Rubber Industry is Trigger for Economic Growth of Indian Economy: Suresh Prabhu

By Dominick Rodrigues

Mumbai: Jan 17: The Union Minister for Commerce, Industry and Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu, today described the Rub-ber Industry as the “Trigger” of economic growth in India, while noting that it is heartening to witness the great strides by the Indian rubber industry, which has made a deep impact on several important global markets where it is able to make deep inroads. “This is a homegrown in-dustry and now, with improvements in terms of technology, India is now one of

the most sought-after countries suitable for making business investments and partnerships,” he said.

“On January 12 and 13, in Mumbai, we had organized the ‘Partnership Summit” which is the flagship event of the industry and in which 56 countries participated. On January 15 and 16, we had the ‘Global Aviation’ event – which was the first-ever of its kind in the world that drew all players from upstream and downstream. What is finished goods for some industry, becomes thermometer for some other industry. And that’s how the value chain gets integrated.”

“You cannot have aviation unless ground and air work together. Technol-ogy, aircraft manufacturers, ground-han-dlers, all have to work together. When Prime Minister NarendraModi asked me to take the actual responsibility for avia-tion, I asked the global agencies about how often they all got together. They said “What often? We never meet.” So I asked “Can you operate your business with-out all of you working together? If you cannot do this, then how can you’ll meet

together?” “So we decided to meet this challenge

by organizing the first ever ‘Global Avia-tion Summit’, which is in the true sense global because 89 countries participated. And all international civil aviation organi-sations and airports – including those in Canada – and IATA participated in the

event which ended yesterday. ““So we should consolidate our gains

and make Indian into a US$ 5-trillion economy – for which I have already pre-pared a plan. In fact, 20% of this amount comes from manufacturing, and I will try to see that the rubber industry contrib-utes to this in a good measure.”

India Rubber Expo (IRE) is currently Asia’s largest Rubber Exhibition and provides a unique opportunity for Indian companies to meet under one roof, showcase new technologies, share infor-mation, plan growth strat-egies and network with overseas companies.

02 18th January 2019 INDIAN RUBBER EXPO MUMBAI 2019

“We had a meeting this morning with the Tata Group about how they could contribute. We are therefore making a multipronged strategy to make it happen. And to do that, we are working on many ways including where I am trying to work with more than 150 companies to pro-vide market access to India’s products. I personally met ministers of many coun-tries in the last 15-16 months and we are working on a multi-pronged strategy in this regard. We have already prepared a strategy to increase India’s exports from the present US$ 329 billion with almost 10 per cent growth – especially at a time when the global economy is going down.”

“Besides this, we are also targeting new markets and products including new markets like Africa whose exports share is 54%, while India’s share is 10 %. There are so many countries like Africa in this con-nection. So I am inviting representatives separately from Africa, Latin America, Central Asia, South-East Asia for this. Also, we are trying to make agreements with countries like Africa and Latin America. But while we do this, we have to be very clear in our priorities that Indian industry must benefit. There is no point in just expanding India’s industry footprint. Therefore, a new template has been pre-pared because India is negotiating and I have told all of our negotiators. Also, three independent organisations have been ap-pointed who will be interacting with the

industry – and that feedback is going to our Prime Minister, so that we obtain our contacts and also benefit from them.I am not saying that only India should benefit, and not others. So this is the new strategy of getting into newer markets and we are preparing something for Africa, which

will be good for everybody. We are work-ing on a very comprehensive strategy to increase India’s economy at the macro level in the global markets, besidesalso in-creasing “Ease of Doing Business” that has been happening only at national level.”

“For the first time in the world, the World Bank has been mapping this at national level. We are doing “Ease of Do-ing Business” in every district of India and also mapping them to therefor increase the various industries’ and entrepreneurs ability to grow. How much more growth can happen if industries with these standards and abilities like these are able to grow.”

