The Chevette was a huge investment forGM in Brazil, the number of employees atthe São José dos Campos plantincreased from 3000 to 8000. TheChevette became an agent of economicdevelopment with new auto partssuppliers, an increase in the number ofChevrolet dealers and associatedindustries being established. It wasknown within GM Brazil as the "anti-Beetle" and it was named Brazil Car ofthe Year in 1973 and became a top sellerin 1974. This model is now known as theSeries I. The one model one trim policycontinued until the middle of 1975 withthe introduction of the higher powered

Envemo models which also featured additional trim and equipment. Late in 1975,for the 1976 model year, saw the launch of the visually striking Chevette GP modelto celebrate the Brazillian Formula 1 race. At the same time the SL version wasadded to the range with additional chrome trim and equipment. The last new modelof the Series I Chevette was launched in 1977 and called the GPII which was anuprated version of the first GP with different camshaft, carburettor and distributorbut to meet emission regulations not for increased performance.

CHEVROLET CHEVETTE SERIES IV:For the 1988 model year the Chevrolet Chevette received another facelift, this time itwas only minor exterior modifications and some trim enhancements. The Hatchversion was dropped from the Chevette range. The 5 speed gearbox wasstandardized across all models and in the saloon there was an Isuzu diesel engineavailable, the 1.4litre base engine was dropped. The diesel only lasted until themiddle of 1988 and was not popular. The Marajo Estate version was withdrawn atthe end of the 1989 model year production run. The main exterior difference was anew grille, this time with the Chevrolet logo in the centre, and a modified lowerfront valence beneath the bumper. Launched late in 1991 for the 1992 model yearwas a new basic version of the Chevette called Junior. The car featured a 1.0litreengine from Opel and 4 or 5 speed gearbox. At the same time the 1.6 was availableas a petrol Standard or "DL" model or 1.6 acool and 1.6 Automatic. For 1993 onlythe Junior and a new L model were available, this would be last year of theChevette saloons. The pick up lasted until 1995.

GM BRAZIL CHEVETTE CONCEPT CARS:

It is often assumed, wrongly, that GM Brazil just assembled what everybody else inGeneral Motors designed for them. In fact GMB had it's own design studio back inthe late 1960s and opened it's own test facility at Cruz Alta in 1974. GMB hadshown two concepts in 1972, the Chevrolet Opala Las Vegas and the Opala Aguia, but the first Chevette concept was shown at the 1974 Sao Paulo Motor Show andwas called the Chevrolet Monza, a name that would later be applied to the J Car inBrazil. The car featured a larger grille above and below the bumper, larger wheelarches that looked a bit odd because the wheels and tyres were not really bigenough, blacked out window frames and a rear boot spoiler. It looked pretty goodbut still had the 1.4litre engine (with twin Dell' Orto carburettors)

Page 12: Vauxhall t car aka chevrolet chevette brazil

THE CHEVETTE BASED CHEVROLET MONZA CONCEPT AT THE 1974 SAO PAULO MOTOR SHOW

The next T Car based concept was unveiled at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in 1978,the Chevette S/R was another sporting proposal by GMB's Design studio to replacethe Chevette GP. The concept featured a graduated paint effect, new wheels andbumpers, front and rear spoilers, side skirts, new hood with power dome, coveredheadlights and sunroof. Inside there were full instrumentation and seat covers inbright tartan cloth (I wonder where that idea came from?) The front end style isalmost identical to that of the Chevrolet Electrovette show car in the US builtaround the same time.
