Vayetze 1st Aliyah (Gen 28)10 Then Ya‘akov departed from Be’er-Sheva and went toward Haran. 11 He came to a certain place and stopped there all night because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of the place and put them for his pillows and lay down in that place to sleep. 12 He had a dream, and behold, a ladder was resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and behold, the messengers of Elohim were ascending and descending on it.

Vayetze 1st Aliyah (Gen 28)13 And behold, יהוה stood above it, and said: “I am יהוה Elohim of Avraham your father and the Elohim of Yitz’chak. The land on which you lie, I will give it to you and to your seed. 14 And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall spread out to the west and to the east, and to the north and to the south. And in you and in your seed shall all the clans of the earth be blessed.

Page 3: Vayetze

Vayetze 1st Aliyah (Gen 28)15 And behold, I am with you and shall guard you in all places wherever you go, and shall bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done that which I have spoken concerning you.”16 And Ya‘akov awoke from his sleep and said, “Truly, יהוה is in this place, and I did not know it.”

Page 4: Vayetze

Vayetze 1st Aliyah (Gen 28)17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of Elohim; and this is the gate of heaven.”18 And Ya‘akov rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. 19 He called the name of that place Beit-El [house of God], though, previously the name of the city was called Luz.

Page 5: Vayetze

Vayetze 1st Aliyah (Gen 28)20 And Ya‘akov made a vow, saying, “If Elohim will be with me and will keep me in this way that I am going and will give me bread to eat and a garment to put on 21 so that I return to my father's house in peace, then יהוה will be my Elohim 22 and this stone which I have set for a pillar shall be Elohim’s house, and of all that you give me I shall certainly give a tenth to you.”

Vayetze 2nd Aliyah (Gen 29)

1 Then Ya‘akov continued on his journey and came to the land of the people of the east. 2 He looked, and saw a well in the field, and behold, there were three flocks of sheep lying near it for out of that well they watered the flocks. Now a large stone was over the mouth of the well.

Page 7: Vayetze

Vayetze 2nd Aliyah (Gen 29)3 When all the flocks were gathered there, they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, then put the stone back to its place over the mouth of the well.4 Ya’akov said to them, “My brothers, where are you from?”And they said, “We are from Haran.”5 And he said to them, “Do you know Lavan the son of Nachor?”And they said, “We know him.”

Page 8: Vayetze

Vayetze 2nd Aliyah (Gen 29)

6 And he said to them, “Are things going well with him?”And they said, “Things are going well, and behold, his daughter Rachel is coming with the sheep.”7 And he said, “The day is yet long; it is not the time to take in the livestock. Water the sheep and go, pasture.”

Page 9: Vayetze

Vayetze 2nd Aliyah (Gen 29)

8 And they said, “We cannot do that, until all the flocks are gathered together, and they will roll the stone off the mouth of the well, and we shall then water the sheep.”9 While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she was a shepherdess.

Page 10: Vayetze

Vayetze 2nd Aliyah (Gen 29)10 And it came to pass, when Ya‘akov saw Rachel the daughter of Lavan his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Lavan his mother’s brother, that Ya‘akov went near and rolled the stone off the mouth of the well, and he watered the flock of Lavan his mother’s brother. 11 And Ya‘akov kissed Rachel and he raised his voice and wept.

Page 11: Vayetze

Vayetze 2nd Aliyah (Gen 29)12 And Ya‘akov told Rachel that he was her father’s relative and that he was Rivkah’s son, and she ran and told her father.13 Now it came to pass when Lavan heard the report of Ya‘akov, his sister's son, that he ran towards him, and he embraced him, and he kissed him, and he brought him into his house. He told Lavan all these matters.

Page 12: Vayetze

Vayetze 2nd Aliyah (Gen 29)14 And Lavan said to him, “Indeed, you are my bone and my flesh.”And so he stayed with him a whole month. 15 And Lavan said to Ya‘akov, “Because you are my relative, should you work for me gratis? Tell me what your wages shall be.”16 Now Lavan had two daughters; the name of the elder was Le’ah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

Page 13: Vayetze

Vayetze 2nd Aliyah (Gen 29)

17 Le’ah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel had lovely features and a lovely appearance.

Page 14: Vayetze

Vayetze 3rd Aliyah (Gen 29)18 Now Ya‘akov loved Rachel and said, “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.”19 Lavan said, “It is better that I give her to you than to give her to another man. Stay with me.” 20 So Ya‘akov served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had to her.

