The Fezz Report:

Hi all sorry for the late report and newsletters but we have everything back on track thanks to Dave Catt and Pick.Well we lost the first round due to our insurance hold up but what a way to kick the season off with the two day?I wish to thank all involved with the setting and running of the two day without the key group of people this event would not be what it is today with the reports still coming back from mainland visitors that they are coming back next year with more friends as well, We are just going to have to practice harder so we can retain some of those stunning trophy’s.Whist I am on the two day I would like to thank Tony Demeijer for everything that he did, without his outstanding effort we would not have had half the jobs completed. Fiona Munday for the excellent first aid treatment that was required at such short notice. Dave Catt and the Hell Team have donated some items for us to raffle for the club that we will do at Sunnyside. Thanks to David and Paul.Well round one of the club series was a good first trial with every one having their own areas to work on improving, well done to Mike Amy and his band of helpers.Congratulations to all who competed at the Argyle Easter Trial with 11 Tassie riders bringing home 5 trophies. Please keep an eye on the Trials Aust web site for updates on the WORLD ROUND next year, the word from Col Scott is not to rush in and book accommodation just yet as the date in not set in concrete until November

The Prez, Fezz

Oatlands Trial Excellent weather conditions and an interesting course setting greeted the trail community at Oatlands with mixed results. Thanks to the landowner and section setters for their efforts to put the event together. With some steep hill climbs, big rocks and some tight hillside turns created interesting times for competitors.

Expert, saw the usual sole entry of Chris Bayles hopping and bouncing around the six testing sections built just for him, with a finishing score of only 37 Chris is certainly in top form and we look forward to seeing him take on some mainland lines this Easter.

A-Grade, was contested by four riders, for this was the first round of the year and saw the welcome return of James Blackwell on the snorting Repsol Montesa. James won the class easily and it can’t be long before he takes his smooth and precise style up to the expert class to join Chris. Kurt Pickering put in a strong ride to claim his first podium in the grade. Peter Lockhart and Chris Gillespie also put in strong performances and it’s certainly a pleasure to watch all the riders at the top end of the club, there is no shortage of talent at this end folks.

B-Grade, was won convincingly this time around by Peter Bayles with a score less than half of his nearest rival. Scotty Wellman fought bravely to a fine and deserved 2nd place with Mike Amy and Dylan Bayles following very closely behind. This class always mixes the results with each event suiting a different skill set!!

C+, was only one short of C-Grade numbers with 11 entries. Podium finishers Mike Wellman, Neil Berne Snr and Dean Medwin were within 2 points of each other. A count back was required to separate Neil and Dean for 2nd and 3rd place. Nigel Munday finished just out of the top three with a couple of “silly mistakes” (his words) costing him just a few too many points. Garry Wellman took a step back into C+ and put in a great ride with a badly injured knee. Nathan Purton was another new face and accounted for himself very well on his first outing. Also new to the grade was Alison Parker, after completing the two day event in C-Grade Alison thought it was time to challenge herself further by moving up a grade, finishing in front of at least a couple of class regulars, well done Alison, does this mean you’re moving to B next event?

C-Grade was as usual the largest field with 12 entries and an old face back at the top. Michael Bayles has reserected his regular smooth style and showed a clean pair of heals to his chasers. Ian Gabbedy claimed 2nd place with a fine ride only 5 points behind Michael. In 3rd place and a fantastic effort at that was Miss Chloe Medwin, finishing in front of many regular c grade competitors Chloe’s ride was smooth and controlled all day and her placing was certainly well deserved. A strong battle raged in the midfield with only 15 points separating 6 riders, new faces to the midfield included Andrew Rouse and David Catt, looks like this year is going to be a close one in this Grade.

Finally Clubman, saw another brand new member taking home “The Gold” with Bryce Caletti storming home on his recently purchased 4stroke Sherco, finishing just ahead of Stacy Langworthy who is rapidly coming to grips with her brand new Gasser. Mick Francis is improving every ride and the points are coming down accordingly and finally young Chloe Bayles had her first day of comp on the (new to her) 125 Gasser and will soon be a threat to the class, go girls !!

(Thanks to Mick Luscombe for the content)

Tasmanian 2 Day Titles 2011:

The annual 2 day trial was held over the March long weekend. The field exceeded 85 competitors competing over 14 sections for the 2 days. The exciting fact was the mainland contingent of around half the field. The most important part of

the event were the organizing committee, sponsors and volunteers that assisted over the weekend, without all involved the event would not be the success that it is for our State. From all of the club, I would like to thank all the volunteers, sponsors, mainland competitors and organizers for an excellent weekend. We look forward to next years event!

Some moments from the 2 Day.

