gIVe a goat or sheep thIs season! For many Americans, the wrapping -- and tearing open -- of gifts is part of the joy of the holidays. In fact, we spend $2.6 bil-lion dollars ensuring we have our gifts colorfully clad! The paper really piles up, representing a large portion of the 4 million tons of excess waste each holiday season. Before your spirits are dampened, consider that making small changes can make a large differ-ence. Think outside the gift-wrapped box this holiday and give one alterna-tive gift this year in place of a tradi-tional gift. Small change. Big differ-ence. No wrapping needed on a gift like chicks from Heifer International -- the joy comes from a different source. You can be assured -- and share with the person you’re giving to -- that your gift means self-reliance and hope for another family. Make a commitment today to think outside the gift box this year and consider alternative gifts of hope.

Viewing Rosa Parks’ dress or Louis Armstrong’s trumpet can ignite a mo-ment that doesn’t just teach us about history, but about ourselves. The stories, artifacts and treasures to be housed at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American Histo-ry and Culture (NMAAHC), the new-est Smithsonian museum opening in 2015, will remind us of where we’ve been, the challenges we still face and point us toward what we can become. The museum will use the history of African Americans as a lens into what

it means to be an American. If you value the richness and diversity of the African Ameri-can experience and want to share how it has helped shape this nation, please help move the NMAAHC’s vision of unity and education forward. Pledge to support the preserva-tion and celebration of African American history and culture through the NMAAHC. Dear Editor,The Navy is wasting hundreds of millions of dollars on a combat ship that is cracking, flooding, rusting and can’t even keep its engines running. But it’s also buying an alternate version of the ship that doesn’t have as many problems - and costs $12 million less per ship. So why is the Navy still pouring taxpayer dollars into a floating lemon? Keeping both versions of what the Navy calls the Littoral Combat Ship doesn’t make sense. What is up with the Navy? -Roy G. a ConVersatIon WIth edIth head

This past summer I had the pleasure to view at the El Portal Theatre a re-incarnation of a truly Hollywood icon, Edith Head, when Ms. Susan Classen starred in “A Conversation With Edith Head.” As a child I listened to Ms Head when she appeared on the radio, and later television, program, Art Linkletter’s House Party. She would discuss the costumes she designed for her latest picture at Paramount Pictures

and later Universal Studios. A few lucky (or unlucky) ladies would get a once-over and tips from Head on the outfits they were wearing, and were told what they could do to improve their appearance. Currently at the Carrie Hamilton Theatre in the Pasadena Playhouse you too can meet Ms. Edith Head, or should I say Ms. Susan Classen, (pictured) who not only looks like the late Hollywood designer but has her mannerisms down to a “T.” Before the show begins, Stuart Molton who will perform as host, will greet you and ask what questions would you ask of Edith Head. During the performance, Ms. Head (Classen) will answer them. She will also reminisce about her beginning at Paramount and offer some comments about the stars that she dressed. She’ll tell you about those she adored dressing and also those stars whose costumes she created who she disliked. Hint: Don’t ask about Claudette Colbert. And, if you’re sitting in the front row, what you are wearing might get an once-over from the designer. The set could be her living room with an “Oscar” on a table and countless photos of the stars she has dressed. There are also mannequins wearing costumes from Oscar-winning films.“A Conversation With Edith

Head” is still as fresh and enjoyable when as I first saw it during the summer. The play, written by Patty Calistro, will be appearing at the Carrie Hamilton Theatre in the Pasadena

Playhouse at 39 S. Molina Avenue, in Pasadena.Schedule is: Thursdays and Fridays at 8:00 pm; Saturdays at 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm; Sundays at 2:00 pm. No performances on Thursday and Friday November 22 and 23, an additional performance at 7 pm on Sunday, November 25. Ticket prices: $40. Running time: 1 hour and 25 minutes. There will be no

intermission. The Pasadena Playhouse is located at 39 South El Molino Avenue in Pasadena. For tickets, please visit www.pasadenaplayhouse.org or call (636) 356-7529.

