LOS ANGELES RANKS NO. 1 CITY IN U.S. FOR ENERGY STAR BUILDINGS LOS ANGELES, CA -- On April 11, 2012, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the annual list of U.S. metropolitan areas with the most Energy Star certified buildings for 2011. Los Angeles remains number one on the list for the fourth consecutive year in a row. California has six cities on this year’s list—more than any other state. The list of top 25 cities also include Riverside, Calif., San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Houston, Dallas, San Diego, and Boston. In Southern California more than 930 Energy Star certified buildings in Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Diego have helped save more than $186 million in annual utility bills and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equal to emissions from the annual energy use in 11,600 homes. “More and more organizations are discovering the value of Energy Star as they work to cut costs and reduce their energy use,” said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. “This year marked the twentieth anniversary of the Energy Star program, and today Energy Star certified buildings in cities across America are helping to strengthen local economies and protect the planet for decades to come.” Nationally, nearly 16,500 Energy Star certified buildings across America have helped save about $2.3 billion in annual utility bills and prevent greenhouse gas emissions equal to emissions from the annual energy use of more than 1.5 million homes. First released in 2008, the list of cities with the most Energy Star certified buildings continues to show how cities across America, with help from Energy Star, are embracing energy efficiency as a simple and effective way to save money and prevent pollution. Los Angeles has remained the top city since 2008, while Washington, D.C. continues to hold onto second place for the third year in a row. Atlanta moved up from the number six spot in 2010 to third place this year and Boston and Riverside broke into the top ten. Tampa, Fla., Colorado Springs, Colo. and Salt Lake City all are new to list in 2011. Energy use in commercial buildings accounts for nearly 20 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions at a cost of more than $100 billion per year. Commercial buildings that earn EPA’s Energy Star must perform in the top 25 percent of similar buildings nationwide and must be independently verified by a licensed professional engineer or a registered architect. Energy Star certified buildings use an average of 35 percent less energy and are responsible for 35 percent less carbon dioxide emissions than typical buildings. Fifteen types of commercial buildings can earn the Energy Star, including office buildings, K-12 schools, and retail stores. -- FroM the siDelines --By Irving Leemon, Contributing ColumnistWhy are certain people and political organizations so willing to destroy this country? The first thing they want to do when things get tight is to reduce or delete jobs and funds to help the people who need that help the most. now they want to destroy our country’s future by taking away the opportunity to obtain a good education from most of the population by down grading the requirements for a high school diploma and reducing the funding for, and opportunities for, an advanced education. They also have been attacking the health care system and the few remaining retirement systems. Big corporations led the way in compromising the health care system by not going after the insurance and drug companies when they raised rates and reduced services. Instead they reduced and/or took away health subsidies from the workers. The drug and insurance companies have consistently raised their rates and profits at the expense of the patients and health care providers. In addition, the drug companies have been allowed to charge people in the United States many times more for the same drugs then they cost people in other countries. And what about the charges for emergency care? The for profit hospitals appear to charge what ever they feel they can get from their patients and their insurance companies. As a recent article in the L.A. Times showed, there is no apparent rhyme or reason behind the charges that they submit for their services. And what about the emergency room doctors being ‘contractors’ who separately charge for their services? They should be employees of the emergency rooms, albeit their fees listed separately. We absolutely need a single payer health care system. The large corporations and politicians have also taken retirement away from most of the workers. They have created retirement systems that depend almost exclusively on Wall Street and the stock market. We all know what has happened there. Wall Street has floundered, financially, legally, and morally, and will probably take years to recover. And those who wanted to stay in their homes during their retirement and/or depended on their houses for their retirement to help fund their retirement, have been financially hurt by the financial institutions and the reduction in house values to the point that retirement for them is now a pipe dream. There are people currently running for president of the United States who would continue these downward spirals for the American people. They say that they want to balance the budget by reducing taxes and government. However, they do not want to reduce tax exemptions, or increase taxes, on corporations, including those that move their headquarters and jobs out of this country to avoid paying taxes. Instead, they refuse to eliminate the existing tax incentives for doing so.Agree? Disagree? Email: [email protected]

