Corvair News:
Well another month of screaming hot temperatures, man I
can't wait for winter. I keep putting off all of my projects
because of the heat, so when I cools off I have no excuses.
So of course you heard about my Corvair-8 and my amazing
trip to Oregon. After being gone 4 weeks I'm still trying to
catch up, so back to the grind. At the last club meeting we
talked about the club calendar, we either need existing photos
or get together and take some new ones. I did buy a projector
so we should be able to look at some photos next meeting.
There are a few car shows coming up; one in Downey Ca. on
the 10th. I'm not going to make it to that one, but I will have a
couple of my cars at the show on Oct 1st at the speedway and
at the fan belt toss Oct 28-30th. I have also decided to sell my
62 4-door she just hit 18,300 original miles. She needs more
care than I can give her, she won't go cheap. I'm sure I forgot
many things to tell you about, we'll take care of that next time.
See y’all at the next meeting. Maybe with a new surprise.
~ Mike the pres.
Message from the President
The 50th Yenko Stinger Reunion was an informal part of The
WeatherTech International Challenge with Brian Redman
presented by HAWK (Vintage Cars). There were 14 Corvair
Stingers registered for a featured race.
Pennsylvania Chevrolet
dealer Don Yenko,
famous for highly-tuned
street Corvettes,
Camaros, Chevelles and
Novas, produced 100
such "Stingers" based on
Corvair Corsas for SCCA homologation in 1966. The car won
the D-Production SCCA National Championship for 1967.
The Yenko Stingers had
their own race, won by
Mike Levine, who had
the advantage of having
a small block Chevy V8
where others had a rear
seat.

Events, Gatherings, Shows (Continued):
The 50th annual Ultra Van Motor Coach Club National Rally is
coming to Tombstone, Arizona, October 2-8 and will be held at
the Tombstone RV Park and Campground.
We are expecting approximately 10 of these Class A
motorhomes to invade the high desert, from all over the
country. This is a good chance to see these beautiful beasts,
also known as Whales on Wheels, up close and personal. I will
be there with the Whale, with my brand new 3.0 liter EFI
Corvair engine, built by Mike at SC Performance. He has put a
lot of time and effort into the rebuild, and I can not wait to get
the install done and get back on the road!
All UltraVans produced from 1962 through 1969 were
originally Corvair powered, with Corvair Powerglide transaxles
and rear trailing arm suspension (the 1970 models used
Chevrolet 307 V-8's). Most of the UltraVans are still running
Corvair power, but there are a few V-8 water pumper
conversions, as well.
Corvair enthusiasts as well as vintage camper admirers are
invited to come down and have a look, but be warned: Upon
seeing these rare animals in action, you may be compelled to
get one of your own. Come on down to Tombstone!

Show Report:
HOT AUGUST NIGHTS - 2016, 30TH ANNIVERSARY Report and Photos By G. H. Ransom
From the moment you hear that first engine roar to life,
you're hooked.
Excitement revs up, and the love affair red-lines. Reno, the
"Biggest Little City" shifts into high gear for Hot August Nights
(HAN), where hundreds of thousands come to pay tribute to
the exquisitely powerful automobiles and electric guitars
broadcasting music of the '50s, '60s, and some from the '70s.
It's a delicious classic combination that comes served with
poodle skirts, Cruiser skirts, fuzzy dice, and root beer floats.
This "happening" begins in Virginia City for two days (Friday
and Saturday) and then migrates to the Reno/Sparks epicenter
the following Tuesday through Sunday after which a two and a
half hour grand finale parade down Virginia Street completes
the festivities. The whole complex affair is choreographed
quite smoothly.
So what are the fast facts of this auto extravaganza? To begin
with, over 500 volunteers dedicate their time to make this
event happen. There are over 6,000 registered classic vehicles
that attend the event each year. It's open to any 1976 or older
vehicles. Typically, participants come from an average of 38
states; 50% are from California. Canadians represent many of
the cool rides. Dragsters race down a 1/16 mile track for cash
prizes. And speaking of prizes, at $160,000, HAN offers the
largest collective show-n-shine purse in the world!
The Swap Meet and Cool Car Corral boasts more than 700
vendors and almost 500 classic vehicles for sale. A twisty road
course is always set up next to the swap meet where wannabe
Mario Andrettis can test their mettle.