Page 15: Vayetze

Vayetze 3rd Aliyah (Gen 29)21 Then Ya‘akov said to Lavan, “Give me my wife, for my days are completed, that I may go in to her.”22 And Lavan brought together all the people of the place and made a feast. 23 And it came to pass in the evening, he took his daughter Le’ah and brought her to him, and Ya‘akov came to her. 24 And Lavan gave his maidservant Zilpah to his daughter Le’ah as a maidservant.

Page 16: Vayetze

Vayetze 3rd Aliyah (Gen 29)25 And it came to pass in the morning, and behold it was Le’ah! So he said to Lavan, “What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served with you? Why have you deceived me?”26 And Lavan said, “It is not the custom in our place to give the younger daughter before the firstborn.

Page 17: Vayetze

Vayetze 3rd Aliyah (Gen 29)27 Complete the week of this one, and we will give you the other also, for the service that you shall render me for another seven years.”28 And Ya‘akov did so, and he completed the week of this one, and he gave his daughter Rachel to him as a wife. 29 And Lavan gave his daughter Rachel his maidservant Bilhah, for a maidservant.

Page 18: Vayetze

Vayetze 3rd Aliyah (Gen 29)30 And he came also to Rachel, and he also loved Rachel more than Le’ah. And he served with him yet another seven years.31 And יהוה saw that Le’ah was unloved, so he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren. 32 And Le’ah conceived and bore a son, and she named him Re’uven [see, a son!], for she said, “Because יהוה has seen my affliction, for now my husband will love me.”

Page 19: Vayetze

Vayetze 3rd Aliyah (Gen 29)33 And she conceived again and bore a son, and she said, “Since יהוה has heard that I am unloved, he gave me this one too.” So she named him Shim‘on [hearing].34 And she conceived again and bore a son, and she said, “Now this time my husband will be joined to me, for I have borne him three sons.” Therefore he named him Levi [joining].

Page 20: Vayetze

Vayetze 3rd Aliyah (Gen 29-30)

35 And she conceived again and bore a son, and she said, “This time I will praise יהוה.” Therefore, she named him Y’hudah [praise]. And then she ceased bearing.1 And Rachel saw that she had not borne any children to Ya‘akov, and Rachel envied her sister, and she said to Ya‘akov, “Give me children, and if not, I am dead!”

Page 21: Vayetze

Vayetze 3rd Aliyah (Gen 30)2 And Ya‘akov became angry with Rachel, and he said, “Am I instead of Elohim, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”3 So she said, “Here is my maidservant Bilhah; come to her, and she will bear children on my knees, so that I, too, will be built up from her.”

Page 22: Vayetze

Vayetze 3rd Aliyah (Gen 30)4 So she gave him her maidservant Bilhah for a wife, and Ya‘akov came to her, 5 and Bilhah conceived, and she bore Ya‘akov a son. 6 And Rachel said, “Elohim has vindicated me, and he has also listened to my voice and has given me a son.” So she named him Dan [he judged].7 And Bilhah, Rachel's maidservant, conceived again and bore Ya‘akov a second son.

Page 23: Vayetze

Vayetze 3rd Aliyah (Gen 30)8 And Rachel said, “With divine bonds I have been joined to my sister; I have also prevailed.” So she named him Naftali [my wrestling].9 When Le’ah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her maidservant Zilpah, and gave her to Ya‘akov for a wife. 10 And Zilpah, Le’ah’s maidservant, bore Ya‘akov a son.

Page 24: Vayetze

Vayetze 3rd Aliyah (Gen 30)

11 And Le’ah said, “Luck has come!” So she named him Gad [good fortune].12 And Zilpah, Le’ah’s maidservant, bore Ya‘akov a second son. 13 And Le’ah said, “Because of my good fortune, for daughters have declared me blessed.” So she named him Asher [happy].

Page 25: Vayetze

Vayetze 4th Aliyah (Gen 30)

14 Re’uven went in the days of the wheat harvest, and found dudaim in the field and brought them to his mother Le’ah. And Rachel said to Le’ah, “Please give me some of your son’s dudaim [so that I can be fertile].”