Travel tips of the week

By Jean Strauber, Travel EditorThis week I will be on a press tour to ojai thanks to Janis Flippen acting on behalf of the ojai Visitors Bureau. The town of ojai is located near the city of Ventura. I have only visited ojai once in all the years I’ve lived in Southern California and that was just for a few hours. From the City of ojai’s web site I found this perfect description of this beautiful spot in Ventura County.“Just a few miles up Highway 33, but a world away from the headaches and traffic that thwart much of Southern California is the small town of ojai. About 12 miles inland from Ventura, ojai is the smallest city in Ventura County, and we are darn proud of it. ojai’s charms are many. The community has long been known as a haven for artists, musicians and health enthusiasts. A village ”as we locals call it” of about 8,000, ojai is a vibrant place with so much natural beauty that it gained fame decades ago when the area was photographed to represent Shangri-La in the 1939 movie, The Lost Horizon. Filled with delightful shops, art galleries and a host of places to retreat from the fast-paced lifestyle that can knot the nerves, ojai invites you to walk its oak-shaded paths taking some time to drink in the serenity of it all. The Chumash Indians are the first known residents of Ojai, and it is from their word ‘âhwaiâ’ meaning ‘moon’ that the name ojai is derived. one of the oldest towns in Ventura County, ojai was settled in the 1800s and incorporated as a city in 1921. nestled in the ojai Valley, the town is surrounded by peaks that give off a glow in the evening light known asthe pink moment.” This will be our itinerary:on Wednesday, April 11, my friend, Lois Fishman (the founding owner of Sitting Pretty) and I will be driving up the 101 Freeway from the San Fernando Valley where we both live to Highway 33 north to ojai early in the day. We love going to thrift shops and second-hand stores and I found four in ojai that we can explore. We’ll check into our hotel, The oaks At ojai. other writers will be staying at The Lavender Inn.In the early evening we will attend a fitness class at The Oaks At Ojai. We’ll meet famous fitness guru Sheila Cluff, who will provide us with a brief history of The Oaks at Ojai followed by a mini-fitness class focusing on her book, “Sit, Stretch & Strengthen.” I’m anxious to try this class. Later we will be picked up for our evening reception and dinner at the Azu Restaurant & Tapas Bar.on Thursday, April 12, we’ll start the morning with breakfast at The Lavender Inn. From

10:30 am we will take an “Eating ojai Food Tour.” The schedule calls for us to stroll through ojai Village and visit six locations for tastings and conversations with the chefs and the business owners. The schedule, tentatively, calls for us to visit La Fuente gourmet Tamales, ojai Coffee Roasting Company, Los Caporales, ojai Beverage Company and The Knead Baking Company. At 3:00 pm the writers have three activities we can choose from, or we can explore ojai Village on our own. We were offered the following: a one-hour Horseback Ride through the Ventura River Preserve with Debbie Fox of Ojai On Horseback as guide; a visit to the Ojai Valley Museum Of History & Art with tour guide David Mason; a Spa Treatment, with a choice of a Tangerine Lemongrass Body Scrub or Massage utilizing tangerine oil. Lois and I have opted for this choice. After this we’ll stroll to the Casa Barranca Wine Tasting Room at the ojai Arcade for a wine tasting, then meander to the Feast Bistro for our dinner prepared by Chef Susan Coulteron Friday, April 13, our day will begin with breakfast at the Lavender Inn. During the morning we will visit the Churchill orchard where we’ll learn about the popular ojai Pixies and try a sample! Then, it’s off to El Paca Pastures to learn about the Alpacas at this working ranch in ojai Valley. We’ll have lunch at Papa Lennon’s Pizzeria and, sadly, our tour will conclude shortly after that.Sounds great, doesn’t it? For more information about ojai go to www.ojaivisitorsbureau.com. I’ll also be writing a detailed story about what I saw and did next week.

Feuer leGislation CoMBats neiGhBorhooD BliGht CauseD By lenDer-oWneD hoMes

SACRAMEnTo, CA -- Assembly Member Mike Feuer (D-Los Angeles) has introduced legislation that would combat neighborhood blight caused when foreclosed homes are not maintained, driving down nearby property values and increasing criminal activity. AB 2557 would allow neighbors of lender-owned vacant properties to obtain a court order to force the lender to fix up blighted property. The measure also allows large cities to more easily require

