By George Christopher Thomas, Travel Writer & Food Critic ASHLAND, OREGON — When I think of a great American town, and everything that comes with it, I always think of Ashland, Oregon. This is the place to go for a family vacation, to get away from it all, and to get your fair share of Shakespeare. My family and I recently went on vacation in Ashland, Oregon, and had the most wonderful time. The town could be anywhere in the USA, but it happens to be in Southern Oregon just off the 5 freeway. There is just something about Oregon for me, maybe it’s because my dad used to sell lumber, maybe it’s because we went to Oregon every summer when I was a kid, or maybe it is just because it is a great place to stay and play. As a kid, I remember golfing, fishing, canoeing, horse-back riding, and playing ping pong, and that was all on the first day. There are activities galore in Ashland, and when we arrived for our family vacation, the first thing I wanted to do was chop some wood. However, we were staying at the really nice “Cowslips Belle Bed & Breakfast” and there was no need for me to make some kindling out of some blocks of wood. The Cowslips Belle is one of Ashland’s original bed and breakfasts, and has even expanded their business into vacation rentals. The accommodations are quite luxurious and fancy, and they did not miss one beat taking care of us. After we checked ourselves in, there was wine in our room waiting for us, as well as a personal note welcoming us to this fine establishment. With such hospitality, and a general feeling of home, I proceeded to challenge both mom and dad to gin rummy. After I dominated the older folks in such a cerebral game, I posed the question if slapjack or go fish might be better suited for them. The gardens at the Cowslips Belle are beautiful, and they even have a koi pond. The atmosphere lends itself to relaxing, and perhaps reading some Shakespeare. That is one of the big draws for Ashland; they have an ongoing Shakespeare Festival that rivals even plays put on in Stratford upon Avon. (Continued on page 7) OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN TOPANGA SAN FERNANDO VALLEY, CA -- On May 5, 2013, around 5:35 a.m., uniforms officers from Topanga Patrol Division responded to a call for service of a prowler in the 7100 block of Woodlake Avenue. The officers observed the suspect pounding on the apartment door on the third floor land- ing. The officers made contact with the suspect. The suspect, later identified as Corey Frisch, turned suddenly and fired one round from a handgun at the officers. An Officer Involved Shooting occurred when the officers returned fire and struck Frisch. Frisch fell to the ground and was taken into custody. A .357 Magnum revolver was recovered from the scene. The Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance responded and transported Frisch for medi- cal treatment. The involved officers were not injured. Force Investigation Division detectives responded and are investigating the OIS. The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, Office of the In- spector General and the Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the De- partment’s use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer- involved shooting. ONE DEAD AND SEVERAL INJURED IN THREE-CAR COLLISION NORTHRIDGE, CA — Los Angeles Police Department Valley Traffic Division (VTD) detectives are investigating a serious traffic collision in which one driver was killed and several other people were injured. Last Thursday, about 1:25 a.m., a gray 2001 Nissan Pathfinder and a blue 2005 Mercedes Kompressor were traveling eastbound on Roscoe Boulevard when a burgundy 1997 Pontiac Bonneville pulled out from the south curb of Roscoe Boulevard and turned into traffic. To avoid the Pontiac, the Mercedes swerved and collided with the Pathfinder, causing it to overturn. The Mercedes then continued eastbound and collided with the left side of the Pontiac. The driver, front passenger, and child in the Pontiac were seriously injured and taken to a local hospital where the driver, a Granada Hills resident, was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released, pending notification of family members. The Pathfinder driver, a Winnetka resident, suffered minor injuries, but the Reseda resident driving the Mercedes was seriously hurt. Both were transported to local hospitals.

stop the sea otter slaughterAlaska’s curious and charming sea otters are finally on the path to recovery after be-ing pushed to the brink of extinction by over-hunting. Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, Alaska Na-tive hunters alone are allowed to kill sea otters -- and they can only do so to create “authentic native handicrafts.”Unfortunately those protections could be weakened if the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service collapses under the greedy pressures of the commer-cial fishing industry -- rules may be expanded to include nearly unaltered sea otter pelts under the “handicrafts” definition.Sea otters play an important role in Alaska’s coastal ecosystems by encouraging the growth of kelp beds, which serve as nurseries for fish and create important carbon dioxide sinks. But sea otters also eat some species that are targeted by commercial fishers, so the fishing industry is pushing to control sea otter populations. Please take action now to tell the Fish and Wildlife Service to protect Alaska’s sea otters.