Page 26: Vayetze

Vayetze 4th Aliyah (Gen 30)

15 But she said to her, “Is it a small matter that you have taken my husband? And would you take my son’s dudaim also?”So Rachel said, “Therefore, he can lie with you tonight in return for your son’s dudaim.”

Page 27: Vayetze

Vayetze 4th Aliyah (Gen 30)16 When Ya‘akov came in from the field in the evening, and Le’ah went out to meet him, and she said, “You must come to me, because I have hired you with my son’s dudaim.” And he lay with her that night.17 Elohim listened to Le’ah, and she conceived and bore Ya‘akov a fifth son.

Page 28: Vayetze

Vayetze 4th Aliyah (Gen 30)18 Then Le’ah said, “Elohim has given me my wages for I have given my maidservant to my husband.” So she named him Yissakhar [hire, reward].19 Le’ah conceived again and bore Ya‘akov a sixth son. 20 Then Le’ah said, “Elohim has presented me with a good present. This time my husband will dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Z’vulun [living together].

Page 29: Vayetze

Vayetze 4th Aliyah (Gen 30)

21 And afterwards, she bore a daughter and named her Dinah.22 Then Elohim remembered Rachel; and Elohim listened to her and opened her womb. 23 And she conceived and bore a son and said, “Elohim has taken away my reproach.”

Page 30: Vayetze

Vayetze 4th Aliyah (Gen 30)24 So she named him Yosef [may he add], saying, “May יהוה grant me yet another son.”25 It came to pass when Rachel had borne Yosef, that Ya‘akov said to Lavan, “Send me away, and I will go to my place and to my land. 26 Give me my wives and my children, for whom I worked for you, and I will go, for you know my work which I have worked for you.”

Page 31: Vayetze

Vayetze 4th Aliyah (Gen 30)

27 And Lavan said to him, “If only I have now found favor in your eyes. I have divined, and יהוה has blessed me for your sake.”

Page 32: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 30)28 He added, “Name your wages for me, and I will give it.”29 And he said to him, “You know how I have worked for you and how your livestock have fared with me. 30 For it was little that you had before I came, and it is now increased in multitude, and ,has blessed you wherever I turned. But now, when may I יהוהtoo, provide for my own house?”

Page 33: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 30)31 And he said, “What shall I give you?”And Ya‘akov said, “You shall not give me anything. If you will do this one thing for me, I shall feed and guard your flocks: 32 Let me pass through all your flocks today, removing from there every speckled and spotted sheep, and every brown lamb among the sheep and the spotted and speckled among the goats. And this will be my wages.

Page 34: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 30)

33 And my righteousness shall answer for me in time to come for it will come upon my wages. Whatever is not speckled or spotted among the goats or brown among the sheep, if found with me, will be considered stolen.”34 And Lavan said, “Very well! If only it would be as you say.”

Page 35: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 30)35 And he removed on that day the speckled and the spotted male goats, and all the speckled and spotted female goats and every one that had some white on it and all the brown ones among the sheep, and he gave them into the hand of his sons. 36 And he put a distance of three days’ journey between himself and Ya‘akov, and Ya‘akov fed the rest of Lavan’s flocks.

Page 36: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 30)

37 And Ya‘akov took green rods of poplar, and almond, and chestnut trees and peeled white strips upon them, exposing the white that was on the rods.

Page 37: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 30)

38 And he set the rods that he had peeled, into the gutters in the watering troughs where the flocks would come to drink opposite the other flocks, and they would come into heat when they came to drink, 39 and the flocks came into heat by the rods. And the flocks bore streaked, speckled, and spotted young.

Page 38: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 30)40 And Ya‘akov separated the lambs, and made the flocks face toward the streaked and all the brown in the flock of Lavan, and he put his own flocks apart, and did not put them with Lavan’s flock. 41 And it came to pass, that whenever the flocks that were bearing their first would come into heat, Ya‘akov would place the rods in the gutters, before the eyes of the flocks, in order to bring them into heat by means of the rods,

Page 39: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 30)

42 but if the flocks would delay, he would not place them, so that the ones that delayed were Lavan’s and the ones that bore their first became Ya‘akov’s. 43 And the man became exceedingly prosperous and he had many flocks, and maidservants and manservants, and camels and donkeys.

