MEYERTON. - On Sunday March 1 SouthAfrican amputee para-triathlete, Stan An-drews, competed and placed 9th overall in the2015 Buffalo City ITU World ParatriathlonEvent.

The event hosted a total of 39 top male andfemale international para-triathletes in all fivecategories. The men’s PT4 category held thefiercest competition with 16 entrants (six ofwhom were South Africans) of the total 39entrants taking part in this category.

Andrews reported the swim to be toughwith a heavy side-current that affected all thecompetitors equally. Entrants were given theopportunity to make use of a ‘pre-transition’,where athletes areable to remove theirwetsuits and put ontheir prostheses in anarea near the water.Despite having com-peted in many othertriathlons, the ‘pre-transition’ was a firstfor Andrews, whofelt that it cost himvaluable seconds,causing his Transi-tion 1 time to be 30seconds slower thanin previous events.

The bike coursewent well for An-drews, who feels thatcycling is his weak-est discipline of thetriathlon event. Thewind played into hishands and helped hisclimb back up the ex-press-way, leavinghim ready to jump in-to Transition 2 after

two loops.The run was challenging for Andrews who,

after overtaking fellow South African com-petitor Nico Nel was in 10th place 28 secondsbehind Spaniard Rafael Solis Torres.

Ultimately, Andrews placed 9th out of thefield due to the disqualification of a fellowcompetitor, the reason for which is unknown,and was the first South African to finish.

In nineweeks’ time,Andrewswill competein Egypt with the goal of scoring enoughpoints to compete in theGrand Final in Chica-go, USA.

Stan wishes to thank all those whose con-tributions made this weekend a success,

namely TSA and Buffalo City, as well as Bio-gen and NoExcuses, who contributed to thecost of the trip.

* Stan grew up in Meyerton, attendedschool at Meyerton Primary and then GeneralSmuts High. He now resides in Roodepoort.The Midvaal municipality will be hosting a5km fun walk on March 21 in Meyerton andthe beneficiary of the walk will be Standwith-Stan, a non profit organisation he founded in2013. StandwithStan provides disadvantagedamputees with prosthetics, mentoring andmaintenance of the prosthetic in order for theamputee to regain mobility and a high qualityof life.
