Chairmans Address:

Having been voted in for 2011 again, either we are doing a good job or there is a lack of Members who are not willing to volunteer. I personally think it’s the latter! Anyway, many thanks to all who attended the AGM and voted in the Committee en bloc for 2011. We have many different Outings lined up and a few changes in the Calendar from mistakes we learnt from over the last year.

James seems to be settling in and has already sent another draft of the latest magazine so we seem to be on track with publishing this on time. We are sending Website Password instructions with the Membership Cards to enable you to interact with other members on our Website and hope that you will enjoy this facility.

Admittedly, we are still not getting enough Vintage cars out at the Outings. We have tried to restrict mileages of our Outings to within a 200Km round trip; offered 50% Discount incentives to Members; given out Fuel Vouchers and assured you of a back up crew in case of breakdowns but none of this seems to be working. We feel that the prime purpose of the Club is Vintage and Classic Cars but find that we are getting to be more of a social Club that gets together for Barbeques, Lunches and Treasure Hunts. Whilst that is not really a bad thing, we feel very strongly that we are going off track and need to see more of the cars at our functions. Obviously, there is something we are doing wrong so I would really appreciate your comments as to what we can do to encourage Members to bring their cars out. Let’s all try and thrash this one out and come up with a solution.

See you at the next Outing, in your Vintage and Classic Car!!

Monte

Editors Message:

Thanks are due to the various contributors who sent in art work and stories for this months magazine. Thanks to Monte for the details on the Indian Maharajas and their cars and to John for the details on yet another of his fabulous vehicles.

We also have an Article from Roger Tanner on Kenyan registrations and other East African plates which he was kind enough to post to me. The images of old Kenyan vehicles including the one on the Rhino and the Chevy on the front are from http://www.sikh-heritage.co.uk/herit-age/sikhhert%20EAfrica/Nostalgic%20Miscellaneous.html. I have used these throughout themagazine and hope theywill add a bit of spice orlead to some interestingmemories. There is no accompanying article and therefore I have avoided the temptation to gather these into one.

Finally we have a post-card and accompnayingtext of a 1920s vehicle inNakuru - again if we know any of the history behind this it would be great to share it.

Keep on motoring

1910 Ford Model R

THE YEAR IS 1910This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine!

************ ********* ***********The year is 1910One hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1910:************ ********* ************The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only.Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower !The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour.

Ford Model T Summits Ben Nevis, Scotland

BRENTWOOD, Essex, 05 January 2011 – To celebrate the centenary of Ford of Britain in 2011, the company is exploring its photo archive to reveal rarely seen images.Ford’s British roots will be illustrated each week by a specially selected picture. This week’s image features the epic 1911 trek up Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest peak, in a Ford Model T.

Volunteers have been sought to dismantle a vintage car and reassemble it on the summit of Ben Nevis. The effort will be held during a week-long Model T Ford rally in Lochaber in May. Landscape conservation charity, the John Muir Trust, which owns the mountain, have agreed to allow the Model T Ford on the peak.To commemorate the event, a car will be dismantled at Achintee, near Fort William, and the parts carried to the summit before being taken apart again.

Registrations: Roger Tanner kindly sent in this information in August about the Kenyan and East African Registrations. I was certainly interested to see it and hope it may be of equal interest to those members who don’t already know this information. I particularly liked the OHMS (On Her Majesties Service) for the government.

A Car History by John Wroe:DODGE 1937 D5 SEDAN REGISTRATION NO. T5091COLOUR: WHITE

This was restored and in good running order when the owner Donald MacDonald sold it to Kenya’s Principal/Immigration officer Johnathan Njenga. In 1985 when I was negotiating with Jonathan’s widow Jane to purchase the 1928 4cyl Chevrolet part of the deal was that I could not buy the Chev-rolet without buying the Dodge.

This was a major worry for me as I did not par-ticularly like the Dodge which was now Sunken into the ground and most of the engine had been dismantled and lay in a very rusty boot. However I dearly want-ed the Chevrolet and so in 1995 I also became the owner of a 1937 D5 Dodge Sedan. Thanks to Auto Ma-chinery in Nairobi’s in-dustrial area I was able to get the missing parts needed to restore the car although new wheel cylinder came from the States.

Page 13: VCCCK Magazine 2 2011

The dark blue almost black paint was changed to white and it became a well liked and admired member of my car col-lection.The Dodge was used by the BBC in a docu-mentary they did on the murder of Lord Errol in I think the early 2000’s. Water based paint was brought in to paint it black which should sup-posedly have washed off afterwards. It didn’t wash off and I had to bear the cost of a re-spray.

Old 1920s car alongside Lake Nakuru

This photo is from a car sales site http://www.pedigree-automobiles.co.uk

Appears to be a photograph printed up as a postcard showing a mother and son alongside an open-sided 1920s car, complete with Shell 2 gallon fuel can on the running boards. The hand-written note on the back mentions ‘hot snow’ and ‘de-posits on the shores of Lake Nakuru’

Classic Car Show features nostalgic autos http://www.courierpress.com/news/2011/mar/20/full-of-automotive-admiration/

EVANSVILLE — Inspiration gleams in the eye of the beholder in Washington Square Mall this weekend, where the Old Tyme Auto Club presents its annual Antique and Classic Car Show. Brandon Baggett, a professional magi-cian, found it, at first, in a 1961 white Lincoln Continental sedan with a motorized convert-ible top and “suicide” rear-seat doors. “That’s a mighty big prop,” he said. “I’m trying to fig-ure out how to make it disappear.”

Lada, the car that spawned a thousand playground jokes, could be returning to UK showrooms. But will British motorists take the Russian marque to their hearts? You have to pity any driver of a Lada who was unfortunate enough to find himself the target of that macho conversation opener: “So, what are you driving these days?”Confessing to buying a car which had spawned its own brand of wise-cracks cannot have been an easy experience. But after a 13-year hiatus, the Lada could be returning to these shores. The only good thing about them was that they came with a big toolkitHonest John, motoring journalistThe Russian car giant that builds the Lada, AvtoVAZ, has struck a part-nership with French carmaker Renault. Both companies are keen to re-introduce a new and improved version of the Lada to the UK as a “credit crunch cruiser” - a super-cheap car (it would cost £5,000) suited to our new era of austerity. Hardly a classic despite the age of the 124 design but I did enjoy driving these - very popular in Ethiopia.