~According to the Georgian calendar, November is the eleventh month of the year. In the early Roman calendar, it was the ninth month. The Roman Senate elected to name the eleventh month for Tiberus Caesar, and since Augustus time, it has had only 30 days. Originally, there were 30 days, then 29, then 31.~November comes between the fall and winter months. The leaves are almost completely gone from the trees, and the rest have lost most of their color. The Anglo-Saxons referred to November as the ‘wind month’ and the ‘blood month’ - probably because this is the month they killed their animals for food.

Van nuys theFt VICtIm pleads For return oF stolen artIFaCts

VAN NUYS, CA -- Theft victim Diane Petersen has issued a plea for the return of the important Native American artifacts that were stolen from her car on August 3, 2012 at 16707 Gault Street, Van Nuys. Among the stolen artifacts was a museum-quality white dress (pictured) commissioned from Red Cloud School on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Petersen stated “For the sake of clearing conscience, and in realizing how difficult it is to sell something so personal and unusual, returning the dress is the best course to follow. It needs to find its way back home now, and there will be no questions asked either of anyone knowing of its whereabouts, or of the person returning them. These simply need to be returned, especially at this time nearing Thanksgiving.” She is asking whoever took the items to return them to St. Bridget of Sweden Catholic Church, 16711 Gault Street in Van Nuys.

sherIFF’s deputy Charged WIth oFF-duty murderLOS ANGELES, CA -- A 41-year-old Sheriff’s deputy was charged by the District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division (JSID) on November 15 with murdering a neighbor who fought with the defendant’s 20-year-old son outside the family home in Sylmar last summer.Francisco Gamez II was arrested by Los Angeles police on November 14. He was charged the following day in case No. BA404719. Bail was recommended at $4 million. Gamez was charged with the murder of Armando Casillas, the attempted murder of a second victim and discharging a weapon from an occupied vehicle. Each count carries an allegation that the defendant personally used a firearm to commit the crimes. The case will be prosecuted by JSID Deputy District Attorneys Paul Nunez and Natalie Adomian. The June 17 altercation that allegedly led to the shooting occurred shortly after 10 p.m. in Sylmar. Defendant Gamez was contacted after the fight by his eldest son. The defendant allegedly drove to the area, confronted the 38-year-old Casillas and another man, and fired two shots. Casillas was killed; the other man was not hit. Around 11:15 p.m., Mission Area patrol officers were flagged down by citizens in the 14000 block of Beaver Street in Sylmar. Officers were directed to Casillas, who was suffering from a gunshot wound. Casillas was transported to Providence Holy Cross Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The second victim who was shot at by the assailant at the time of the homicide was not injured.Mission Homicide detectives began to investigate the murder and developed leads that possibly connected a deputy sheriff to the crime. As the case progressed, Robbery Homicide Division assumed primary investigative responsibility because the suspect was a possible deputy sheriff. If convicted as charged, Gamez faces a maximum state prison term of 75 years to life.

Participation in active science laboratories will allow students to become immersed in scientific lessons and make connections between the lessons and their own lives. The grant is awarded in conjunction with Philippe Cousteau’s environmental education nonprofit EarthEcho International and its Water Planet Challenge program, which supports service-learning initiatives that improve the health of our water planet. Grant recipients will have access to Water Planet Challenge’s rich online resources, including: step-by-step action guides, video segments, discussion guides, and downloadable resources. “With these grants, we are supporting educator- driven solutions that contribute to improved student performance in public schools,” said Harriet Sanford, president and CEO of the NEA Foundation. “Our support enables educators to engage in a wide variety of innovative approaches to the benefit of students across the country.” “Across the country, today’s youth are engaged and committed to finding solutions to the challenges facing the environment,” said Philippe Cousteau, President of EarthEcho International. “The NEA Foundation grants help educators and students turn this passion into action one community at a time.” Nationwide, the NEA Foundation announced that it is awarding 49 grants totaling $197,000 to support educators’ efforts to improve teaching and learning. The NEA Foundation awards two primary categories of grants to public education professionals: Student Achievement Grants for initiatives to improve academic achievement, and Learning and Leadership Grants for high-quality professional development activities. A team of 20 educators, many of whom are former grantees, carefully reviewed all applications and evaluated each one against a set of criteria. Funded grants were selected for the quality of the proposed ideas and their potential for enhancing student achievement. The latest grants were awarded to educators in 26 different states. The NEA Foundation has invested more than $8.6 million in grants to support the work of almost 4,000 educators from every state in the country to help students succeed. Each year, the Foundation awards approximately 150 Student Achievement and Learning & Leadership Grants. To learn about these educators’ projects, visit our searchable grantee database. The Foundation awards its grants to educators three times a year. The next grant deadline is February 1, 2013. Application forms and a video with step by step instructions on how to apply can be found at neafoundation.org.

