Design Process for 2010
Nordic Olympic Venue Callaghan Valley – something for everyone
Spring 2004
Spring 2004
CC Design process – initial step
FIRST ON PAPER:
• Create a Stadium solution
– Access to stadium for athletes, teams, (and also
spectators, media etc…)
– Athletes’ Compound (wax cabins, ski test area,
warm-up course)
CC Design process – initial step
FIRST ON PAPER:
• Look at available Terrain and Courses
– Distances and loops required
– Suitable terrain near stadium (for Sprint course)
– Location of and distance to suitable climbs
• Create a paper proposal (course layout) that met FIS
requirements

CC Design process – next step
START PRACTICAL WORK:
• NOTE: Difficult conditions
• NOTE: Moving in terrain best done on snow (snow-shoes)
• Convert/adjust paper-plan to terrain:
– Goal: Find “Canadian Identity”?
– Start with stadium (next slide)
– Follow terrain (old trails etc…)
– Minimize terrain and environmental impacts
– Avoid areas exposed to wind etc…
Biathlon
Cross Country
Cross-Country courses
• Minimize cost and large environmental issues
– Creek crossings
– Road crossings
– Avoid wetlands
– “Set-back” from creeks (30 m or 15 m)
• Further course work
– Identify separate snowmobile courses
– Identify spectator access to trail system
Cross-Country courses
• Consider mass-start and group skiing
– Width of uphills (9m where possible)
• for Overtaking
– Technical/challenging downhill sections must be
wide for safety
– Avoid compression in corners (ex. Sapporo)
– Constant radius through corner
– Important to bank/elevate outside corners
– Places for feeding stations & Coaching zones
– Space for snowmobile camera
Construction process
• Very difficult
• Local construction expertise required
• Large machines needed
• Expensive
• “Hands-on” work important (every 2nd day)
• Make final product look natural (seed grass, add soil to edges of trail etc…)
• Create natural and nice rock walls etc…
• ‘Check-points” along the way (Hermod/FIS)

OL løyper ikke bærekraftig
• Må være løyper for alle nivåer
• For etterbruk er «grønne» (lette) løyper det
viktigste
