de forma directa con las

posibilidades de empleo, uno de los "temas más importantes para los hispanos", junto con el de la educación.

Alertó sobre la importancia de evitar préstamos injustos o con altas tarifas o intereses y, para ello, exhortó a los latinos a "bus-car alternativas de préstamo que estén estructurados" en torno a sus posibilidades de pago y con términos asequibles.

Los solicitantes de préstamos deben también asegurarse de que el préstamo sea reportado a las agencias de crédito para, así, poder establecer un historial de crédito con el que "acceder a más servicios fi nanciaros, como préstamo para adquirir una vivi-enda", puso de relieve.

Más de 23 millones de hispanos

no cuentan con un historial de crédito sufi ciente para, por ejem-plo, "comprar una casa, comenzar un negocio, hacer arreglos en el hogar o fi nanciar la educación de sus hijos", reiteró el directivo de esta entidad fi nanciera centrada en la concesión de préstamos ase-quibles a la comunidad hispana.

Proteja su piel del cáncer

Los largos días de piscina y mar durante el verano pueden dejar marcados algo más que "buenos recuerdos" si no se to-man las precauciones necesar-ias para proteger la piel, según advirtieron expertos sanitarios.

Con 3.5 millones de casos, según cifras de la Academia Americana del Cáncer, el cánc-er de piel es el tipo cáncer más común en Estados Unidos.

Eric Meinhardt, dermatólogo en el Centro Médico Kaiser Permanente en Los Ángeles (California), considera que la detección temprana puede hac-er una gran diferencia y por ello recomienda acudir al médico cuando se note algo irregular.

"La mayoría de los cánceres de piel se pueden encontrar temprano mediante exámenes de la piel y es importante que todos nos realicemos un exam-en de la piel por un médico al igual que nos autoexaminemos la piel frecuentemente, en es-pecial las personas que tienen un riesgo más alto de cáncer de piel", declaró el especialista.

A pesar de que el cáncer de piel puede detectarse por igual entre todas las personas, aquellas que tienen un tono más oscuro de pie se les suele detectar generalmente en una etapa más tardía, lo cual afecta en especial a las minorías.

De acuerdo con datos del Instituto Nacional del Cáncer, cuando los hispanos y otros grupos minoritarios son diag-nosticados con melanoma, el tipo más grave de cáncer de piel, es por lo general en una etapa más tardía y cuando la enfermedad es más difícil de tratar.

El número de casos de mela-noma en la comunidad hispana ha ido en aumento durante las décadas, que entre 1992 y 2008 registró un 19 por ciento más en

este grupo, de acuerdo con cifras del Programa de Vigilancia, Epi-demiología y Resultados Finales (SEER) del Instituto Nacional del Cáncer.

Asimismo, un estudio del Insti-tuto del Cáncer de Nueva Jersey publicado en 2013, encontró que los hispanos no se protegen la piel en forma habitual contra el sol.

Elegir un protector solar de amplio espectro que bloquee tanto los rayos UVA como UVB y aplicárselo cada dos horas, sin importar el número de SPF que tenga, es indispensable para obtener una mayor protección, en especial entre los menores, apuntó el experto.

"La mayoría de las personas acumulan hasta un 80 por ciento de su exposición solar total antes de cumplir los 18 años de edad. Es bien importante que los padres les enseñen a sus hijos a disfrutar del sol de forma segura, adoptan-do las precauciones adecuadas para reducir el riesgo de que su hijo desarrolle cáncer de piel en el futuro", señaló.

Meinhardt destacó también la importancia de estar alerta ante posibles señales para detectar lo más temprano posible la enfer-medad.

"Es importante que todos nos familiaricemos con nues-tra piel, observando nuestros lunares, pecas, y manchas de nacimiento. Cualquier cambio que notemos a estos, hay que consultar con nuestro médico de cabecera de inmediato", aconsejó Meinhardt.

Reiteró que es importante acudir al médico cuando se detecta un cambio en la piel, como un nuevo lunar o abulta-miento, así como una llaga que no sana o un cambio en un lunar o marca existente.

E l exper to recomienda además evitar la exposición al sol durante las horas de mayor intensidad, entre las 10 de la mañana y las 4 de la tarde, y en caso de que se deba estar al aire libre en esas horas utilizar ropa que cubra los brazos, las piernas y un sombrero para proteger la cara, el cuello y las orejas.

"Es importante tomar todas estas medidas y no confiar únicamente en el protector solar. Aun cuando el día está nublado, hay que protegerse ya que las nubes y la niebla pueden intensifi car los rayos del sol", aseveró el dermatólogo.

La mayoría de los cánceres de la piel se pueden detectar temprano mediante auto exámenes. El historial de crédito es muy importante en este país para ob-

Rescatan a dos niñas y descubren cuerpo de un menor asesinado

La policía del estado mexicano de Guanajuato rescató a dos niñas de cinco y seis años golpeadas y colgadas en un local y descubrió el cuerpo de un menor asesinado por sus padres y enterrado clandestina-mente, dijeron fuentes ofi ciales.