Travel tips of the week

-- destInatIon oF the Week --“WestWInds Inn, key West, Fl”

Hospitality, intimacy and relaxation are the hallmarks of every stay at Westwinds Inn. Located in the Historic Seaport District of Old Town, this Inn was built before World War II but has a Victorian compound with the comforts of a modern hotel. Secluded in a native tropical setting, the gardens are lush with balmy palm trees, shrubs and a mini waterfall. Westwinds is a per-fect place to relax, unwind, and put your worries behind you. They of-fer a complimentary extended con-tinental breakfast by the pool every morning, two large pools (one with a Jet spa), and a competent and hos-pitable friendly staff. If you yearn for excitement, Westwinds Inn is close to the waterfront where you can go on sunset sails, snorkeling and enjoy Duval Street’s restaurants and shops. One of Westwinds’ features (rare nowadays) is the Neighborly Library. Their stock of 150+ titles mostly is in English but also includes French and Spanish. Most are hardback. A few paperback. All are new and invite your passing some of your time. You’ll find a wide range for your omnivorous appetite. (Check out www.westwindskeywest.com)

plan to see kazoos, a super museum and the WolF park

By Jean Strauber, Travel EditorFrom the Winter 2012 Northeast Group Leader publication I have read about three interesting destination sites that I wish to share with you:• Eden, New York: When you were a child did you ever play a kazoo? Today, though most kazoos are plastic and made in China, you can travel to Eden and visit the company that has been producing metal kazoos since 1916, the Original American Kazoo Company. There is a free factory tour, which is offered Tuesday to Saturday. From Wednesdays to Fridays you can watch kazoos being made using the company’s original equipment. You can even use their Make Your Own Kazoo station to make your own for a fee. The Original American Kazoo Company was established in 1916 as the original metal factory and is now the only metal kazoo factory in North America. In the company’s museum are kazoos of all shapes and sizes on display. The collection chronicles the history of kazoos as well as the factory. You’ll see several types of wooden kazoos, liquor bottle shaped kazoos that celebrated the end of prohibition, antique kazoo instruments, silver and gold kazoos, and many more. For more information you can go www.edenkazoo.com or phone (716) 992-3960. The Original American Kazoo Company is located at 8703 South Main Street, Eden, NY. Eden is located just south of Buffalo, NY.• Metropolis, Illinois: We’re all familiar with Metropolis, the fictional city made famous in the Superman comic books, movies and television shows. But, what most people don’t know is that there is really a town named Metropolis in the state of Illinois. The town, founded in 1839, is located at the southernmost tip of Illinois, across the Ohio River from Paducah KY. The Illinois town is the official Home of Superman, as accorded by a resolution passed in 1972 by the Illinois House of Representative and confirmed by the Illinois State Senate and the governor. The second weekend of June finds the town holding the annual Superman Celebration that includes entertainment, celebrity appearances and superhero costume contests. A 15-foot bronze statue of the super hero is on display in the center of Superman Square. A statue of actress Noel Neil (Lois Lane in the ABC TV series that ran from 1952 to 1958) has been placed two blocks away. Across the street from Superman’s statue is the Super Museum. It is filled with over 20,000 items devoted to the 60-plus year old saga. The museum is the life’s work of Jim Hambrick who owns the Superman souvenir and collectibles store that you must pass through to reach the museum’s entrance. On exhibit you’ll find collectibles, movie props, Superman products and promotional materials. You’ll see costumed mannequins, theater lobby cards, posters, and thousands of toys and plastic figures. The Super Museum is located at 517 Market Street, Metropolis, IL, 62960. For more information call (618) 524-5518. • Battle Ground, Indiana: In Battle Ground (name was inspired by the Battle of Tippecanoe), you’ll find Wolf Park, a place where wolves have a place to flourish and visitors can learn more about them. Wolf Park, open year-round, offers tours on most days. During the high season (May 1 to November 1) you will find guided tours departing