IndIa: take VIolenCe agaInst Women serIouslyThe rape of a five-year-old in Delhi has sparked new protests in India demanding more action from the government to curb the nation’s rape epidemic. Allegedly, local police refused to help find the missing child, who was left for dead for 48 hours after her assault.India has done a lot of soul searching in the wake of a horrible rape and murder last December that exposed a national, pervasive problem with sexual assault against women. The country recently passed new, harsher

punishments for rapists, including 20-year mandatory minimum sentences and the death penalty for repeated offenders and in cases where the victim dies. But the recent tragic case in Delhi shows that these punishments aren’t enough. Women’s advocates and analysts warn that unless police culture is changed to take violence against women seriously, the assaults will continue.

The Road Theatre Company will be presenting “Cooperstown.” It is the summer of 1962, and Jackie Robinson is about to be the first black player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. This has a big impact on Junior Murphy, a black diner employee who can’t get a promotion, and whose little sister has her own history-making plans for the weekend. Enter a Midwest minor-leaguer who has come to Cooperstown chasing his idol and you have a collision of race, family, love, and baseball turning

a normally quiet New York town upside down.“Cooperstown” opens May 17 and runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm. For details about tickets call (866) 506-1248 or go to www.RoadTheatre.org. The Road on Magnolia is located at 10747 Magnolia Boulevard in North Hollywood.

at the mark taper forum

Once upon a time there was an actress named Phylicia Rashad. Twenty years ago Ms. Rashad’s claim to fame was her portrayal as Clair Huxtable in the hit series “The Cosby SHow.” In the 21st century, Ms. Rashad has become a noted and acclaimed director. One does not have to look any further than the current Center Theatre Group’s presentation of acclaimed playwright August Wilson’s “Joe Turner’s Come And Gone” that is currently being performed at the Mark Taper, to see the results of her latest directing effort. She has brought out the lyrical quality of Wilson’s momentous epic. The story of “Joe Turner’s Come And Gone,” the second in a series of noted playwright August Wilson’s The Century Cycle, is set in the city of Pittsburgh in 1911 and chronicles

what happened when descendants of former slaves began moving towards the industrial cities of the North, seeking new jobs, new lives and new beginnings: Boarding house owners Seth and Bertha Holly; Bynum Walker, a freed slave from the south; Jeremy Furlow, a guitar-playing 25 year-old who came north looking for a job and a way in life; Mattie Campbell, a 25 year-old girl who is looking for love; Rueben Mercer, the Hollys’ next door neighbor and about Zonia’s age; Molly Cunningham, a young woman of 26 who is strong and independent; Rutherford Selig, a white man (the only white character in the play) who sells Seth’s goods and is known as the ‘People Finder;” and Martha Pentecost, Loomis’ wife, a member of the Evangelical church and very religious. The Joe Turner in the title refers to the brother, Joe Turney, of a Tennessee governor who liked to arrest and sentence black people for the slightest infraction and use them as members of a “chain gang” on various government (and non-government) projects for seven years.Ms. Rashad has brought out the playwright’s mixture of naturalism and symbolism and has very effectively told the story of the people who are the boarding house residents. In a May 1, 2013, interview in the Orange

County Register with Paul Hodgins, Ms. Rashad was quoted as saying “Wilson asks those great questions that have been posed by playwrights since the time of the Greeks: What is a man’s responsibility to the world, to other people, to himself? What is your duty? How far should you go with it? This play is all about the investigation of those questions. But it happens so naturally you don’t even know it.” The cast features Keith David as Seth Holly, Lillias White (Bertha), Glynn Turman (Bynum Walker), Raynor Scheine (Rutherford Selig), Gabriel Brown (Jeremy Furlow), John Douglas Thompson (Herald Loomis), Skye Barrett (Zonia Loomis), January Lavoy (Mattie Campbell), Nathaniel James Potvin (Reuben Mercer), Vivian Nixon (Molly Cunningham), Erica Tazel (Martha Pentecost). August Wilson’s “Joe Turner’s Come And Gone” will run at the Mark Taper Forum until June 9. Tickets are available by calling (213) 628-2772, online at www.Center TheatreGroup.org or in person at the Center Theatre Group box office at the Ahmanson Theatre. Tickets range from $20-$70 and are subject to change without notice. The Mark Taper Forum is located at the Music Center at 135 North Grand Avenue in Los Angeles. It’s a DON’T MISS!

