Bandon Brush pickup set to beginBANDON — The third
brush and yard debris removal event of 2020 will start on Monday, Oct. 12. Bandon Disposal will be picking up piles of brush and yard debris. City resi-dents are allowed approx-imately two pickup loads of brush and yard debris at no cost. Please note that the pick-up begins on Oct. 12, but it may take several weeks for Bandon Disposal to pick up in every area of town.
• Simply place your brush and yard debris in the right-of-way alongside the street adjacent to your house PRIOR TO Monday, Oct. 12.
• Do NOT put out your yard waste more than one week (Oct. 5) before sched-uled pick-up date.
• The maximum allowed is approximately two pick-up loads.
• Anything more than two pickup loads will not be picked up and will be the homeowner’s responsibility to get it removed.
• No items longer than 5 feet in length will be picked up.
• Limit to one pile per address, multiple piles will not be picked up and will be the homeowner’s responsi-bility to get it removed
• Limit your items to woody yard debris such as branches, brush, gorse, etc.
• Grass clippings and leaves will also be picked up, provided they are placed in biodegradable paper bags, no plastic bags will be accepted
• Other items and
materials, such as metals, appliance, furniture, house-hold garbage, etc. will not be picked up and will be the homeowner’s responsibility to get it removed.
• Avoid placing your pile under overhead utility lines or overhanging trees, since a boom truck is used to pick up debris.
• Locate your pile away from fire hydrants and utili-ty boxes, and do not impede sidewalks or pedestrian walkways.
If you get missed or have more than the two pickup loads, please contact Ban-don Disposal at 541-347-9633 to get a price quote and schedule a special pick-up, at a later date.
A total of three brush and yard debris removal events are held each year.

BSD urges families to apply for meals
BANDON — The Ban-don School District will be participating in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs Expanded Income Guidelines (EIG) for the 2020-2021 school year.
The normal federal pro-gram allows students from households with income up to 185% of the federal
poverty level to qualify for free or reduced meals.
The Oregon Legislature expanded those income guidelines to include house-holds with income between 185%-300% of the federal poverty level. Qualifying for EIG does not qualify your household for other programs or discounts.

Celebrate National Estuaries Week Sept. 20-26SOUTH COAST —
Estuaries protect communi-ties from flooding, provide habitat for wildlife and offer abundant recreational opportunities. The South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve invites the public to join them in celebrating these national treasures located right in our own backyard.
“The pandemic has made it clear that the natural plac-es on the coast are vital for people’s physical and mental wellbeing,” said Debo-rah Rudd, Reserve public involvement coordinator in a press release. “In 2020, we remain firmly committed to celebrating the places we love. We also recognize the
need to celebrate in ways that protect public health and honor the challenges faced by staff and their fam-ilies, especially as wildfires are spreading in our region during the pandemic.”
*Follow COVID safety guidelines: Take Care Out There (https://traveloregon.com/things-to-do/out-door-recreation/take-care-out-there/) and fire restric-tions before you go out: ODF Fire Restrictions Map.
Monday, Sept. 21: Throughout the week, post pictures of various estuarine habitats with the hashtag #estuariesweek or pictures of the people whose work helps make it possible for everyone to benefit from
estuaries and natural places on the coast using the hashtag #estuaryheroes. (Stay tuned on the South South’s social media pages for their own hero updates next week.) Be sure to tag South Slough in your photo too #southsloughreserve and check out the South Sloughs Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages.
Tuesday, Sept. 22: Get outdoors in your backyard, nearby estuary habitat, or other natural space. Take about 10-15 minutes to really observe everything around you, using your senses of sight, hearing, and smell. Take a few minutes to write down your obser-vations and any thoughts
that came to mind as you experienced them. Consider sketching one or two of those ideas on the page, add color with watercolor paints, colored pencils, or pens. For inspiration, go to the inter-national nature journaling blogsite.
Wednesday, Sept. 23: Help the estuary by shop-ping at your local farmer’s market. Farmers selling at markets minimize the amount of waste and pollu-tion they create. Many use certified organic practices, reducing the amount of synthetic pesticides and chemicals that pollute our soil and water. A growing number are also adopting other low-impact practices,
such as on-site compost-ing, planting cover crops and complex crop rotation that help mitigate climate change and other environ-mental issues. Visit the Coos Bay Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. through Oct. 28. Visit the Bandon Farmer’s Market Fridays or Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. through December.
Thursday, Sept. 24: Write a story about why you care about your Reserve and post it on: https://www.nerra.org/get-involved/share-your-story/ remember to add #southsloughreserve
Friday, Sept. 25: Not yet a member of the Reserve’s nonprofit partner, Friends of
the South Slough Reserve, Inc. (FOSS). Go to https://fossnerr.org/ to become a member or donate.
Saturday, Sept. 26: We will be exploring dino-saurs for this month’s installment of Virtual Tide of the Toddlers on Facebook Live (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/virtual-tide-of-the-tod-dlers-dinosaurs-tick-ets-118373110159). As we delve into the past, we’ll discover what made the dinosaurs so successful. We will also read a story and make a special dinosaur pop-up card. The program starts at 10 a.m. on Face-book Live. The program will be about 40-45 minutes.
