Welcome to the Capital Pres Family’s VBS Together!

We are so excited to share VBS Together with you and your family this year! This booklet is designed to help you follow along with VBS each day. In it, you will find the daily Bible stories, memory verses, space to draw and write with each lesson, suggested activities, family discussion questions, missions moments, and song lyrics. All these things are optional but are a great way to dig deeper into each day’s lesson!

This year our Missions focus is Casa Chirilagua, a ministry in the Chirilagua neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia, where a lot of families speak Spanish and moved here from Central America. At Casa, they spend time building relationships with families and kids in the neighborhood so that they can share God’s love with them. You can learn more on their website: casachirilagua.org.

To make the VBS material for all ages, each day we have provided options for shorter memory verses as well as suggested readings from the Jesus Storybook Bible and Egermeier’s Bible Story Book. Choose what works best for you! Copies of both story Bibles are available for free at the church!

We are so excited that you have joined us and can’t wait to see what’s in store for the week!

The Bible is a big book with lots of different stories and people. We believe that all these little stories are telling one BIG story—the story of God loving and rescuing his people! One of the easiest ways to think about this big story is described by what we call the Four-Chapter Gospel. The first chapter is Creation. It begins in Genesis 1 when God creates the whole world; that creation even includes you! When he created everything, God said that it was very good. It was perfect, and he gave people a very important job—to fill creation and continue making it a good place to live! Chapter 2 is the Fall. The Fall describes when sin entered the world. In Genesis 3, we learn that Adam and Eve wanted to be like God—so they disobeyed him. Their perfect relationship with God was broken. There was no way to fix this relationship by themselves. Because of this, everyone who is born also has a broken relationship with God. The only way to fix this relationship is for God to send a Savior to his people. In Chapter 3 - Redemption - God redeems! We can read about redemption in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John). Because God loves each of us so much, he sends his only Son, Jesus to come and rescue his people. Jesus lives a perfect life, demonstrating his love for us by healing the sick, calming the storms, and raising the dead. But he doesn’t stop there! God’s justice requires that our sins be punished by death and separation from him. After living a perfect life, Jesus willingly died for us on the cross—taking the full punishment for our sins! Our relationship with God is restored as soon as we believe and trust in Jesus. Chapter 4 is called Restoration. This chapter hasn’t happened yet, but we know it will because God promised it (and we know that God keeps all his promises!). Jesus will come back and finish making things right. On that day, God will end all sad and bad things. Everything will be GOOD and, even better, we'll finally be able to see Jesus face-to-face and live with him forever. Today we live between chapters 3 & 4. Jesus already lived, died, and rose again, but we are waiting for him to come back! This week, we will see God’s greatness through his son Jesus and his life on Earth. This is all part of Chapter 3: Redemption. Jesus came down from heaven to rescue his people and restore our relationship with God. Keep your eyes and ears open to learn all about how great God is and what He offers his people both 2000 years ago and TODAY!

see him! Is there a famous person that you really want to meet?

2. Can you remember a time when you were sick? What are fears you have associated with sickness? Thank about COVID, family being sick, etc. How does this story about Jesus answer those fears?

Suggested After VBS Activities

Activities 1. The story today mentions a lot of feelings. We all have lots of feeling! We get happy,

sad, mad, scared. Today we are going to make our own feelings chart. On a piece of paper write out as many emotions as you can think of and draw pictures of a face for each one. Put this picture somewhere your family can see and use it to help name how you are feeling.

2. If you came to kick-off, do the “Hands Craft” you picked up. Discussion Questions

1. Jesus has the power to bring people back from the dead. If you could have any superpower what would it be?

2. Death can be really hard. Talk about a time you or your family has had experience with death. What was that like? How does this story and knowing Jesus help us with hard situations like death?

Missions Moment

• Today for Missions, we are going to LEARN. Our neighbors in Chirilagua have made long journeys from their home countries to the United States. Check out the next page to learn more about their journey.

Page 15: VBS Together 2021 Booklet - capitalpres.org

15

Many families in Chirilagua come from countries in Central America like Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. The journey from Central America to America is like walking around the national mall 1,500 times! WOAH.

Why do they leave Central America? • Don’t feel safe • Can’t find a job • Need to support their families

Thee journey from Central America to the United States can be long and hard. How can you help? You can pray! Take a minute to pray with your family for those who are making the journey right now… “Merciful God, we pray to you for all families, men, women, and children who are immigrating. We ask you to protect them and to watch over those who have made it here safely. I pray that you guide them in whatever obstacles are to come and in whatever they are going through now. Help us to always remember to love our neighbors well, wherever they are. “

Lyrics to VBS Songs Greater – MercyMe Bring your tired, and bring your shame Bring your guilt and bring your pain Don't you know that's not your name You will always be much more to me Every day I wrestle with the voices That keep telling me I'm not right But that's alright 'Cause I hear a voice and he calls me redeemed When others say I'll never be enough And greater is the One living inside of me Than he who is living in the world In the world In the world And greater is the One living inside of me Than he who is living in the world Bring your doubts, and bring your fears Bring your hurt, and bring your tears There'll be no condemnation here You are holy, righteous and redeemed Every time I fall, there'll be those who will call me a mistake. Well that's okay 'Cause I hear a voice and he calls me redeemed When others say I'll never be enough And greater is the One living inside of me Than he who is living in the world In the world In the world And greater is the One living inside of me Than he who is living in the world There'll be days I lose the battle Grace says that it doesn't matter 'Cause the cross already won the war He's Greater, He's Greater I am learning to run freely Understanding just how he sees me And it makes me love him more and more He's Greater, He's Greater There'll be days I lose the battle Grace says that it doesn't matter

'Cause the cross already won the war He's Greater, He's Greater I am learning to run freely Understanding just how he sees me And it makes me love him more and more He's Greater, He's Greater 'Cause I hear a voice and he calls me redeemed When others say I'll never be enough And greater is the One living inside of me Than he who is living in the world In the world In the world And greater is the One living inside of me Than he who is living in the world There'll be days I lose the battle Grace says that it doesn't matter 'Cause the cross already won the war He's Greater, He's Greater I am learning to run freely Understanding just how he sees me And it makes me love him more and more My God is greater (He's Greater, He's Greater) Than he who is living in the world