Easter Getaway:

11 members set off to Victoria for Easter to take on the rest of Australia at the Argyle Easter Mototrial. The plebs caught the boat Thursday night with all the necessary equipment: bikes, booze and good company with no real plan. The factory assets flew in on Friday morning expecting to be chauffeured to the trail. After a leisurely drive to the Argyle area the team set about the pre event paperwork and went out for a ride and a look around the Saturday sections.

Saturday was an easy warm up to what was to come on Sunday. Most of the team had a good day with very little to report except Peter decided a quick look at the front calipers via the handle bars was need, no harm was done except the 5. Neil decided the best way to quiet down the Tassie Grey Beards team was to only loose 2 points for the day. Kurt put in some excellent sections on the Ossa to be in podium contention for the weekend, he may have wondered when he would get to ride it as it kept disappearing and reappearing with various riders. Most had a smile when returning!!

Prez Fezz went to assist Chris, but due to nothing that would kill Chris he decided to compete, but unrestricted by the minding role, he looked like he was having an awesome time!

Brooke and myself represented C Grade, sorry on trophies but we both had fun with only a point separating us at days end and being in 5th and 6th position.

Sunday greeted us with slightly harder sections to start sorting everyone out. Most of the day was similar to Saturday until the final lap of the day when trophies and pride were up for grabs. The biggest contest was in Grey Beards, Neil had a disastrous day over doubling the day one score and finishing on 5 for the weekend and 1st place. For a second Nigel had a sniff but finished 3rd outright, an excellent performance. Both Ian and Mick were within a point of each other but Ian came out on top finishing on 25 and 5th position whilst Mick picked up 8th with a score of 29.In B grade Kurt and Dylan represented us, their performance secured 2nd outright on 43 for Kurt and Dylan 4th outright on 77.

Dylan’s step up this year has seen his performances get better all the time and Kurt’s new bike seems to suit him perfectly.Peter played the game in masters and finished 3rd on 70 points. Watch out Dylan was only 7 behind on the same line, it won’t be long Pete

The C Grade team did our best over the weekend over 2 days and 80 sections finished equal 7 th on 86 points. I made mention of the Pete caliper inspection……….I decided there was not enough action over the weekend. So if you put these words into a sentence and fill in the blanks as you see fit…. You will get the idea : Raga, crash, bruising, large, Catty, ambition, ability. I am not quite sure of the details as it all happened so quickly - check with Pick and Brooke for the detailed version

The star of the weekend was Chris, winning expert and the event outright on 79 points. It was not all trouble free with the odd 5 here and there and the occasional off.

Monday was load up time and back to the boat. The full results are on Trials Australia if you are interested.

The Ossa File: By Team PickeringKurt Pickering took delivery of a new Ossa after the Tas 2 Day trial. Don Murray made us a good deal and poor Nigel had to give up the new Ossa he had been waiting 30 years for. We felt like we were adopting one of his children.

Ha ha, no not really – well only for a second or two – Nigel will be getting another new one in the next shipment.

After a short amount of practice at Mick Luscombes place, Kurt decided to have a go at A Grade this year. Kurt managed 3rd in his first A Grade event. While there were a couple of obstacles he had trouble with, Kurt felt fairly comfortable on most of the obstacles. The main thing from the sponsor’s point of view is that he did not damage himself or the bike!

Here are some of Kurt’s impressions of the new Ossa.

Generally it feels similar to a late model gas gas, but feels like it has more grip. This might have a bit to do with the Ohlins rear shock with separate rebound and compression adjustments.

It is very balanced to ride on rear wheel, and wheel stands up our driveway are now quite common.

Starting the bike - It is weird to just fill up and ride – no need to turn on the fuel tap, no need to put the choke on

It is easy to start –NO throttle and a maximum three kicks from cold – 2 slow kicks to charge up the injection circuit, then one to start it.

Once the engine is warm then it only takes one kick to start.

The engine is very smooth – with plenty of torque- The engine is clean and crisp throughout

-linear power with plenty of top end

-feels un-stall able

- There is no change to the idle even if you are on a steep down hill section.

The electronics looks after the timing and mixture – we are mixing the petrol at 110-1 with fully synthetic oil. (or up to 140-1 if you want to)

The Clutch is light and precise, and when you look at the technical manual it looks very like a Gas Gas clutch.

The rear wheel is sealed – so no leaking rear wheel through the spoke holes

And of course with every new bike it has BNG (Bold New Graphics ....Ha Ha)

In Summary – Kurt is very pleased with his new bike.

Fun & Games

The Beanies that Mal Loone gave as prizes came in the 2 Day Title came in handy in the car park at Oatlands – however it was quite warm under the trees for the observers.

Ian Pickering DID NOT complete a face plant in the creek on Nigel Munday’s new bike this year!