Las autoridades fronterizas están registrando en las últimas dos semanas una importante disminución en el cruce de meno-res centroamericanos sin acom-pañantes a través de la frontera sur, lo que mitiga la crisis human-itaria causada por la avalancha de niños que llegaron al país en los últimos meses.

Un funcionario de la Patrulla Fronteriza en McAllen señaló a medios locales que en los úl-timos días se ha observado una disminución en el número de menores solos detenidos cuan-do intentaban cruzar la frontera por esta zona y, según explicó, en un día se detuvo apenas a 80 menores, cuando el pasado mes el promedio diario era de 300.

Funcionarios consulares en Tex-as de Honduras, Guatemala y El Salvador, los países de donde son originarios los menores, señalaron que la disminución de las deten-ciones es considerable si se toma en cuenta las cifras de los meses anteriores.

"Hemos visto una reducción en un 70 por ciento en las detenciones de menores de Guatemala", dijo Allan Pérez, cónsul de Guatemala en McAllen, y quien precisó que la disminución se empezó a notar desde la pasada semana.

El funcionario opinó que el descenso de la actividad en la frontera se puede originar a las campañas informativas que se

están desarrollando en los países centroamericanos, en donde se están emitiendo anuncios en tele-visión que alertan sobre los ries-gos que conlleva la inmigración ilegal.

Pérez aludió como otro de los

factores disuasorios la muerte del primer menor guatemalte-co en Texas, quien falleció de deshidratación y fue repatriado la semana pasada a su país.

La frontera sur de Texas ha sido la vía por la que entre octubre del año pasado y el mes de junio más

de 57,000 menores sin acom-pañantes han sido detenidos por la Patrulla Fronteriza al intentar cruzar la frontera de manera ilegal, una cifra que duplica a los meno-res capturados el año anterior.

Con la apertura de un nuevo centro de procesamiento en McAl-

len, Texas, con capacidad para 1,000 niños, se han paralizado los traslados de menores al centro de procesamiento en Nogales, en Arizona, que se abrió el 30 de mayo para albergar a parte de los niños detenidos en Texas, ante la

imposibilidad de los funcionarios de este estado de procesar a todos los menores indocumentados.

La nueva instalación en McAl-len cuenta con mallas divisorias que permiten la organización de cuatro espacios para albergar a 250 menores en cada uno de ellos,

y en los que podrán dormir, recibir asistencia médica y ver televisión.

Los cónsules centroamericanos en Arizona señalaron por su parte que desde hace una semana no se reciben menores en el centro de procesamiento de Nogales, en donde hay menos de 200 niños, según los funcionarios consulares.

"Ya no hemos recibido más niños en Nogales, el número ahora es mucho más bajo que las primeras semanas de junio", dijo Luzmila Aguirre, cónsul de El Salvador en Tucson.

Aunque los funcionarios de la Patrulla Fronteriza (CBP) no confi rmaron el cierre del centro de procesamiento de Nogales, tras-cendió que el personal que presta servicios en este emplazamiento se ha reducido. Se espera que este almacén funcione hasta el próximo año.

Según el protocolo dado a conocer por las autoridades, tras ser detenidos por las autoridades fronterizas los menores indoc-umentados pasan al cuidado de la Administración de Servicios Humanos y Salud (HHS), quienes son los encargados de enviarlos a albergues para continuar el proce-so de reunifi cación familiar.

Kenneth Wolfe, vocero de la agencia, dijo que el 96% de los menores que ingresaron este año ya han sido reunifi cados con sus familias.

La masiva llegada de menores sin acompañantes ha propiciado que el presidente Barack Obama solicite al Congreso una partida de fondos especiales de 3,700 millones de dólares para abordar esta crisis humanitaria, sin que hasta el momento la Cámara Baja haya resuelto la aprobación de esta solicitud.

saron un inmueble de dos plantas y detuvieron a Jesús Nava Medina, de 35 años, quien confesó que las dos menores se encontraban en su negocio de lavado de autos junto con su madre.

En ese local y después de una in-spección del inmueble los agentes localizaron en un cuarto oscuro y húmedo a las dos menores amar-radas y con marcas de violencia en manos y cuerpo, con síntomas de deshidratación y desnutrición, im-agen que coincidía con la denuncia fotográfi ca.

Las pequeñas denunciaron a los dos adultos de ser los responsables de su situación y una de ellas in-formó que tenían un hermano al que hace tiempo no veían y temían que lo hubieran matado.

Tras un interrogatorio, la mujer confesó que su pareja Jesús Nava Medina asesinó a su hijo en agosto de 2013, quien contaba con siete años, y lo sepultó en un barril industrial de plástico en el patio trasero de su domicilio.

$500 dólares de multa...

El estudio dado a conocer por la Universidad de California Davis, señaló que el consumo de agua en California aumentó un 1% a pesar de que el gobernador invitó a un ahorro del 20%. El reporte revisó datos presentados un mes atrás, que mostraban que el consumo de agua había disminuido 5%.