Page 40: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 31)1 And he heard the words of Lavan’s sons, saying, “Ya‘akov has taken all that belonged to our father, and from what belonged to our father he has made this entire wealth.” 2 And Ya‘akov saw Lavan’s face, that he was not disposed toward him as he had been yesterday and the day before.3 And יהוה said to Ya‘akov, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”

Page 41: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 31)4 So Ya‘akov sent and called Rachel and Le’ah to the field, to his flocks. 5 And he said to them, "I see your father's face, that he is not disposed toward me as he was yesterday and the day before, but the Elohim of my father was with me. 6 And you know that with all my strength I served your father, 7 but your father deceived me and changed my wages ten times, but Elohim did not allow him to harm me.

Page 42: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 31)

8 If he would say thus, ‘Speckled ones will be your wages,’ all the flocks would bear speckled ones; and if he would say thus, ‘Streaked ones will be your wages,’ all the flocks would bear streaked ones. 9 Thus, Elohim separated your father's livestock and gave it to me.

Page 43: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 31)

10 “And it came to pass at the time the flocks came into heat, that I lifted my eyes and saw in a dream, and behold, the male goats that mounted the flocks were streaked, speckled, and mottled. 11 And the messenger of Elohim spoke to me in a dream, ‘Ya‘akov.’ And I said, ‘Here I am.’

Page 44: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 31)12 And he said, 'Now lift your eyes and see that all the male goats mounting the flocks are streaked, speckled, and mottled, for I have seen all that Lavan is doing to you. 13 I am the El of Beit-El, where you anointed the pillar and where you made to me a vow. Now, arise, go forth from this land and return to the land of your birth.’ ”

Page 45: Vayetze

Vayetze 5th Aliyah (Gen 31)14 And Rachel and Le’ah answered and said to him, “Do we still have a portion or an inheritance in our father's house? 15 Are we not reckoned by him as strangers? For he has sold us, and also consumed our silver. 16 But all the wealth that Elohim took from our father is ours and our children’s. So now, all that Elohim said to you, do.”

Page 46: Vayetze

Vayetze 6th Aliyah (Gen 31)17 Then Ya‘akov rose, and he put his sons and his wives upon the camels, 18 and he drove all his livestock, and all his possessions that he had acquired, the purchase of his acquisition, which he had acquired in Paddan-Aram, to go to Yitz’chak his father in the land of Kena‘an.19 Now Lavan had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole the house idols that were her father’s.

Page 47: Vayetze

Vayetze 6th Aliyah (Gen 31)20 And Ya‘akov deceived Lavan the Arami by not telling him that he was fleeing. 21 So he fled with all that he had, and he arose and crossed the [Euphrates] River, and he directed his face toward the hill country of Gil‘ad.22 On the third day Lavan was told that Ya‘akov had fled. 23 So he took his relatives with him, and he pursued him seven days’ journey and he overtook him in the hill country of Gil‘ad.

Page 48: Vayetze

Vayetze 6th Aliyah (Gen 31)

24 And Elohim came to Lavan the Arami in a dream of the night and said to him, “Be careful that you do not speak to Ya‘akov, either good or evil.”25 And Lavan overtook Ya‘akov, and Ya‘akov had pitched his tent in the hill, and Lavan with his brothers pitched on Mount Gil‘ad.

Page 49: Vayetze

Vayetze 6th Aliyah (Gen 31)

26 Then Lavan said to Ya‘akov, “What have you done, that you concealed from me, and carried away my daughters like captives taken with the sword?

Page 50: Vayetze

Vayetze 6th Aliyah (Gen 31)27 Why have you fled secretly, and concealed from me, and not told me? I would have sent you away with joy and with songs, and with tambourine and with lyre? 28 And you did not allow me to kiss my sons and daughters. Now, you have acted foolishly. 29 I have the power to inflict harm upon you, but the Elohim of your father spoke to me last night, saying, ‘Beware of speaking with Ya‘akov either good or evil.’

Page 51: Vayetze

Vayetze 6th Aliyah (Gen 31)

30 But now, you have gone away, for you longed for your father’s house, but why have you stolen my gods?”31 And Ya‘akov answered, and he said to Lavan, “Because I was afraid, because I said, ‘Lest you steal your daughters from me.

