The Client/Design team discover the needs of the user. This investigation is the foundation of Studio. Without a clear understanding of user needs, a physical solution is impossible.

Development of the solution is both the most frustrating and the most fun. Collaboration, ideation, sketching, rendering and prototyping are at the center of the development process. This process is give-and-take and very iterative.

From Design to Engineering to Manufacturing/Sourcing and Delivering the specific solution—this phase is about living up to commitments and dates. Our engineering and manufacturing team conforms to all industry standards when meeting these dates.

Development of the solution is give-and-take and very iterative.

Seek inspiration from everyday activities • Invite curiosity • Tap resources • Reveal what is intuitive • Uncover the emotional experience.

Product designs and revisions are made until details reflect the needs. Material considerations such as sustainability, durability and feasibility, are demonstrated.

Bring in designers, dealers and a team of end users to brainstorm and discuss needs. Ideas take shape as we communicate and gain a deep understanding of the project.

observe. question. record. The design process begins as designers observe users in action and question

how experiences can be improved by design. Information is recorded in videos, photographs, sketch books, reports, etc. to be revisited and communicated.

healthcare

Time is tight. Caregivers need to maximize both quality and quantity of individual interactions with patients, without appearing to rush. This means organization and efficiency are of utmost importance.

Placement of supplies should be intuitive. Flexible and mobile furniture aids in cleaning and personalization. Technology integration is huge; cabinets and mobile furniture need to be compatible with an array of computers, patient monitoring devices, bar coding tools, etc. Surfaces need to withstand heavy disinfectants and repel dust, while contributing to a comforting atmosphere.

Studio designs and manufactures furnishings for all areas of healthcare environments. We distinguish three zones that have needs unique to healthcare: Patient, Caregiver and Community.

areas within healthcare environments

Patient ZoneSpaces where patient care is provided: patient rooms, exam rooms, surgery rooms, short-stay treatment units, etc.

Using space efficiently and effectively is essential. Consistency of room design and placement of devices improves patient safety and aids in time management. Flexible furniture supports technology and responds to indi-vidual comfort preferences for patients. Proper ergonomics is important for both patients and providers. Furniture should address unique patient needs (ie. bariatric, children, etc.). Anti-microbial surfaces and mobile furniture are valuable.

Caregiver ZoneSpaces used by workers where patients and visitors generally do not go: nurses stations, pharmacies, labs, etc.

Often, a lot of action is happening in tight quarters. Security, technology integration and organization are key concerns. Ergonomics is an important consideration.

Community ZoneAll spaces shared by patients, caregivers and guests: reception areas, cafeterias, gift shops, etc.

These spaces impact first impressions. Style that reflects the personality of the organization is accomplished through design and material choices. Furniture needs to support the specific functions of the area.

The mobile storage night stand is constructed of Trespa Athlon, a material that is resistant to wear, impervious to moisture and heat resistant.

Mobile Storage for Children’s Hospital

STORYA children’s hospital was building a new facility. The architects and designers created a strong personality and design for the new construction. They were in need of a mobile cabinet that fit the hospital’s charac-ter, was appropriate for a medical environment and met all municipal regulations and codes.

SOLUTIONVanerum Studio collaborated closely with the dealer and designers to design a line of custom bedside storage cabinets. Clean lines accented the contemporary architecture of the hospital. Careful attention was taken to ensure the storage units met strict municipal building codes. More than 50 units in five configurations were supplied to the hospital with all of the products constructed of Trespa® Athlon, a solid-surface phenolic resin.

Anti-Microbial Casegoods and Tables

STORYA large ophthalmology practice approached our dealer to supply storage and tables for surgery and exam rooms. The casegoods and tables needed to be specifically geared to healthcare environments with anti-microbial surfaces and dust preventing slanted cabinet tops. Affordability and durability were very important to the customer.

SOLUTIONVanerum Studio outfitted the clinic with space-saving storage and tables. Using anti-microbial surfaces and slanted cabinet tops, “Align” modular casegoods were a perfect solution that fit the customer’s budget. Studio also provided layout and space planning drawings for all rooms, saving the dealer and designer time and money.