between 1:00 and 5:00 pm on Tuesdays through Sundays. The park offers programs that involve a lecture and tour of the facility, presently home to more than 20 wolves, as well as coyotes, foxes, and a small herd of bison. A litter of wolf pups were born in the spring. These youngsters have been going through an extensive process to learn how to socialize to humans. In the evening, guests have an opportunity to hear a more in-depth discussion of the wolf’s “trademark” behavior -- the howl. You’ll be given seats to a sing-a-long while Wolf Park’s expert handlers enter the enclosure and interact with the main pack of wolves. In fact, guests are invited to howl and will see and hear the park’s wolves returning the call. Howl nights are scheduled from May 1 to November 30 on Fridays and Saturdays and December 1 to April 30 on Saturdays only. For further information go to www.wolfpark.org or call (765) 567-2265. Wolf Park is located at 4004 East 800 North, Battle Ground, Indiana 47920.

WIne tastIng & dInosaur CaVes In pIsmo BeaCh, CalIFornIa

By Jon Bogart, Special to the Van Nuys News PressPismo Beach on the California Central Coast has one of the greatest possible locations. Halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, it’s able to draw from both Northern and Southern California, and with direct access from the Central Valley, it’s an easy “over the hill” from Bakersfield, Stockton, etc. Because of this geographic gift, Pismo Beach is busy 12 months a year. Mild winters give way to cool sunny summers. It’s never too cold and never too hot if you’re at Pismo Beach. On the first weekend in March, Shell Beach hosted the World of Pinot Noir Festival – two days of grand tastings - over 250 Pinot Noirs from around the world. This was blended with chefs wine dinners, a golf tournament, and a variety of activities at the local wineries. We were going to be tasting wine all weekend, so we decided not to drive and rely on public transportation during our entire journey. This seemed like an impossible task, because of the distances and the small town situation where there is a notorious lack of convenient bus service. So we went to the internet and Googled Pismo Beach RTA, and were surprised to find an abundance of timetables and bus routes that take you wherever you want to go. We called ahead and got us 7-day passes that were OK on any route throughout the county.Since we were not driving, we booked the Amtrak Surfliner to San Luis Obispo leaving from Van Nuys. The Van Nuys station is full service and offers free parking. Try parking a car for free close to any airport, much less right at the terminal. Service to San Luis Obispo is convenient - three trains a day. We boarded a morning Surfliner, getting us to SLO in about 6 hours. Sure beats driving.Enroute we decided to detrain one stop before SLO at Grover Beach, because we discovered there was a bus that would take us directly to our lodging destination. Sure enough, the bus was on time and dropped us a block away from the Ocean Breeze Inn, located in downtown Pismo Beach. The Ocean Breeze Inn’s slogan proclaims Real Value in the Heart of Pismo. That statement turned out to be more than an advertising slogan. The Ocean Breeze Inn is a real gem. It’s literally the most convenient location in this beach community, half a block from the beach. Accommodations range from a single queen size bed up to two bedroom suites with sundecks and kitchenettes. There is something for everyone at the Ocean Breeze Inn. And the rates a very reasonable considering that you are steps from one of the best beaches in California. We arrived on Friday early afternoon, checked in and got ready for the World of Pinot Noir at the Cliffs in Shell Beach, about 4 miles up the road. Sure enough, there was a bus that took us within two block of the festival. The grounds were festive and there was a buzz in the air as people lined up to attend. The Pinot Noir grape is known as a fickle and seductive varietal originally sourced in the epicenter of Burgundy (France). It has adapted very well to the cool and temperate climates of California’s Central Coast, Oregon and Washington. It’s a wine that pairs extremely well with food, or it can be enjoyed by the glass as an alternative to a cocktail. The people began lining up early and when the festival opened there were several hundred ready to taste Pinot Noir. As press reps, we got an early start because all the wines were available for private tasting in the media room. That made things very easy. The tents were

