About Our Auctioneer
LAURA MICHALEK Fundraising Auctioneer Laura Michalek still relies on the endurance and discipline she possessed when at the age of 15, she was the first female winner of the Chicago Marathon. While Ms. Michalek has hardly missed a day of running since then, it’s this intention to excel at what she loves that is most evident. “To me Auctioneering is about giving a lot of yourself, before and during the event, in a way that most folks wouldn’t expect.”
Her style, fundraising insight, and commitment to her clients and their mission not only sets her apart, but has created a career beyond Ms. Michalek’s wildest dreams. “I’ve always been deeply interested in how non-profits I care about are going to sustain themselves, so it is nothing less than a thrill to know I can personally and professionally be part of that.”
For 15 years prior to becoming a full-time fundraising professional, Ms. Michalek owned and operated several nationally recognized vintage modern furniture stores in Seattle. “My critical eye, intuition, and energy level has been pretty consistent all these years, so whenever I set out to do something, it’s the same set of skills, just a slightly more developed new chapter.”
As the youngest winner in the history of the Chicago Marathon, it has not been lost on Ms. Michalek that this experience informed her whole life. “When I start auc-tioneering, it’s like being in the starting block all over again and I still set out to win, however this time it’s for the organization I’m representing.”
To hear what folks are saying about Ms. Michalek, visit www.lauramichalek.com or email [email protected]

The Spaciest Fur Ball™ Ever
Vashon Island Pet Protectors | www.vipp.org
A BIT ABOUT VIPPVashon Island Pet Protectors was established in 1984 to improve the quality of life for domestic pets on Vashon. Affectionately known as “VIPP,” Vashon Island Pet Protectors is a non-profit 501(c)(3) animal rescue organization run by compassionate, animal-loving volunteers which provides the means for people and animals to make a connection on Vashon Island.
VIPP furnishes shelter, food, and medical care to lost, abandoned, and relinquished dogs and cats who are awaiting loving, forever homes. VIPP is proud to be a no-kill organization. No dog or cat is ever euthanized except on recommendation of a veterinarian to spare it further suffering. Our many dedicated foster families and volunteers make this enviable record possible; we could not do it without them. VIPP’s long-term mission is to ensure that there will be no homeless dogs or cats on Vashon. A major step in reaching this goal is our adoption center for cats. The center provides a clean, safe, loving environment for cats awaiting adoption by their new families.
All animals adopted through VIPP are spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, and vaccinated before joining their new families. VIPP is a strong advocate of spaying and neutering to ensure that no animals born on the island are unwanted or unable to be cared for. One of VIPP’s programs subsidizes the cost for those families who cannot af-ford to pay for the procedure on their own.
VIPP also runs a very effective lost and found operation to reunite lost animals with their families. Photos of found dogs and cats posted in the areas where they were found have greatly increased our return rate. Another key component of this effort is an aggressive program of microchipping pets, which will also help in the event of emergencies such as earthquake, fire, or tsunami.
All animals that we adopt to homes are microchipped.
VIPP is able to provide these and other services for the cats and dogs on Vashon because of generous supporters like you.
Thank you for helping us fulfill our mission.

ART ANIMALSCommissioned works by Local Artists.
Closes at 6:45 PM Auctioneer Time
Thank you Thorn & Blossom, two VIPP cats who love supporting the Fur Ball special art projects.
Our Animals ArtistsMary Margaret Briggs’ artwork has two distinct influences: the four years she spent living and traveling in Asia and the verdant beauty of her Vashon Island home. She creates collaged panels composed of botanical and abstract mono-types. Her career in textile design presents itself through color palettes, which evolve and change with the seasons. After creating a portfolio of related prints, she cuts them apart and recombines them into collaged compositions which have modern, graphic proportions.
Clare Dohna works with clay and cement to create mosaics. Her workshop is located here on Vashon Island in an old firehouse. She cuts out shaped tiles from slabs of clay by hand, one by one. The tiles are set onto a base with thin set mor-tar and then sanded grout is used to fill in the space behind the tiles. Her work is found both inside homes and out in the wild!
Margaret Tylczak Heffelfinger has always had a passion for comment and commentary. She was the cartoonist of her college newspaper, an award-winning advertising copywriter and newspaper columnist. After opening Silverwood Gallery in Burton in 1995 with her husband, Eric, Margaret began painting with a joyful fervor. Her inclination to editorialize found a perfect soapbox in her dog paintings, a style she calls “daug fauvism.” During the 18 years as co-owner of Silverwood, over 200 of her paintings found a home with people who embrace her dogs, cats, sheep, and an occasional horse--and the stories they tell.
Cyra Jane is a multimedia artist working out of the Beall Greenhouses on Vashon. Though her primary focus at the moment is surreal stone sculpture, she has painted her entire life and has dabbled in everything from blacksmithing to clay portraiture.

Elaine Summers began playing with mosaic art in 1999 and never stopped. Self-taught and completely hooked on the medium, she has made almost 1,000 pieces including garden art, backsplashes, fireplace facades, pizza ovens, benches, chairs, and animals--lots of animals! Her volunteer work at VIPP has grown over the years, including serving on the board of directors and organizing every year since 2009 with friend Terri Fletcher, artist decorated animals to be auctioned off at the Fur Ball. She shares her mosaic and VIPP interests with her first love, music. She is a singer songwriter and has made her own solo records as well as with long-time collaborator, husband Pete Droge. Terri Fletcher Having grown up with her mother’s painting easel planted in the center of the kitchen, art has always been at the center of Terri’s life. For nearly 35 years, she has explored the Japanese resist dying method of Shibori on fabric and paper. More recently, she has created installations integrating Shibori with materials such as wood and metal. She studied art education at the University of Cincinnati and holds an MFA in textiles from Miami University. She has shown her work nationally and internationally as part of the World Shibori Network and Yoshiko Wada features her work in the book “Memory on Cloth.”
Judy Kullman is a Vashon artist and VIPP volunteer with a day job working for Alaska Airlines. She works with many different materials including glass, beads, leather, fabric, maps, and anything she can hit with a hammer. She is especially inspired by the many Vashon artists who divide their time between making art and caring for the Island’s people and animals.
Kristen Reitz-Green spent the majority of her life working in the field of classical music performance before making a shift into the visual arts. A graduate of the Juil-liard School in New York and the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut, Kristen performed throughout the US and Europe. In 2006, she cast aside her career and French horn in search of greener pastures. She eventually took up oil painting in 2008 via a series of classes with well-known painter Pam Ingalls. Since then, Kristen pursues oil painting and the study of art with great passion.

Limited Edition Print by Margaret Tylczak
Limited edition arts proof giclée print on Somerset Velvet archival paper signed by artist. Her inclination to editorialize found a perfect soapbox in her dog paintings, a style she calls “daug fauvism.”