Pharmacy

STORYWhen a renowned teaching hospital started their planning for a new pharmacy, they took into consid-eration typical delays in construction. But when things took a turn for the worse, they found themselves in a bind. Officials informed the pharmacy that if they did not meet the city’s construction codes by a certain date, the store would not be able to open its doors. At that point, they were forced into a corner: close up shop or kick it into high gear. They turned to Vanerum Studio for help.

SOLUTION Vanerum Studio responded to the frantic time line with a complete sense of urgency. Studio was able to change this situation for the better by provid-ing space layouts and drawings. Our talented team of designers and engineers delivered an ideal plan and storage solutions that met every need expressed by the pharmacy. Acute attention to detail and open communication with the customer ensured a problem-free installation.

Vanerum “Align” modular casegoods were a perfect solution that fit the customer’s budget.

Bedside Tablewith Secure Storage

STORYA hospital was updating patient rooms and wanted to provide a place to store personal belongings at their fingertips. The vision was to have a lockable storage cabinet incorporated into the height-adjustable bedside table. Unable to find the specific product anywhere, the design firm turned to Vanerum Studio for help.

SOLUTIONVanerum Studio drew up the plans and made the idea take shape. The height-adjustable bedside table with personal storage thrilled the designer and the customer. The unit locks to provide security. Cast-ers make mobility easy and the slide out tray keeps items such as paper and pencils within the patients’ reach. Studio listened to the needs of the customer and delivered a precise solution.

Ideas evolve. Inspired by the lockable bedside table, a client needed a similar mobile table with quick-access storage.

A bedside cabinet shown in a Hospice room. Hospice rooms offer a cottage-style atmosphere featuring bright colors and light wood-tones.

A small round arch X-base table is used as a side table in patient rooms.

The private kitchenettes give Hospice residents and visitors a cozy place to share a meal.

Each patient has access to a personal wardrobe. Long-term and short-term care rooms feature cherry laminate.

Vanerum tables are found throughout the facility. Here an X-base is placed in a social lounge where residents can play games.

Care Center

STORYA long-term/short-term care facility was relocating to a brand new building and expanding. Located in a natural setting surrounded by sand dunes, the facility creates a home-like atmosphere with a touch of beach cottage appeal. Healthcare furnishings were needed that reflect the cozy home atmosphere and hit the right price points.

SOLUTIONWe responded by offering a variety of solutions for patient rooms and lounge areas. Vanerum•Stelter provided options for every table application in the facility. Matching wardrobes and night stands were the perfect choice for patient room storage.

Vanerum Studio tables were made the standard for the project and many were purchased. Patient room furnishings specified also included custom wardrobe and bedside cabinets. The customer and dealer were impressed and pleased with the quality of the products and service. Installation was 100% on time.

Elegant Nurses’ Station

STORYOur dealer was approached by a large oncology center to design an elegant nurses’ station that would blend with their interior environment. The customer required a multi-level work space that would ensure privacy. Quick access to storage and plenty of room to move around were also needed.

SOLUTIONVanerum Studio designed a perfect solution that fit the customer’s budget. Dark wood texture laminate was paired with solid gray to blend with the center’s architecture. The form of the large work station wraps around to close off the space, ensuring privacy. The size provided enough room for multiple caregivers to work at the desk simultaneously. The configuration and ample storage was well-planned for efficient organization.

Mobile Utility Cart

STORYA national hospital turned to Vanerum Studio to create a mobile cart that features portable workspace and secure storage. The cart was intended for caregivers to use inside patient rooms to store supplies. A flip-up shelf was desired to provide a handy worksurface without adding to the size of the compact cart.

SOLUTIONStudio collaborated with the designer through three iterations of the utility cart before a final decision was made. The process helped the customer to understand and communicate their precise needs. The approved product was compact and mobile, featuring a locking drawer with adjustable dividers, a flip up shelf, and plenty of surface space for wireless computer devices.