carefully arranged, and what made this tasting distinctive was that each attendee received an elegant engraved goblet, specifically designed for Pinot Noir. The right glass makes all the difference in the world when it comes to wine tasting. This was the best.Inside there were 125 Pinot Noir vintners, gourmet food and a tasting from an award winning cheese maker from Carmel. The food, wine and cheese were in such abundance that it was impossible to try everything, making the entry fee a bargain. On Saturday, the entire process was repeated with 125 different wineries, different food and an opportunity to pair cheeses that you didn’t get to on Friday. The World of Pinot Noir is an annual industry gathering that sells out to capacity each year. It is a very special occasion, not to be missed. For further information and details of next year’s event, check out their website www.wopn.com.Friday and Saturday were devoted to the festival, however on Saturday night we got to visit Harry’s Bar and Grill in downtown Pismo Beach. The Ocean Breeze Inn is only one block away from Harry’s so there is no need for a designated driver. Harry’s is a legendary spot that has live music every night except Thursday, which is Karaoke night. On weekends, they bring in top bands from LA and San Francisco and the place rocks till 2am. There is a $5 cover on weekends and the drinks are cheap. It’s a kick to find a place like this on the beach on the Central Coast. Worth a trip to Pismo just to visit Harry’s,On Sunday, we got up early and walked the length of the beach to Oceano. Pismo is one of the few places where cars can drive on the sand. It’s the hard pack that makes this possible. You see campers, fifth wheelers and dune buggies right on the beach. We decided to visit Avila Beach, about ten miles to the north and, as expected, there is a trolley that runs from Pismo to Avila on weekends every hour on the hour - and it’s free. Avila is a cool place; there is a great golf resort, two huge piers, a pristine beach and a town that is brand new. There was an environmental disaster in the 90’s and it was necessary to destroy what was there and rebuild from the ground up. The results are an ultra modern planned community with shops, wineries, restaurants and lodging that is a destination unto itself. There is a walking trail that meanders through the golf course and a back country natural preserve where you can interact with nature looking at the plants, the critters and a stream that flows into the Pacific creating a wetland at the golf course and a natural habitat for trout. It’s all explained on the signs on the path. The Bob Jones Trail, as it’s called, runs by a couple of secluded hotels that are tranquil and serene. Outdoor dining is a must and there are several gift shops that carry unique items. One such item was a wreath that hangs on the wall where you fill with discarded wine corks to make an interesting wall hanging. Available from Epic Style there is a variety of options to store wine corks at very reasonable prices. Check out the collection at www.epicstyle.com. We strolled around Avila for the afternoon and caught the last trolley back to the Ocean Breeze Inn and spent the rest of the day exploring Pismo Beach. A must-do is a visit to Splash Café, home of award winning clam chowder. People line up outside to place their orders. You can dine in or carry out.On Monday we took a walk from the Ocean Breeze Inn to the Dinosaur Caves about 3 miles to the north. It’s a great walk along the beach and then you climb a flight of stairs to get to the top of the bluffs that give you an oceanside walk through various resort properties that are linked together. One amazing sight is at the Shore Cliff Lodge where there is a spiral staircase, connected to nothing, that resembles the Tower of Babel, just standing there on the beach. Checking with the local historian, it turns out that the tower was once connected to a bridge and it was the way to get to the beach from the resort. The bridge was removed when a new access path was built, and they left the spiral staircase by itself. It’s a real conversation piece. Because we were having such a good time we changed our reservation to the Amtrak Coast Starlight that gets into San Luis Obispo at 3:30. There was no problem with this change because there is a connecting bus from the Pismo Beach to a through bus that runs every hour and, yep, has a stop right at the SLO Amtrak station. We bid farewell to our host at the Ocean Breeze Inn, vowing to return soon. The Ocean Breeze Inn is an experience and enhances the stay in Pismo Beach because of its location and its ambiance. We caught the Coast Starlight and were back in LA at 8pm. What a trip! Wine, food, entertainment, nature, and action…spread out over 30 miles of San Luis Obispo County available and accessible without a car. Who would have ever thought! For info, maps and route schedules visit www.slorta.org. For info on the Ocean Breeze Inn visit www.oceanbreezeinn.net. Happy Trails.