the Cody moC-toe tassel Is the “shoe of the Week”

By Allen EdmondsSometimes it can be hard to reconcile the two sides of your personality. Few people did it better than A m e r i c a n l e g e n d W i l l i a m “ B u f f a l o Bill” Cody, who became f a m o u s for being a cowboy, circus entertainer and celebrity character while also making a name for himself as a decorated solider, successful businessman and historian. Most of us aren’t as busy as Mr. Cody, but we still like the idea of mixing business with pleasure, which is what this shoe does perfectly. You’ll take delight in the breathable woven plug, braided lacing and fringed kiltie, all of which will attest to your confidence and playful nature. Equally important, the distinguished tassel loafer styling coupled with the single oak leather sole speaks to your professionalism, making this a great substitute for traditional office wear, especially on Fridays or during the summer. All this makes the Cody one of our best offerings, considering you are basically getting two shoes for the price of one.“The Cody is my favorite pair of shoes. Ever. Actually, I could say the Codys are my top TWO favorite pairs — with the Chili Burnished Calfs heading the list, and the Black Custom Calfs a close second. They’re so unique and gorgeous, even strangers stop and ask me about them (especially the Chilis). They look splendid with dress and business casual clothes. And when I travel light, the tassels and weave enable them to pair admirably with jeans and a jacket. Not only are they beauties, but they also remain comfortable all day and into the night. Handsome, versatile, comfortable — what more could anyone want from a pair of shoes?” -- Scott Thornburn

C’est manIfIque and unIque -- le salon de musIques

By Theda Kleinhans ReichmanOn Sunday, May 19th at 4:00 p.m., come celebrate Le Salon de Musiques final concert of the season. As a classical music lover I can highly recommend the experience. Each concert, held on the 5th floor of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 135 N. Grand Ave. in downtown Los Angeles, has been unique and C’est Manifique,’ combining classical music in an intimate setting, with the opportunity to talk with the musicians after the concert while sipping fine wine or champagne. This is followed by a gourmet menu provided by Patina Catering with French champagne and fruits and petite, delicious pastries for dessert. This final concert of the season features J. Brahms: Songs for Mezzo Soprano, Piano and Viola op 91 and songs and duets for Soprano and Mezzo-Soprano and Piano and Piano Quartet n. 3 in C minor op 60. The Piano Quartet is a tribute to Goethe’s young hero, Werther whose love was unrequited, just like Brahms love for Clara Schumann. The second portion of the program is G. Mahler’s Piano Quartet in A minor, written in 1876 when he was just 16 years old. For him A minor symbolized the “unconscious anticipation in things to come.” Even though this was written at a young age, the piece is mature, poignant and melancholy and is considered almost clairvoyant. Many sad events lay ahead for the composer, the death of his children and the misery of a World War. This is the only Chamber piece known to be composed by Mahler. Le Salon will be announcing their 2013 -2014 Program and will offer a discount of up to 20% off the complete season at this time. SACRAMENTO, CA -- The California State Assembly approved legislation authored by Assemblymember Bob Blumenfield (D-San Fernando Valley) that will help veterans translate military medical training and experience into jobs as civilian paramedics. This push is part of Blumenfield’s continued efforts to help veterans get jobs or attend college.Assembly Bill (AB) 704 passed the Assembly with a 73-0 vote and goes to the State Senate for further

review.“A generation of combat medics is returning to civilian life and we need their help to meet our growing health care needs,” said Blumenfield. “They fought to protect the American Dream. Let’s make sure red tape does not keep it from them. We must remove the roadblocks keeping veterans from succeeding back home.”Combat medics are the Army’s second largest specialty after infantry. AB 704 requires the state Emergency Medical

Services Authority to develop standards for transferring their military training and experience into existing academic and fieldwork requirements for paramedic licensure. Despite similarities in training, and sometimes more rigorous military standards, veterans pursuing a paramedic license in California cannot get credit for their qualifications.Paramedics administer medications, start intravenous lines, provide advanced airway management for patients,

and learn to resuscitate and support patients with significant problems such as heart attacks and traumas.California has more veterans than any other state. We have over 2 million veterans overall and 30,000 veterans will return annually to California as the nation’s wars wind down in Iraq and Afghanistan.Last year Blumenfield authored legislation to streamline state commercial trucking licensure rules for veterans who drove commercial vehicles in the military and also to extend priority enrollment to veterans in state colleges and universities for the full duration of education benefits paid under the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Travel tips of the week