Mobile Technology and Storage Cabinet

STORYStudio has been collaborating with the dealer and customer since construction started for a new hospital. In the beginning, the customer wanted a small utility cart that blended with patient room furnishings to create a homey atmosphere. Over time, new needs were uncovered and a series of iterations have been created. What was once a simple storage cabinet has evolved into a mobile cart that holds specific technology devices and supplies.

SOLUTIONThe Studio Process helped the customer understand their needs and to maximize function of the patient room cart through seeing multiple iterations. The final version is designed to store specific devices and hold patient monitoring devices and computer equipment. A pullout shelf was incorporated for extra work space. The mobile cart was placed in every patient room of the hospital. Additionally, the cart was ordered for an auxiliary facility.

The original mock up was designed to fit underneath the counter top.

Table with Privacy Screens

STORYOur dealer was approached by a plasma center to build a table in the designer’s vision. The table featured privacy panels with laser cut metal and 3form inlays. The custom shape work surfaces were designed to fit around columns in the architecture. The designer was challenged with finding a source to build the table.

SOLUTIONA Vanerum Studio representative walked in the door at the right time. After participating in a presentation about Studio, the designer was ecstatic. Finally a solution for the plasma center tables was brought to light. Studio engineered and manufactured the solution under a tight time line and delighted the customer, dealer and designer.

healthcare

Phlebotomy Chair

STORYThe customer was working with a dealer to find a practical yet attractive option for a phlebotomy chair. The dealer saw the Monomax desk from Vanerum in a presentation by a Vanerum Studio representative. The dealer was inspired by the look and function of Monomax and inquired about making adaptations to the student desk to create a phlebotomy chair.

SOLUTIONVanerum Studio responded by turning around a mock-up for the dealer and customer in a week and a half. The solution was EXACTLY what the customer was asking for, with only minor aesthetic modifica-tions required. Not only did the customer love the product, but the mock up secured the project for the dealer as well. We have received the order for the first phase of 474 pieces.

Inspired by Monomax by Vanerum, our dealer approached us to develop a new phlebotomy chair for a medical facility.

Early prototypes of our phlebotomy chair helped us to develop precisely the right product.

The surface of our phlebotomy chair rotates 180 degrees, ensuring an easy entrance and exit for patients. Also, the closed position securely protects the patient from falling.

work

Driven by technology, a tough economy and globalization, workflow is aggressive and competitive. Work environments need the flexibility to respond to needs of individuals who are required to wear multiple hats; there is a place to be a creative thinker, an analytical planner and, last but not least, a productive doer.

Collaboration of all sorts is a tool for success, whether it is in a formal board room or casual touch down space. Utilizing technology allows businesses to connect with people across the globe and productivity happens around the clock.

Workers are empowered and dedicated to their jobs. As people spend more time at work, they seek personalization and ownership within their work environments.

Studio designs and manufactures furnishings for all areas of work environments. We distinguish three zones that respond to unique needs throughout workplaces: Individual, Collaborative and In-Between.

20

areas within work environments

Individual ZoneSpaces to focus, and get things done: Personal offices, cubicles and desks

This space needs to be driven by attention to details, from the amount of storage a worker needs to the shape of the desk and even the materials used; by creating a space that works with the individual you are creating a more efficient employee. This area should be a private retreat that can be personalized but still give a cohesive look throughout the office. Furniture should encourage proper ergonomics and technology integration.

Collaborative ZoneSpaces to connect with peers and exchange information: Board rooms, meeting areas and think pods.

The collaborative zone is the heart of any business. Workspaces need to be flexible and accommodate a wide range of people, who work and think in different ways. These areas need to create and foster the dynamic exchange of ideas and promote dialogue. Typically used for brainstorming sessions, decision-making and socializing, the collaborative zone needs to empower individuals to focus and get things done together. From small team zones to large corporate boardrooms the collaborative zone drives innovation and problem solving in any business environment.

In-Between ZoneCentral hubs for information and team building: Kitchens/eating areas, social gathering spaces, etc.