“While we are doing this at macro level, we have chosen six districts in India where we can increase their GDP growth by 3-4%. These include Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh (Prime Minister Naren-

draModi’s constituency of Varanasi), one in Vishakapatnam in the south and the other in the East of Vishakapatnam, and Maharashtra. Because of baseline, the difference in growth between Sindhdurg and Ratnagiri is 4 per cent. So if in all dis-tricts of India, the growth is more than four percent – then India’s GDP will grow by four percent. So if this growth hap-pens and percolates down to micro level, we thought from 1991 the trickle-down effect will happen. This will happen in 4-5 years time and once all districts start working like this, you can imagine what will happen, and that too based on em-ployment. Industry alone cannot provide employment.”

“We must have services sector growth and agriculture value-added growth. That can actually change their perception and they are working on it. And this will actually create jobs. There will be more jobs creation with economic activity hap-pening on the ground, more income in the hands of people. So we are working on it and also on a strategy for agriculture, which will get growth faster with income also getting better, and industry and ser-vices both will benefit. We have already an Agriculture Policy that is already ap-proved by the Cabinet. We have already identified what product from which dis-trict. For instance, bananas can be done from Jalgaon, Oranges from Nagpur, and grapes from Nasik. So we are doing this all

over India tomake this process go faster and already had finance meetings in Delhi in this regard. “

“We wanted to have ‘Cold Chain’ which has now happened in an integrated way where investment will also come and – in the process – agriculture will also get good economy also.”

“I believe in action and long-term policies with immediate action. For the railways, Rs 8,54,000crores investment is happening -- starting with Madhya Pradesh. So where rubber is concerned, I have consulted with all the state govern-ments and the concerned draft is almost ready, though there are challenges. We are however trying to balance the costs of rubber in its production and other facets,

and are working with the stakeholders to make it happen. I heard that Thailand has reduced their rubber productivity by three percent. But I think we cannot do

Union Minister for Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu has said that the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India is developing a National Rubber Policy to address various issues concerning the sector, with a view to boost pro-ductivity. He was speaking at the inaugural func-tion of the 10thedition of India Rubber Expo 2019, in Mumbai on Thursday

The Minister informed that a multi-pronged strategy is being formu-lated to boost India’s exports. He said that dur-ing the last 13-14 months, India’s exports have grown at 10%, despite the slowdown in the global economy.

A new template for such agreements has been prepared in consultation with the industry; three independent organiza-tions have been appointed who would interact with industry and give feed-back in steering the nego-tiations.

that because it is the farmers’ livelihood and survival. Therefore we are working on a proper strategy and soon, hopefully, we should be able to announce it soon. So I am sure that rubber industry will continue to grow, create employment op-portunities and exports, and also add to the economic growth of India. I am sure this exhibition will be the trigger for that very important development and change that will happen.”

Speaking on the occasion, Vishnu Bhimrajka, Chief Convenor, IRE 2019, said that just a year back,Indiahad leaped to the rank of 6th largest GDP,with the well-developed countries ahead of indiabeing USA, China, Japan, Germany and France. “The Indian economy is expected to dou-ble to US$ 5 trillion by 2024 and the leap will take India ahead of China well ahead in the 21st century. While India is one of the world’s largest economies, it is the second-largest rubber consumer in the world just behind China. There are plans to invest in Transportation, sanitation, Clean India, Digital India, tourism etc.”

“Rubber is in enormous demand as it is the raw material – integral to many industries. Application of rubber spans diverse purposes from company rub-ber stamps to manufacture of tyres, tubes and a large number of industrial products. India Rubber Expo 2019 is a great event to bring industries, geniuses together to empower, learn, stand and be strong with each other. The industry is a perfect forum for exchange of ideas, observations, regulatory reforms and emerging scientific technologies, as well as learning, networking, catching up with

present customers and making new ones. Your experience with this event will open new horizons for business. The event features exclusive international rubber conference, a workshop, domestic reverse buyer-seller meet and international re-verse buyer seller meet, which probably you must have never seen before. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the exhibitors, sponsors, managing com-mittee, organisers and support staff for organisingthis event. Mr Suresh Prabhu, who is also a believer in peoples partici-pation in working of the ministriesunder him, especially where the involvement of the stakeholders --.also encourages new ideas and viewpoints.”