By Jean Strauber, Travel EditorAre you ready for a horse-friendly vacation? The Temecula Valley in Southern California’s wine country is popular with visiting horse owners and aspiring equestrians. Here are 10 insights provided me by Annette Brown of the Temecula Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau which I’d like to share with you.• Gaits In the Grapes Guided Trail Rides: Equestrian trail guides Gaits In the Grapes (GIG) provides the opportunity for visiting horse owners to ride some of the Temecula Valley’s beautiful, private vineyards as well as the larger wine country trails network. Less-busy weekdays are optimum for these rides. GIG strives to ensure safe, quality time “in and out of the saddle.” Guides attend to owners’ horses while visitors enjoy winery tours, wine tasting premium varietals and proprietary blends, and dining in Temecula Valley Southern California Wine Country restaurants or enjoying a picnic with vineyard views. GIG is also a resource for overnight, horse boarding suggestions.• Saddle Up Wine Tours on Horseback: Saddle Up Wine Tours provides gentle horses and guides for rides like the Historical Wine Tour. Guests ride alongside vineyards, ranches, and wineries along the De Portola Wine Trail. En route to wine tastings, riders learn of historical wine country anecdotes. Wine-tasting destinations include wineries such as Oak Mountain with wine tasting in the mountaintop veranda with valley views; Keyways Vineyard and Winery, one of Temecula Valley’s original wine estates with early California ambiance; and Robert Renzoni Vineyards, recognized for its production of premium, Italian varietals. Saddle Up also offers basic, one-hour-or-more, trail rides daily with horses provided.• Horse Drawn Carriage Rides through The Vineyards: Temecula Carriage Company provides wine tasting tours in Temecula Valley. In a carriage drawn by elegant horses,

passengers travel leisurely along a scenic route through the vineyards. Along the way wineries are visited such as Leoness Cellars, Wilson Creek Winery, Lorimar Vineyards and Winery, and Ponte Family Estate, to taste award-winning wines. Guests also enjoy a gourmet, wine country picnic.• Equestrian Trails at the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve: Once part of the vast Vail cattle ranch, the 8,300-acre Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve offers visiting horse owners nearly seven miles of multi-use trails in the Sylvan Meadows area. Open sunrise to sunset and popular with local equestrians, trails include Sylvan Meadows, Cajalco Trail, Tovashol Trail, Shivela Trail, and Stevenson Canyon. The terrain is open, rolling hills with some oak woodlands and areas of chaparral. Riders-in-the-know get picnic fare to-go in advance (Campini’s just south of Downtown Old Town Temecula; E.A.T. Marketplace in Uptown Temecula), and enjoy dining al fresco under the oaks at the Sylvan Meadows picnic tables. • Equestrian Events at Galway Downs Equestrian Center: The 240-acre Galway Downs Equestrian Center is the site of shows like International Horse Trials where attendees enjoy gourmet food and drink, music, and the excitement of as many as 100 riders on horses galloping over imposing cross-country jumps. Throughout the year Galway Downs hosts eventing (“equestrian triathlons” that include dressage, cross-country, and show jumping). Galway Downs is also home to the new Temecula Valley Polo Club showcasing local and internationally renowned players. • Steakhouse Dining in Old Town Temecula and Uptown Temecula: In Old Town Temecula, the atmosphere and prime-beef fare at The Gambling Cowboy and Texas Lil’s Mesquite Grill recall Old West glory days when hitching posts lined Old Town streets and cattlemen, ranchers, and cowboys walked the boardwalks. The Gambling Cowboy features an elegant, late-19th century setting, and classic, fine steak and seafood. Texas Lil’s is Temecula Valley’s original ranch-style steakhouse with a menu that includes Angus choice rib eye steaks.• Get Country Western at Temecula Stampede: Adjacent the southern Old Town Temecula gateway arch is the expansive country-western music venue and dance hall, the Temecula Stampede. The music, lyrics, two-step, line dancing, and bull riding make this a popular outpost for equestrian enthusiasts who love to dance. • Horseback Trail Rides and Wine Trail Rides at Vail Lake: With a ranch-like setting, ancient oaks and California chaparral, Vail Lake was the eastern boundary of Temecula Valley’s historic Vail Cattle Ranch; the Vail Ranch spanned to the west as far as the Santa Rosa Plateau. Guided horseback trail rides are offered on-site at the 9,000 acre Vail Lake property. The property is just southeast of welcoming and gracious Temecula Valley Southern California Wine Country so also offered are Wine Trail Rides that combine scenic lake-view riding and a canyon ride to one of the De Portola Wine Trail’s award-winning wineries. Included are wine tasting, wine country meal, and entertainment. • Temecula Equestrians in the 4th of July Parade in Old Town Temecula: With untouched chaparral-covered hills as backdrop to the west, and the Mission-revival style Temecula Civic Center to the east, the Star-Spangled Fourth of July Parade along Old Town Front Street is a festive, annual tradition. Among the parade’s most popular entries are the patriotic equestrian riders and horses accessorized in red-white-and-blue.• Supplies for Visiting Horse Owners in Temecula: Because Temecula Valley is a burgeoning equestrian area, the valley is also horse-friendly for visiting horse owners to find supplies. Dan’s Feed and Seed, just south of Old Town Temecula, carries horse feed, tack, and other supplies as well as western wear. Nearby Temecula Valley Southern California Wine Country and Valle de Los Caballos is Big Horse Feed & Mercantile with a variety of feed, tack, and equestrian-friendly apparel. The Temecula Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau, the region’s official tourism marketing organization and resource for visitors is online at VisitTemecula.org.