These are the places where friendships are made and trust is built. The in-between zone is where employees can gather for celebrations or escape if they need to regroup their thoughts. Creating welcoming and inventive spaces for workers not only leaves a great impression but reflects the personality of the company. This is achieved through material choices and effective layouts. These rooms should inspire workers and even more importantly, turn your employees into a family.

Laminate Tower and Credenza

STORYA television network wanted to increase communi-cation and collaboration throughout their offices. Incorporating an upholstered bench atop a lateral file into each workstation would provide a casual touch-down space. They also wanted a specific storage tower. The tower needed to be one single unit with a wardrobe off the back and side shelving.

SOLUTIONOur Studio design team quickly responded by taking their initial sketches and bringing them to life. Within a week and a half we had a complete mock up in their hands, with only a few minor aesthetic modifications. The finished product worked beautifully with their existing environment and was exactly what they wanted.

Products designed to seamlessly integrate into existing installations or products specified by other manufacturers.

Sustainable Workstation

STORYAn international A+D firm was remodeling their office with sustainable furnishings. They needed products that had custom dimensions and finishes. The A+D firm wanted to encourage open communication. They had specific finishes in mind: a brown Wilsonart laminate for lower case goods units and a glossy white on the upper cabinet to use as a marker board.

SOLUTIONVanerum Studio used Content Furniture as the foundation. The furniture uses sustainable Skyblend cores that contains water-based glues with ABS work-surface edges to lower the formaldehyde emissions, promoting clean air. The laminates for all surfaces and storage units were Greenguard Certified. Studio’s ability to provide custom finishes solved the unique needs of the A+D firm.

Creative Screen Space

STORYA large technology company was seeking a custom, flexible solution for space division. They needed division between individual work areas as well as vertical surface for creative display. In addition, the customer was also looking to simplify their buying process by working with just a few partners.

SOLUTIONThe Vanerum Studio design team got to work quickly developing drawings and renderings of custom screens. A mock-up was created and delivered within just three weeks. The screens consisted of three different materials, metal, marker board and glass, secured by a slim metal frame. The base fits snugly around an existing panel, and a well placed caster provided the mobility needed within the work space. The customer was extremely satisfied with the solution. The mock up secured the deal and confirmed that Studio was the right team for the job.

Various screen styles were created to fulfill specific functions. The semi-mobile screen serves as a divider between workstations. The mobile screen functions as a shared collaborative writing surface or can be used for additional privacy.

Retail Sales Floor: High Density Mobile Shelving

STORYA major retail clothing store needed a very specific storage solution. They were concerned that their cus-tomers were not able to find clothing sizes, especially during busy rushes. They also wanted to reduce back room inventory.

SOLUTIONVanerum Studio and the client worked together to create an exciting storage rack. Through collabora-tion and custom renderings, the “jeans bar” came to life: large mobile storage units that help customers to easily find their size of jeans. The custom end panels are chalkboards that can showcase special promo-tions. The solution also reduced the storage space needed in the back room, leading to more efficient use of space in every part of the store. On top of answering these specific needs, Vanerum•Stelter also provided personalized project management, instal-lation schedules, quick response solutions and installa-tion specialists to ensure the project’s success.

education

Educational facilities are more than places to learn, they are centers for interaction and socialization. Today the classroom stretches far beyond four walls. Technology is making learning and accessing information easier, no matter where you are. This means classrooms should be flexible by design.

Flexible and mobile furniture allows for collaboration and reconfiguration, because no two teachers instruct the same way—just as no two students learn the same way. Tech carts and desks need to be compatible with emerging technologies; chairs need to be easily adjustable to fit a variety of students. Surfaces need to be durable, furniture needs to have proper glides to reduce damage to floors and everything needs to be lightweight to make for easy cleaning and movement.

Studio Design creates custom solutions to fit into your bud-get, and your space. Specializing in Primary/Secondary and Higher Education, our team understands the needs of diverse educational facilities. We even provide layout and project management assistance. We recognize four zones that have needs unique to education: Instructor, Student, Wall and Distributed.