Según destacó Felicia Marcus, presidente de la junta, al comen-tar los resultados del informe,

los datos muestran que muchos californianos "no son conscientes de la gravedad de la sequía" en el Estado Dorado.

El análisis mostró que el incre-mento se atribuye especialmente a las comunidades costeras del sur de California y a una porción en la parte noreste del estado, aunque no determinó las causas del incremento.

Según el análisis, que compara los datos de consumo de mayo

de este año en relación con el año anterior, las ciudades utilizan cerca del 20% de toda el agua del estado mientras la agricultura es responsable por el consumo del 75% del total.

Según el informe del Monitor de Sequía de los EE.UU., dado a conocer el 10 de julio, el 36.46% del Estado Dorado se encuentra en una situación de sequía "excep-cional", presentando un aumento del 13% en los últimos tres meses.

Ayuda para victimas de violencia domestica

El pasado miércoles 16 de este mes de julio, se llevó a cabo un foro de información acerca del cada vez más común problema de violencia doméstica, auspiciado por el Consulado de México, con sede en la ciudad de Oxnard, y la organización sin fines de lucro denominada Mil Mujeres.

Dicho foro informativo se llevó a cabo en las instalaciones de la iglesia “El Alfarero”, ubicada en el 375 S. K. St. en la ciudad de Oxnard.

Alrededor de las 6 de la tarde, dio inicio el foro de información, que contó con la participación de la Sra. Laura E. Quintanilla, cónsul de protección, la Lic. Ana Berenice Díaz, Cónsul titular y Giselle Lembo, representante de la organización Mil Mujeres.

La Cónsul Quintanilla fue la primera en hacer uso de la pal-abra, para informar el motivo de la reunión, que fue, además de informar a los asistentes acerca de la problemática de la violencia doméstica, la firma de un convenio de colaboración entre el Consula-do de México, con sede en Oxnard y que atiende la región compren-dida por los condados de Ventura, Santa Bárbara y San Luis Obispo y la organización no lucrativa Mil Mujeres, también habló de la experiencia personal con esta problemática, dijo que la violencia doméstica es un fenómeno que va en aumento, quizás en parte, porque cada día hay más mujeres que se atreven a denunciar el mal-trato. Agregó que las mujeres de origen latino enfrentan una doble problemática, por una parte, tener que soportar el maltrato, insultos, golpes, abuso sexual en ocasiones y después también el problema del idioma, porque se sienten insegu-ras de acudir a las autoridades por que solamente hablan español en mucho de los casos, por eso, es necesario que sepan que existe esta ayuda, de forma casi gratuita. También se menciono el hecho de que hoy en día muchos hombres también son victima de violencia domestica por parte de sus esposas o parejas. En el caso del hombre cuando es victima, él esta menos propenso a reportar el abuso por que es difícil que se lo crea la policía y por vergüenza y conver-tirse en la burla de sus amistades.

La Cónsul Berenice Díaz, dijo sentirse muy complacida con la firma de este convenio, porque durante su estancia como repre-sentante de México en la OEA, le tocó ser parte de la negociación en leyes internacionales contra el maltrato y la violencia domésti-ca. Dijo también que el gobierno de México tiene una especial atención hacia esta problemática y de hecho, cada año en el pre-supuesto de gastos del gobierno

federal mexicano, se designa una partida para apoyar a mexicanas que sufran de violencia doméstica.

En su intervención Giselle Lembo, representante de la orga-nización no lucrativa Mil Mujeres, explicó que dicha organización,

con sede en Washington D. C. se dedica a ayudar a mujeres vícti-mas de violencia doméstica, para que puedan obtener su estancia legal en este país, ya sea mediante una Visa U, o bien una petición VAWA, una u otra dependerán

del status legal del agresor, pero en ambos casos, el resultado es similar, que la víctima, así como los hijos de la misma, puedan regularizar su estancia legal en el país, obtener un permiso de traba-jo y después una residencia legal.

En ocasiones, las mujeres tienen mucho miedo de dejar a su pare-ja, porque dependen económi-camente de ellos, porque son amenazadas con ser denunciadas a inmigración, porque no saben donde obtener ayuda, y hasta por cuestiones culturales, sin embar-go, deben saber que hay agencias

de servicio comunitario que no sólo ayudan en el aspecto legal, sino que también ayudan a propor-cionar un lugar donde permanecer temporalmente, ayuda alimenti-cia, médica y después el proceso para obtener la regularización migratoria. Este proceso, puede llegar a ser hasta gratuito, si la mujer involucrada no tiene recur-sos para pagar, ya que si bien, Mil Mujeres no pudiera costear todos los gastos, existen más agencias que pueden ayudar a costearlos, entre ellos, el propio Consulado de México, si la víctima es de origen

mexicano, concluyó.Después de las intervenciones,

tanto la Cónsul Ana Berenice Díaz, como Giselle Lembo fir-maron los documentos del memo-rándum de cooperación, para empezar sus labores.