“Suresh Prabhu is a man known for actions with a record for undertaking reforms and achievements in obtain-ing results. Besides being an advocate

for decisive growth and change, he is well respected for his integrity, passion and commitment towards society and well-known for his easy accessibility to the public. Featured among the top three Indian leaders of the future by a maga-zine from Hong Kong, Suresh Prabhu is currently minister for commerce industry and civil aviation,” said VikramMakar, Chairman, IRE 2019 and President of All India Rubber Industries Association, while describing the rubber industry as the lifeguard of the unique, flexible, versatile and indispensable, where virtually no industry would be functioning without products made of rubber.”

“Rubber is creating great opportuni-ties for all industries. On the other hand, globalization has been unprecedented, compelling for business here and against this backdrop, the Indian Rubber Ex-

ports 2019 is being held. This prospective show, which is being organized by AIRIA, has been a win-win opportunity for the rubber fraternity in India and overseas. Emerging with resurgent popularity over the years, we have endeavoured to make this 360-degrees-expo for excellence of the rubber sector. We are trying to take this from the national to the international level. We got overwhelming support from all the members of the rubber fraternity to make this event truly rewarding for everybody concerned with this industry, while also truly becoming a global player in the rubber industry. With raw materi-als chains investing, all rubber machinery parts fixed here, all technologists from the world over present here and workshops run by experts, Ire 2019 will truly become the kick-starter for the ‘Renaissance’ of the Indian Rubber Industry,” he added.

ISRPL - Harnessing the synergies of two global giantsBy Forever News

India’s first world-scale E-SBR facility has been set up by Indian Synthetic Rubber Private Limited (ISRPL), a joint venture company promoted by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Trimurti Hold-ing Corporation (THC), BVI (a 100% subsidiary of TSRC Corporation, Tai-wan). A shining example of interna-tional collaboration, it leverages on the core competencies of the two multinationals. ISRPL is the Platinum Sponsor of IRE 2019.

Commissioned in association with Marubeni Corporation, Japan in No-vember 2013 in the industrial town of Panipat, Haryana, the state-of-the-art, greenfield plant is a trail-blazing venture, which epitomizes international cooperation and syn-ergy amongst global giants. It is be-ing perceived as an advantage to the domestic tyre makers, whose entire E_SBR demand is being imported at present.

The plant has been running since the last 5 years and manufacturing SBR 1500, SBR 1502, SBR 1712, and SBR 1723 grades, which are supplied as raw material to tyre and non-tyre companies in India. Exports have also been made to several custom-ers in South East Asian, Middle East countries and south Africa.

Path-breaking venture:

The flag ship project, spread over 57 acres, comprises a process unit, a state of the art rubber finishing line, a robot controlled packaging and

loading equipment, offsite storage facilities, a DM water plant, an ad-vanced effluent treatment plant in-cluding a reverse osmosis (RO) plant with zero-liquid effluent discharge, cooling water system and instru-mental plant air system.

Well-equipped R&D:

“ISRPL is backed by the R&D exper-tise of TSRC, who have many patents and innovations specific to synthetic rubber and thermoplastic elasto-mers. TSRC’s R&D centre located at Kaohsiung, Taiwan, has state-of-art facilitates to cater to the product ap-plication and development needs of the industry. Further, there are many experienced experts and an accom-plished technical service team to serve the tyre customers and ascer-tain the quality of E-SBR. The emul-sion pilot plant, which facilitates de-velopment of new e-SBR grades, can comply with growing demands of the customers, according to a com-pany spokesperson.

E-SBR Project Importance:

ISRPL’s project provides value ad-dition to the Butadiene stream of IOCL’s Panipat Naphtha Cracker Plant (PNCP). Further, it also enhances synergies by sharing critical utili-ties like steam, power and raw wa-ter necessary for the operation. The IOCL’s plant will also synergistically benefit from ISRPL’s plant by way of reduced hydrogen consumption and corresponding reduction in green-house gas (GHG) emissions.