32

Page 33: VANERUM STUDIO · is the foundation of Studio. Without a clear understanding of user needs, a physical solution is impossible. Development of the solution is both the most frustrating

areas within education environments

Student ZonePlaces used primarily by students for collaboration and individual learning in the classroom: desks, tables and chairs.

Education is less about listening to lectures and more about creating an open dialogue within the classroom. Because students are all shapes, sizes and ages, it is important to understand the various needs created by this wide range of users. Switching between individual work and collaboration is prominent in this setting, so having a flexible environment is key. Mobility, adjustability and technology integration are the cornerstones for design in this zone.

Teacher ZoneSpaces used by teachers as a meeting area, personal office and information hub: tech carts, lecterns and desks.

Supporting teachers with the proper technology, materials and supplies is crucial. From grading to prepping, this area needs to be secure and organized. The largest furniture demands are for technology integration that supports a variety of equipment.

Wall ZoneWalls are where information is presented, stored and exchanged: chalk/white boards, interactive boards, storage cabinets and modular casegoods.

Furniture needs to support technology and provide functional and flexible storage solutions for each unique room. Put cabinets on wheels so you can rearrange and create different divisions of space throughout the classroom. Modular furniture can be moved to different rooms to accommodate chang-ing needs of schools.

Distributed ZoneAll areas of the school, outside the classroom. Learning also takes place in: art rooms, science labs, auditoriums, study areas, media centers, cafeterias, teacher lounges, offices, etc.

The Distributed Zone embraces the social side of learning. These areas are where people research, study, take breaks and laugh and eat. Furniture needs to support an unlimited number of functions, technology, comfort, and the right aesthetic.

Teacher’s Desk

STORYA large school district in central Ohio sought a teacher desk that had very specific qualities. Their first request was that they fostered collaboration between teachers and students. Teachers needed to have enough room to meet with students, while keeping their computer screen out of view to protect the privacy of others. The desk also needed to man-age an extensive amount of wires.

SOLUTIONVanerum Studio began development of the desk with a collaborative web conference. The school district, dealer and design firm virtu-ally met with our Studio team to develop the ideal teacher desk to fit their requirements. Three options were presented to the customer, all of which were designed around their specifications. A mock up of their favorite design was ordered. The district approved the mock-up and placed the order. The laminate desk included full wire management, a top shelf book rack, peninsula work surface, pedestal and bookshelf.

Toledo Library

STORYThe customer approached our dealer with the need to create an updated contemporary, fun library/media center that integrated into their existing facility and architecture. They turned to Vanerum Studio for a large circulation desk built around large pillars, standing height tables, computer stations that wrap around circular lounge furniture and tech carts.

SOLUTIONVanerum Studio worked with the designers on the project to create an environment that incorporated technology, provided stimulating areas for studying and reading, and used bright, uplifting colors. Curved structures were created that served a dual purpose— one side provided seating areas for computers while the back side provided soft seating for more relaxed situations. Corian surfaces were used to accent the circulation desk. Existing columns were surrounded by larger surfaces to provide extra working room. The media center is truly a fun, interactive and functional space.

Resource Center

STORYA national university has forged a partnership with Vanerum Studio to rebrand their educational institution through the look and feel of furniture of their campuses. University designers and Studio came together to develop resource center and reception furniture to be incorporated in the layout of numerous nationwide locations.

SOLUTIONThrough collaborative calls and meetings, Vanerum Studio made engineering modifications and improvements to the designs of tech stations, reception desks, bookshelves and computer bars. Materials used: laminate, Corian, custom lighting and special wire management components. The joint designs were put in five test facilities and eventually became a standard for the nationwide university. Together, the university and Vanerum created a design with professional, modern, and streamlined elements that integrate technology and inspire learning.

Innovative School District

STORYA school system was building three brand new schools: elementary, middle and high school. The school system sought new ideas and responses for education environ-ments. Vanerum Studio was an ideal partner for the project. Our corporate philosophy of interactive, integrated and inspiring learning environments (ie) aligned with the school’s perspective.