ASHLAND, OREGON — The DeLaunay House, located 185 N. Pioneer is nestled in Ashland’s Historic Railroad District, just a block from downtown and the renown Shakespeare Theatres. This 1909 Craftsman Style Guest house was renovated by successful artist, in-terior designer and proprietor, Debo-rah DeLaunay in 2003 as a fulfillment of a dream and an act of love.Besides Deborah’s own stained glass art pieces that are displayed throughout the house, you will see hand painted clouds and sky above as you walk up the stairs, then a gor-geous Shakespearian robe hung for all to view. When you enter a suite called Zen Cottage you can’t miss the claw-foot tub adorned in tiger stripes to match the elegant animal print ac-cents in the adjoining rooms. The Peace Mountain suite is very spa-cious and lush with it’s rich deep plum velvets, fringed pillows and silk hand knotted rug. Harmony Suite, the largest and most luxuri-ous beholds the original Craftsman built-ins surrounding the dining room. The Mission style is prevalent again in the window details and pocket French doors leading to the living room where a grand king size bed is located.Deborah has incorporated heirloom antiques, collectables and her own original art collection from artists all over the country, making this a very interesting interior and a feeling of being home. In addition to the fabulous suites, the DeLaunay House offers a variety of amenities which include fully equipped kitchenettes, wireless Internet ac-cess, cable, a/c, private patio areas, and a front porch so inviting you can’t resist sitting in one of the Adirondack chairs to view the sun setting on the mountains.Zen Suite Dresser The most exciting amenities are the onsite Spa services such as massage, facials and waxing treatments, and yoga! Imagine checking into your room having your massage then soaking in your claw-foot tub with aromatherapy and then off to a restful sleep. Another special service offered are the cus-tom baskets you can order for a picnic at beautiful Lithia park or a romance basket full of goodies to compliment your get-a way. (Continued from page 1) -- The B & B is a bungalow and carriage house build in 1913. It has all the modern-day comforts of today’s technology lightly sprinkled with old-fashioned hospitality. The property is just three short blocks from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, historic Ashland Plaza, the natural beauty of Lithia Park, and all the restaurants and shops in downtown Ashland. It is easily walkable to all the main attractions, and you will find the Cowslips Belle just right to your liking. There is something about Ashland; it feels kind of similar to what a real life Mayberry might be. Everyone is happy and says hello and good bye, please and thank you. Almost like they were raised properly, like in old time America, where children were seen and not heard. We walked around town, looking for something to buy and to get our appetites up. After strolling through a really cool magic shop, and a yarn store to die for, we decided to have lunch at Pangea. Now I thought this was what they called the Earth and all the continents a really long time ago, but it is also a restaurant called yum. I had the “Wrap Of Khan,” a lightly spiced chicken wrap with artichoke hearts, grilled zucchini and creamy roasted red pepper cheese with lettuce. I could have one of those every day, it was amazing. Joanne had the “Hummus Wrapture,” which was Mediterranean hummus with carrots, sprouts, fresh tomatoes and cucumber. I can’t remember what Mom & Dad got, but one of them had the “Soup Of The Day” and I wanted to dip my wrap in it. (Which would have been a bit much, considering it was not my soup, but the place is that good). Whatever you are eating, you will want to try, test, and eat everything else being enjoyed as well. After lunch we were off to go wine tasting. This is another great thing about Ashland, there are wineries all around the area, and this makes for a great afternoon. After about the fifth winery, and the world’s greatest wrap, I was ready for a long nap. All of us needed to go back to the Cowslips Belle to recharge before painting the town red. There are many great restaurants in town, something over 80 within walking distance, and they all have something special to offer the foodie. We chose to walk around the park before dinner, and that in itself is a fun activity. There is a stream that runs right through the park and the town, and you could wade in there and splash around. Believe me when I tell you, the water is cold and not for the faint of heart. We had a light dinner as tomorrow was going to be a big day, not only were we going birding with Harry Fuller, we were also off to the Green Springs Inn, just outside of town. The following morning we met with world renowned bird expert, Mr. Harry Fuller, and his knowledge of birds was thoroughly informative. He knew their scientific name, their mating habits; if they flock or are solitary birds, you name it… he knew it. I had never looked at birds in this light before, and from that day forward, I always take some time every day to do some birding. Thank you for caring so much about birds Harry Fuller. After our mind expanding look at our feathered friends, we were off to stay at the Green Springs Inn. Now they do say they are located in town, but maybe they are just talking about their post office box. It was quite a haul up a really scary mountain, but once we got there, it was perfect. The Green Springs Inn is run by a family that has built each cabin they rent out by hand. They have their own lumber mill and saw, and it is quite the operation. We met with the father, son, and the rest of the cast and crew. It was really neat, and very far away from what some people would call civilization.Once we got to the cabin, I schooled everyone in cards again, then had a soak in the hot tub. My parents enjoyed the master suite, while Joanne and I camped up in the loft. It sure brought back memories, and was just plain old fun. I definitely recommend checking out the Green Springs Inn, for solitude and peace of mind. I really can’t say enough nice things about Ashland, Oregon. It is just over the California border, and not that far a drive from Mt. Shasta. When visiting, be sure to bring some hiking boots, golf clubs, fishing rods, and anything else pertaining to outdoor recreation. I had a blast visiting this beautiful little town, and plan on returning very soon. I give Ashland a high five and two thumbs up, get there as soon as you can. politics & government