Page 52: Vayetze

Vayetze 6th Aliyah (Gen 31)32 The one with whom you find your gods shall not live. In the presence of our brothers, see for yourself what is with me, and take it for yourself.” For Ya‘akov did not know that Rachel had stolen them.33 So Lavan went into Ya‘akov’s tent, and into Le’ah’s tent, and into the tent of the two handmaids, but he did not find them. And he came out of Le’ah’s tent and entered Rachel’s tent.

Page 53: Vayetze

Vayetze 6th Aliyah (Gen 31)34 But Rachel had taken the teraphim and put them into the camel saddle, and sat upon them; so Lavan felt about the entire tent but did not find them.35 And she said to her father, “Let my master not be annoyed, for I cannot rise before you, for the way of women is upon me.” So he searched but did not find the teraphim.

Page 54: Vayetze

Vayetze 6th Aliyah (Gen 31)36 And Ya‘akov was wroth, and he contended with Lavan, and he said to Lavan, “What is my transgression? What is my sin, that you have pursued me? 37 For you have felt about all my goods, what have you found of all the goods of your household? Set it here, in the presence of my brothers and your brothers, and let them decide between the two of us.

Page 55: Vayetze

Vayetze 6th Aliyah (Gen 31)38 “Already twenty years have I been with you, and your ewes and female goats have not miscarried, neither have I eaten the rams of your flocks. 39 I have not brought home to you anything torn by other beasts; I would suffer its loss; from my hand you would demand it, what was stolen by day and what was stolen at night. 40 I was in the field by day when the heat consumed me, and the frost at night, and my sleep fled from my eyes.

Page 56: Vayetze

Vayetze 6th Aliyah (Gen 31)41 This is twenty years that I have spent in your house. I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flocks, and you changed my wages ten times. 42 Had not the Elohim of my father, the Elohim of Avraham and the Fear of Yitz’chak, been for me, you would now have sent me away empty handed. Elohim has seen my affliction and the labour of my hands, and he rebuked you last night.”

Page 57: Vayetze

Vayetze 7th Aliyah (Gen 31)43 Lavan answered and said to Ya‘akov, “These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and this flock is my flock, and all that you see is mine. But what can I do today to these my daughters or to their children whom they have borne? 44 So now, come, let us make a covenant, you and I, and may he be a witness between you and me.”45 So Ya‘akov took a stone and set it up as a column.

Page 58: Vayetze

Vayetze 7th Aliyah (Gen 31)

46 And Ya‘akov said to his kinsmen, “Gather stones.” And they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there on the heap.

Page 59: Vayetze

Vayetze 7th Aliyah (Gen 31)47 And Lavan called it Y’gar-Sahaduta [“heap of witness” in Aramaic], but Ya‘akov called it Gal-‘Ed [“heap of witness” in Hebrew].48 And Lavan said, “This heap is a witness between you and me today." Therefore its name was called Gal-‘Ed. 49 And also HaMitzpah [the watchtower], because he said, “May יהוה watch between you and me when we are hidden from each other.

Page 60: Vayetze

Vayetze 7th Aliyah (Gen 31)

50 If you afflict my daughters or if you take other wives in addition to my daughters when no one is with us, behold! Elohim is a witness between you and me.”51 And Lavan said to Ya‘akov, “Behold this heap and behold this column, which I have placed between you and me.

Page 61: Vayetze

Vayetze 7th Aliyah (Gen 31)52 This heap be witness, and this column be witness, that I will not pass this heap to go to you and that you will not pass this heap and this column to come to me to do harm. 53 May the Elohim of Avraham and the Elohim of Nachor judge between us, the Elohim of their father.”And Ya‘akov swore by the Fear of his father Yitz’chak.

Page 62: Vayetze

Vayetze 7th Aliyah-Maftir (Gen 31-32)

54 And Ya‘akov brought an offering on the mountain, and he called his brothers to eat bread. And they ate bread and lodged on the mountain.1 And Lavan arose early in the morning and kissed his sons and daughters and blessed them. And Lavan left and returned to his place.

Page 63: Vayetze

Vayetze Maftir (Gen 32)

2 And Ya‘akov went on his way, and messengers of Elohim met him. 3 And Ya‘akov said when he saw them, “This is the camp of Elohim.” And he called the place Machanayim [two camps].