SOLUTIONWe began the project with an intense, three hour brainstorm that involved the designer, school decision makers, the dealer and Vanerum Studio. It was an exciting exchange of ideas as we defined needs and presented various solutions. Together we created a new chair: the school loved the Optimax desk; an administrator from the school saw a Soliwood shell and wanted it on the Optimax chair base. Studio designed a custom tech cart that complimented the Optimax classrooms. The designer relied heavily on Studio to manage the project; Studio provided all the layouts for the massive multi school project, including multiple revisions.

Classroom Display

STORYA medium size school district in the Midwest was renovating nearly 500 classrooms. The main focus of the renovations was to upgrade technology. The school, technology value added re-seller, design firm and the dealer approached Vanerum Studio with the need to develop a flexible solution that accommodated an interactive board or large monitor and white boards.

SOLUTIONVanerum Studio collaborated with the project team to understand their needs. Studio developed several options for the visual display unit that incorpo-rated an interactive monitor (fixed) as well as a height adjustable marker board. The solution met all of the necessary ADA size requirements, and the thin 11” deep profile is appropriate for renovations and new construction. The project team was impressed with Studio’s quick response.

The final product successfully incorporates two drafting stations, while also becoming a beautiful showcase furnishing.

Dual Drafting Table

STORYWith a design in mind, an east coast education pro-gram approached our dealer for a two-person drafting table that had drawers that locked separately. They wanted to be space efficient, yet required a clean look and feel.

SOLUTIONVanerum Studio listened to the specific needs and responded with a dual drafting table that fit the bill. The final result was a veneer two-person drafting table with five separately locking drawers. A brushed metal footrest provided ergonomic support and en-hanced the classic design.

3form power hub table has a unique shape that maximizes personal space for each user.

Innovative Media CenterSTORYA breathtaking university library needed a media center with a modern look, plenty of power and tons of workspace. The university had a design firm design the collection of powered tables but needed a manu-facturer that could deliver on time and on budget.

SOLUTIONVanerum Studio took the design firm’s drawings and specs and engineered the collec-tion. We manufactured the extra large tables made of 3form and veneer. Two drum base tables were designed to hide wires and provide power for every user. One table featured a serpentine worksurface, the other was an amoeba shape. An ADA, height adjust-able table incorporated a lamp and power outlets.

Tech Carts

STORYAs instructors are pushed to teach with new technologies, accessing information digitally and on the web is increasingly important. With so many different ways to integrate technology in the classroom, Vanerum Studio is experiencing a strong trend of schools seeking custom tech carts that answer their unique needs.

SOLUTIONStudio works one-on-one with your team to create the perfect tech cart solution. From storage, security, tech integration, mobility, materials, sizing and work surface shapes, our designers have the experience and knowledge to help guide the design process.

Art College Living Center

STORY An art college was building a new dorm. Administra-tors from the school wanted to ensure that the new dorm would facilitate art students so they held a forum to detect their unique needs. Vanerum Studio along with several dealers and manufactur-ers were invited to the event. We learned that when it comes to art students, every surface is a work surface. Sometimes projects are so big that they need to be spread out everywhere! So plenty of spacious work areas were needed. Art students are also design savvy and want to be surrounded by furniture that inspires them.

SOLUTIONStudio attacked the challenge with vigor and created pieces that contribute to a fun environment with plenty of space to work. The extra twist was Studio created pieces that were re-configurable. The bed could be set up in four configurations. Storage cube end tables could be flipped and turned for a new look. The cut-ting mat coffee table gave students a durable place to do project work.

Full room renderings show the various bed configurations.

Municipal Library

STORYA municipal library was renovating and gave the librarians authority over the design. They worked with a dealer to find the right furnishings. They needed to have mobile book display units with a small footprint. A large magazine display was needed for the children’s section. Computer kiosks that matched the book display tables were also needed.

SOLUTIONVanerum Studio participated in a collaborative brainstorm with the librarians, dealer and designer. Studio grasped the vision of the librarians and turned their ideas into a cohesive line of products. Matching book displays, computer kiosks and magazine racks provide functional design throughout the library. Stu-dio designed, manufactured and installed the project on time and flawlessly.