-- ask “goVernment george” --Question: Dear Government George, what is C-SPAN?

Answer: C-SPAN is the best, especially if you are really into government, C-SPAN is an acronym for Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network, and is an American cable television network that offers coverage of federal government proceedings and other public affairs programming via its three television channels (C-SPAN, C-SPAN2 and C-SPAN3), one radio station and a group of websites that provide streaming media and archives of C-SPAN programs. C-SPAN’s television channels are available to over 100 million cable and satellite households within the United States, while WCSP-FM, also called C-SPAN Radio, is broadcast on FM radio in Washington, D.C., and is available throughout the U.S. on XM Satellite Radio, and via internet streaming and an iPhone app. The network televises U.S. political events, particularly live and gavel to gavel coverage of the US Congress as well as occasional proceedings of the Canadian and British Parliaments and major events worldwide. Its coverage of political and policy events is unedited, thereby providing viewers (or listeners) with unfiltered information about politics and government. Non-political coverage includes: historical programming, programs dedicated to non-fiction books and interview programs with noteworthy individuals connected to public policy. C-SPAN is a non-profit organization, funded by the affiliate fees paid by its cable and satellite affiliates, and does not carry advertisements on any of its networks, radio stations or websites. The network operates independently, and neither the cable industry nor Congress has power over the content of its programming. Brian Lamb, C-SPAN’s chairman and CEO, first conceived of C-SPAN in 1975 while working as the Washington, D.C. bureau chief of cable industry trade magazine Cablevision.