Will there be a 31st. edition in 2017? You bet there will. But
make your room reservations early; really. The most
reasonably priced accommodations are outside of the major
towns. Investigate Carson City, Fallon, Fernley, and Verdi.
Chrome, blowers, wide whites, and sometimes punishing
decibels. Ain't it grand? Will I see you there next year? I'll most
likely be tooling around in a Corvair convertible. It's so great to
cruise under that "Biggest Little City" arch with spectators
lining both sides of the streets shouting their approval. Does it
get any better than this? Probably not!

Tech Articles & Tips:
Back in the 1970s due to Government requirements the
automobile industry was transitioning from vehicles with
excessive pollution emissions, and frequent tune-ups to fewer emissions and 50K to 100K mile tune-ups.
To accomplish these drastic changes several significant
technology improvements were initiated, starting with the
removal of tetra-ethyl lead from the gasoline sold for
automobile use. The reason for this was simple. This lead
additive, used to improve the octane rating of gasoline, coated the spark plug terminals, and being electrically
conductive fouled the plugs preventing them from firing as
necessary.
With the lead gone, the next step was to improve the quality
and intensity of the spark used to ignite the gas/fuel mixture
in the cylinders. This required higher voltages and currents.
Thus, they produced electronic ignition systems capable of producing big, fat, sparks to do the job.
But these high-energy sparks also increased the erosion of
the spark plug electrodes. You see, each time a plug fires, the
spark vaporizes a few molecules of the electrode tips so that continued use of these spark plugs results in an increase of
the electrode gap over time. And as you know, an increase in
the gap requires an increasing voltage to have a spark jump
across this gap. This is complicated, too, by the fact that it requires different voltages to fire spark plugs depending on certain engine conditions. For example, engine loading (e.g.,
acceleration) requires a higher voltage. So it is possible for continued use of spark plugs to suffer a gap increase to the point where the ignition system while easily firing plugs in normal operation, will mis-fire when the engine is somewhat
stressed by acceleration. Of course, any mis-firing will now release excessive pollutants and is just not permitted in today's automobiles.
So how did the car manufacturers reduce plug tip erosion to
allow positive assurance that the plugs will last up to 100,000 miles? By making spark plugs electrodes from certain very
hard metals that have higher melting temperatures: namely Platinum and Iridium. And by changing the shape and size of
the center electrode in these plugs.
These changes all allowed the car manufacturers to claim the
100K mile spark plug durability because the electronic
ignition systems provided the hot sparks required to fire these new spark plugs.
But non-electronic ignition systems are not so kind to
Platinum and Iridium plugs. The metals themselves and especially the small contact area of the center electrode require higher voltages and intensity than stock systems usually can provide under stress conditions. In addition, it
appears that the center electrode of platinum plugs tends to foul when used with stock-type ignition systems due to lack of spark intensity and/or heat.
So experience has shown that Platinum and Iridium spark
plugs just are not completely compatible with the Corvair's stock ignition system. And unfortunately, we do not have enough unbiased and independent data on what modifications to the stock system might make these new plug
types acceptable. We recommend that you continue to use stock-type replacement plugs for your Corvair.
PLATINUM SPARK PLUGS ARE NOT RECOMMENDED FOR MOST CORVAIRS WITH STOCK IGNITION SYSTEMS By Bob Helt - Rev 1.1
A used Bosch platinum plug for Corvairs. Note the different
center electrode shape and construction from the conventional
plugs used in Corvairs. These plugs are designed to work with
high energy ignition systems.

Finish Line:
Ypsilanti built Corvairs revisted the Willow Run Assembly Plant
on August 20, 2016 during the plant open house. How
privileged we felt to be allowed inside where these air-cooled
wonders were assembled.
Thanks to Matt and Adam for allowing us inside and giving us
the Corvair thrill of our lives. We hope to do it again next year.
The YPSIBLT Plate on my blue Corvair was made to pay tribute
to the workers who built that wonderful car I love so much. I
also own the white Corvair with the VAIRLDY plate.
I was like a kid inside of a Corvair candy store when we were
given the permission to bring our Corvairs inside the Willow
Run Assembly Plant on the Chevrolet side.
It's been many years since a Corvair has been inside. I was a
very happy Corvair Lady that day. For those who missed out
on this adventure, don't worry. Plans are being made to do
this again next year. I will keep everyone informed as to the
dates, etc.