-- golF Course oF the Week --“St Enodoc Golf Club, England, UK”

St Enodoc Golf Club on the North Cornwall coast overlooks the Camel Estuary, with Padstow on the far side, and to the North out across the Atlantic. The location on the high sand dunes is ideal for golf combined with stunning sea views. The club is situated in one of the driest parishes in Cornwall and being on sand is ideal for golf twelve months of the year; even in the depths of winter frost is a rarity thanks to the warm Gulf Stream climate. The area is renowned as a holiday resort and with the advent of the motorway network and the upgrading of the A30 is only about 4 hours drive from London. The club has two courses; the Church course is the James Braid designed Championship course which in September 2005 the club hosted the English County Finals and the shorter Holywell course which is an ideal course for those wanting slightly less of a challenge. The club is complete with practice ground, two putting greens and an excellent clubhouse complete with bars and restaurant. The Church course at St Enodoc is a jewel of links golf in the South West as the James Braid design is set on the cliff tops overlooking the Camel estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. The Church Course has changed hardly at all since Bernard Darwin wrote his description shortly before the Second World War. In 2004 a review by Peter McEvoy of the course has resulted in the some new fairway bunkers being established and some additional tees and a new 13th green has been built and in 2007 the considerably lengthened Par 5 16th now 560 yards long was opened. Golfers today still play the course essentially as laid out by James Braid - a tremendous tribute to that great golfer’s vision and skill as it has stood the test of time even with the enormous changes in clubs and balls in the last seventy years. No two of the undulating holes are the same and the course features the famous Himalaya bunker on the Sixth, reputedly the tallest in Europe - and the Tenth winding down to the Norman St Enodoc Church.St Enodoc, one of the prettiest links courses, over the years has played host to top amateur events, so come and enjoy a real links experience and have your breath taken away by the views. Francisco Gamez is a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s De-partment. Gamez was later booked for murder and the addi-tional charges of attempted murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. -- Quotes oF the Week --Thanksgiving quotations:~ “To give thanks in solitude is enough. Thanksgiving has wings and goes where it must go. Your prayer knows much more about it than you do.” -- Victor Hugo~ “Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse.” -- Henry Van Dyke~ “Best of all is it to preserve everything in a pure, still heart, and let there be for every pulse a thanksgiving, and for every breath a song.” -- Konrad von Gesner~ “If a fellow isn’t thankful for what he’s got, he isn’t likely to be thankful for what he’s going to get.” -- Frank A. Clark~ “Drink and be thankful to the host! What seems insignificant when you have it, is important when you need it.” -- Franz Grillparzer~ “If you are really thankful, what do you do? You share.” -- W. Clement Stone~ “The thankful receiver bears a plentiful harvest.” -- William Blake~ “I celebrated Thanksgiving in an old-fashioned way. I invited everyone in my neighborhood to my house, we had an enormous feast, and then I killed them and took their land.” -- Jon Stewart