-- BusIness profIle: CadeflaW --The California Anti-Defamation Legacy Law Advocates (CADeflaw) is a non-profit, charitable and advocacy organization that has been in existence for three years. Its advocacy is narrow and specific: to have a law passed in California allowing for family members of defamed deceased people to sue for civil damages. The passionate group behind CADeflaw work lovingly toward the goal of vindication and advocacy for the defamation and slander of those who are deceased, using the legacy of Michael Jackson as a foundation. While he endured slander and libel while alive (and did take legal action in some of the cases), this slander and libel against Michael Jackson has grown after his death, leaving his loved ones to deal with the aftermath. The group believes that the legacy of those deceased lives on and should be honored. With these goals comes a special responsibility to stand up for what is right; stand up for those who are deceased and be their voice through action.According to CADeflaw, the evolution of common law has left the living with civil defamation laws and the dead with criminal defamation laws. The latter have either fallen into disuse or been repealed, as was California’s criminal libel statute, in 1986. Now, if a person is dead nearly anything can be said or written about him. For example, President Johnson was accused of being a “multiple murderer” by Barr McClellan in Blood, Money and Power: How L.B.J. Killed J.F.K. First Lady Betty Ford was also slandered. According to the Westboro Baptist Church she encouraged American women to “engage in extra-marital sex” according to the Christian Post. CADeflaw’s goal is to include the deceased among those who can be legally defamed in California and give their families a statute upon which to base a civil cause of action.CADeflaw representative Mary Brookins states, “We all deserve a legacy that is truth, and that cannot be challenged with lies and hearsay after we are gone. Our legacy is how we will be remembered and deserves due respect. Having to deal with incorrect and defaming content aimed against their loved ones who are deceased, while at the same time dealing with personal grief from their loss, can become unbearable. We need your help to bring about this necessary change to protect each person’s legacy, living or deceased, and each of you can take positive action to help.”CADeflaw’s ultimate mission is to protect and preserve, publicly, the legacy of those deceased, as well as proposing that all states and countries having defamation/slander civil codes, change the law to include defamation of both a natural person, whether living or deceased, as unlawful. A draft for the bill to have this law changed has been written by the California Legislative Counsel and now CADeflaw is striving to convince a California Legislator to introduce it to the Senate. The community can learn more about CADeflaw and its mission at www.cadeflaw.wordpress.com and can sign the online petition at www.change.org/petitions/california-cadeflaw-petition. To find contact information for your California legislators and tell them your thoughts on the issue, visit assembly.ca.gov/assemblymembers.

“Cool” quotations:~ “Nothing gives one person so much advantage over another as to remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances.” -- Thomas Jefferson ~ “I never cut class. I loved getting A’s, I liked being smart. I liked being on time. I thought being smart is cooler than anything in the world.” -- Michelle Obama~ “One cool judgment is worth a thousand hasty counsels. The thing to do is to supply light and not heat.” -- Woodrow Wilson~ “Keep cool; anger is not an argument.” -- Daniel Webster~ “As a kid, I did want to be an old-timer, since they were the ones with the big stories and the cool clothes. I wanted to go there. Now, I guess I want to bring that with me and go back in time.” -- Tom Waits

-- faCts of the Week --According to Ripley’s Believe it or Not:~ Chris and Maria Jones-Elliot are parents to twins Amy and Katie who, due to complications during the pregnancy, were born 87 days apart. Maria gave birth to Amy 23 weeks into her pregnancy. The doctors tried to deliver the second child, but sister Katie wasn’t ready to meet the world until 87 days later. ~ A 55-year-old woman from India went to the hospital because she had been experiencing a tickling sensation in her lower throat for about a week. The lady had eaten some chicken and she assumed a bone had become lodged in her throat, but upon examination, the doctors found a centipede in the upper part of oesophagus, the passage between the pharynx and the stomach. The centipede was still very much alive. ~ A 6-pound chihuahua named Tinker Bell joined her pet parents for a morning of flea market shopping and was standing on a platform trailer when a 70mph wind whisked her away. Dorothy and Lavern Utley freaked out when they couldn’t find their cuddly companion, so they did the next logical thing -- hired a pet psychic. The clairvoyant led them into the woods where they found Tinker Bell…one mile from where she was blown away! Tinker Bell was hungry and dirty, but was otherwise OK.
