TRANSFORM YOUR EPIC EHR ENVIRONMENT Deploying an Electronic Health Record (EHR) is inherently one of the most important choices, and it is often the largest single investment a healthcare organization will ever make. Healthcare organizations are making Epic their EHR of choice because of its unique ability to provide a “single view” of the patient, and foundation for evidence-based-decision support, quality management, and outcomes reporting. . Due to its unique design, Epic EHR requires a carefully planned information infrastructure to ensure proper performance and avoid risks. Epic environments place demands for availability, performance, and security on your hospital’s existing IT infrastructure along with the need to shift more focus and resources on managing your Epic EHR to gain the benefits described above.

For these reasons, the Epic decision also presents an opportunity to transform IT, beginning with an optimized EHR infrastructure that provides the high performance and availability demanded by all of today’s mission critical applications. It’s an opportunity to extend your virtualization initiative to include Epic and other clinical applications, and to take a holistic and enterprise approach to protecting all of your patient information. Deploying Epic is also a good time to move forward in your journey to private cloud to gain the flexibility, scalability, and cost reductions and the maximum benefit from Epic EHR.

With more Epic experience than any other vendor and deep Epic knowledge, EMC recommends Vblock™ Systems and Vblock Data Protection from VCE, representing the next evolution of IT, to mitigate risks associated with deploying Epic.

SIMPLIFY YOUR EPIC IT INFRASTRUCTURE EMC® and VCE work closely with Epic to deliver lab-tested, Epic-validated solutions that speed performance, simplify management, enhance data protection and increase productivity. EMC understands the IT needs of the healthcare enterprise and uses our expertise and extensive experience with Epic to help you deploy Epic with confidence.

VBLOCK SYSTEMS Vblock Systems unleash simplicity by delivering the efficiency and business agility of virtualization and cloud computing. Seamlessly integrating best-in-class compute, network, and storage technologies from industry leaders Cisco, EMC, and VMware, Vblock Systems provide dynamic pools of resources that can be intelligently provisioned and managed to address changing demands of your Epic EHR environment. Vblock Systems are built on a single, highly secure, standardized, infrastructure, and then pre-integrated, tested, and further validated with EMC offerings for deduplication, backup and recovery. Vblock Systems take the complexity and risk out of managing the healthcare IT infrastructure allowing healthcare organizations focus significantly more attention and resources where they belong— on leveraging your investment in Epic.

The unprecedented scalability, configurability, five 9s—99.999%—of availability, systems visibility, security, and data protection makes Vblock System 720 a perfect choice. Vblock Data Protection and Mobility provides you a choice of safeguards, optimized for virtualized or cloud environments. You will get highly reliable backup and recovery, data replication, business continuity, and workload mobility that ensure critical protection for your Epic environment and help your organization meet HIPAA compliance requirements.

VCE Vision™ Intelligent Operations VCE Vision Intelligent Operations provides intelligent systems management of Vblock Systems, optimizing services for a converged infrastructure and integrating directly into VMware technologies. VCE Vision Intelligent Operations also provides an extensible API for leading management tools to protect investments in existing management frameworks.

EMC industry-leading storage platforms deliver the high performance and reliability required to support the intensive I/O workloads characteristic of an Epic environment.

At the core of a large Vblock 720 System lies an EMC Symmetrix VMAX storage platform. This powerful, trusted and smart storage solution currently supports more Epic production environments than any other storage platform. VMAX comes with built-in support for external servers using RSA® Data Protection Manager for the Symmetrix VMAX D@RE (data-at-rest encryption). This includes key management for maximum flexibility in securing data at the drive-level, both capabilities helpful in addressing HIPAA and HITECH regulations.

VMAX provides the foundation for six 9s of high availability and resiliency that Epic EHR environments demand. It enables direct memory access to data for optimized I/O operations, which is an ideal design for the Epic production environment and its 80-second write cycle. Dynamic cache partitioning for VMAX allows Epic users to prioritize I/O’s so the production database delivers a consistent performance.

“We’re more competitive because we can provision new infrastructures right away and handle spikes in processing loads by the states without burdening our engineers.” Marivi Stuchinsky, Asst. Vice President, Enterprise Infrastructure Services, Molina Healthcare

Fully Automated Storage Tiering for Virtual Pools (FAST VP) moves active data

to high-performance storage tiers and inactive data to low-cost, high-capacity storage tiers, automatically optimizing performance in a tiered storage environment for Epic EHR. Reducing costs, footprint and management effort, FAST VP delivers automation and efficiency to your virtual data center to put the right data in the right place at the right time. It also maximizes utilization of Flash Drive capacity for high IOPS workloads and delivers single and sub-millisecond response times for “reads.”

EPIC BACKUP EXAMPLE • Six TB of Epic Cache fully backed

up in less than 5 hours every day

• Backup Epic every 30 minutes for better RPO

• 90.3% less Oracle backup data

• Achieved overall deduplication ratio of 38:1 for Epic

Restore your Epic environment fast – Backups are important, but fast recovery from an outage is essential. With EMC’s Backup and Recovery Solutions for Epic, full backups can be recovered in just one step, no need to deal with restoring a full backup and then dealing with subsequent incremental backups. The change block tracking mentioned for backing up Epic works “in reverse” for file level data recovery to the original location, to a new location, or to a “net new” virtual machine, dramatically shrinking your time-to-recovery. EMC provides a “fully-hydrated” copy of data for quick restore. All of these EMC replication products have been tested with Epic to support your business continuity strategies.

Continuous Operations, Mobility, Availability – EMC VPLEX resides between your servers and heterogeneous storage assets, making your IT infrastructure more resilient, while complimenting Epic’s best practices for disaster recovery. Federated Access Anywhere TM, available with VPLEX, enables a single copy of your data to be shared, accessed, and relocated over distance. This allows transparent load sharing between multiple sites, and the flexibility of relocating workloads between sites to manage peak periods of activity. Also, in the event of a disruption at one data center, the failed services can be restarted at the surviving site, minimizing time-to-recovery.
