SIPS—A revolution in sampleintroductionVarian’s SIPS (Sample Introduction PumpSystem) is an innovative sampleintroduction and dilution system for flameAA. Using the revolutionary SIPS, you caneliminate multiple standard preparationsand dramatically simplify over-range sample dilution.

SIPS is available in two versions— the singlepump SIPS-10 and the dual pump SIPS-20.When used with the SpectrAA flame series instruments, both systems provide:

• Multi-point calibration from a single standard

• Intelligent on-line dilution of over range samples

• Simplified operation and improvedproductivity

The dual pump SIPS-20 provides evengreater capability. When used with theSpectrAA 110/220, the SIPS-20 can:

• Automate the tedious task of flamestandard additions calibrations

• Perform on-line spiking of samples forspike recovery studies

• Add modifiers such as ionizationsuppressants on-line

The benefits of SIPS• Provides on-line multi-point calibrationfrom a single standard

• Eliminates tedious multiple standardpreparation

• Eliminates dilution errors during standardpreparation

• Provides fast on-line dilution of overrange samples with ‘Smart Rinse’ to reducememory effects

• Eliminates manual dilution and re-analysisof over-range samples

• Provides excellent dilution accuracy withless than 2% error

• Extends the linear dynamic range of flameAA, approaching that of ICP-OES

• Improves the productivity of flame AA determinations

On-line calibrationUsing SIPS, only one calibration standard isrequired. Simply define the standardconcentration and the number of calibrationpoints required. SIPS does the rest for you—automatically preparing the calibrationby diluting your standard on-line.

Fast on-line dilutionSIPS will also automatically dilute overrange samples without any operatorintervention. If any solution is over range, measurement is terminated automaticallyafter the first replicate. A ‘Smart Rinse’ isthen performed, where diluent is aspiratedto wash out the atomization system. After checking for possible contamination, the over range sample is re-measured withdilution applied. ‘Smart Rinse’ optimizesrinse times, minimizes memory effects andincreases sample throughput.

SIPS provides superbaccuracy withperformance exceedingthat achieved usingmanual dilutions.Typical dilutionperformance across thedilution range is shown.

Constant Temperature Zone designVarian’s furnace research has demonstratedthat the best graphite furnace performanceis achieved using a Constant TemperatureZone (CTZ) graphite furnace. The CTZ iscreated by carefully matching the design of the GTA-110 power supply to low mass,end-heated graphite tubes. The GTA-110 also features the most advanced furnacesampling systems.

When coupled with the SpectrAA series,Varian’s longitudinally heated GTA-110 CTZgraphite furnace provides a fully automatedsystem capable of tackling difficult samplesand achieving exceptional performance.

Benefits of the CTZ designThe proof of Varian’s CTZ is performance.Varian’s CTZ design GTA-110 graphitefurnace provides:

• Rapid, even heating of the low mass, end heated graphite tubes

• High sensitivity, from the long atom celland CTZ design, ensures the lowest possibledetection limits

• Reduced memory effects, even for thedifficult refractory elements

• Accurate and reproducible temperaturecontrol, achieved using our patentedDynamic Feedback Temperature Control system

• Optimized inert gas flows ensure extended graphite tube lifetimes areachieved, providing economical operation.

Using Varian’s GTA-110, typical tubelifetimes easily exceed 1000 firings, even for the difficultrefractory elements.

Whether you are using flame, furnace orvapor AA, Varian’s range of UltrAA lampsincrease sensitivity and reduce detectionlimits, allowing determinations of tracemetals at even lower levels. The UltrAA lampseries of high intensity, boosted discharge, hollow cathode lamps can be used with allSpectrAA series instruments, for the mostdemanding applications.

Lamp operationUltrAA lamps use the standard lamp current, but apply a second discharge within the lamp. This boost current issupplied from an external control module. The resulting sharper emission profilereduces self-absorption and line broadening, increasing sensitivity of AA determinationsby up to 40%. Emission intensity is alsoincreased by three to five times, reducingbaseline noise levels. The lower baselinenoise levels and the higher sensitivity ensurelower detection limits can be achieved.

Benefits of the UltrAA lamp• Increased sensitivity—comparative signals for a 75 µg/L Se standard are shown(in the graph opposite)

• Lower detection limits

• Enhanced calibration linearity

• Longer lamp lifetimes—typical lamplifetimes exceed 8000 mA hours of operation

• Simple installation—lamps are mounteddirectly into the socket (without any flyingleads), just like conventional lamps

• A fixed boost current eliminates difficultmanual adjustments

• Automatic lamp recognition enables thesoftware to identify the lamp and select therecommended operating conditions

• Enables simultaneous operation of twoUltrAA lamps—one lamp can be in use whilethe other is being pre-warmed

High productivity vapor generation

High sample throughputVarian’s fully automated, modular VGA-77(Vapor Generation Accessory) is ideal forrapid trace level analyses of mercury (usingthe proven cold vapor technique) and otherhydride forming elements at part per billion(µg/L) concentrations. The VGA-77 offers:

• Maximum sensitivity

• High sample throughput of up to 70 samples per hour

• Excellent precision of 1-2% RSD

• Low sample consumption of less than 8 mL per element during analysis

• Modular construction for rapidchangeover and reduced contaminationwhen switching between elements withconflicting chemistries

Advantages of Continuous Flow Vapor GenerationThe continuous flow VGA-77 offers thefollowing advantages over competitivetechniques, such as Flow Injection:

• Maximum sensitivity

• Enhanced precision—the VGA-77 producesa steady state signal, which can bemeasured using integration. Flow Injectionproduces transient signals, requiringmultiple injections for precise results.

The ETC-60 enhancesproductivity of hydridegeneration AA byproviding unattended, flameless atomization ofthe hydride elements.

• Greater productivity—results are obtainedusing the VGA-77 in less than a minute

• Simple and automatic operation—eachsample is automatically combined with acontinuous flow of acid and reagents

Unattended hydride analysisFor even greater productivity, or increasedsensitivity from the vapor technique, combine the VGA-77 with Varian’s SPS-5autosampler and ETC-60 ElectrothermalTemperature Controller. The ETC-60 is anelectrically heated quartz cell, whicheliminates flame heating of the atomizationcell, enabling safe, unattended, flamelesshydride analyses.

The lower atomization temperatures usedwith the ETC-60 (typically <1000 ˚C)increase sensitivity by up to 30%, ensuringsub µg/L detection limits are achieved.