lenders to maintain their blighted properties.“It is tough enough for families to see the value of their homes plunge because of the ongoing real estate slump. But it is unfair when the reason for the diminishing value is because a nearby lender-owned property isn’t maintained,” said Feuer. “This bill gives neighbors the power to take action when lenders refuse to maintain a foreclosed property hurting the community.”AB 2557 allows the owner of a residential property adjacent to a vacant foreclosed residential property to bring legal action against the lender neglecting the property, forcing the lender to maintain it. The measure creates incentives for lenders to ensure that their properties are properly maintained, putting a stop to slides in neighboring real estate value, deterring crime, and taking pressure off local governments. In addition, the bill helps large cities more efficiently use their existing authority to force the maintenance of blighted properties through court-ordered receiverships.“Blighted properties continue to depress property values, are known to attract illegal activity, and place an increased stress on City services,” said Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen A. Trutanich. “The simple fix addressed in this legislation will help us combat the serious consequences of neighborhood blight by allowing large cities, like Los Angeles, to better utilize their existing authority in order to get these properties cleaned-up in the most efficient manner.”

There are currently more than 204,044 credit union members in California’s 27th Congressional district, which is represented by Rep. Sherman. The bill would enhance credit unions’ ability to serve their members and promote the safety and soundness of the credit union system. The bill would expand the availability of affordable credit, benefit the economic recovery, and facilitate job growth.H.R. 3993 is a priority for consumers, credit unions, and should be a priority for all Members of Congress who are concerned about expanding access to affordable financial services and strengthening the nation’s economic recovery.Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that serve more than 90 million Americans. BerMan leaDs eFFort urGinG DeFense seCretary to preserVe l.a. Bases in ConsoliDation

VAn nUYS, CA -- Last week, Congressman Howard L. Berman urged Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta to preserve the Los Angeles Air Force Base (LAAFB) and its Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) as his Department initiated an effort to consolidate our defense infrastructure. Joined by Representatives Henry Waxman and Janice Hahn, Berman sent a letter to Secretary Panetta highlighting the strategic and economic importance of the Los Angeles County bases following his request that Congress begin a new round of military base realignments.“In light of the Defense Department’s request for a new round of military base realignments beginning in FY 2013, we write to strongly urge that the Los Angeles Air Force Base (LAAFB) and its Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) be retained without any reductions,” wrote Berman, Waxman and Hahn in their letter.“While California has long been a leader in aerospace, a major factor for its continued presence in the state is LAAFB and SMC and the $9 billion in annual contracts issued for space and missile requirements of the Department,” the letter continued. “As you weigh the further consolidation of our defense infrastructure, I urge you to carefully consider the important national security mission of LAAFB and its SMC, as well as the thousands of workers whose jobs are tied to these facilities through our aerospace companies.”The Pentagon’s proposed base realignment and closure rounds for 2013 and 2015 would follow the same process as past rounds according to draft legislation recently sent to Congress by the Defense Department. The 37-page legislative proposal signals that the Pentagon wants the next round of military base realignment and closures, or BRAC, to model the process of the ones that took place during the 1990s, and more recently in 2005. If adopted, the Pentagon would release its list of proposed closures and realignments for the first of the two rounds by May 17, 2013. The plan would be reviewed by a nine-member BRAC panel — nominated by the president with input from congressional leaders and confirmed by the Senate — that would then submit its own final report to the White House by Oct. 1. Full text of the letter is below:

The Honorable Leon PanettaSecretary of DefenseThe Pentagon

Dear Secretary Panetta:

In light of the Defense Department’s request for a new round of military base realignments beginning in FY 2013, we write to strongly urge that the Los Angeles Air Force Base (LAAFB) and its Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) be retained without any reductions. California is home to fully half of the nation’s aerospace sector and one-quarter of the global aerospace industry. A majority of state’s aerospace industry is located in Los Angeles County, where hundreds of companies – from large aerospace firms to small machine shops -- have attracted a highly-educated and specialized workforce, comprising about 250,000 people. While California has long been a leader in aerospace, a major factor for its continued presence in the state is LAAFB and SMC and the $9 billion in annual contracts issued for space and missile requirements of the Department and other federal agencies. The economic reach of LAAFB and SMC extends throughout the Los Angeles area, including the San Fernando Valley, and to other parts of Southern California.one of SMC’s critical missions is to manage the development and launch of satellites for a variety of national security programs. To perform that mission, it is vital that SMC remain in close proximity to other federal aerospace facilities, including the launch facilities at Vandenberg Air Force Base and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, as well as to the industrial and scientific infrastructure and workforce that are specifically configured to support the Center’s critical national security role.As you weigh the further consolidation of our defense infrastructure, I urge you to carefully consider the important national security mission of LAAFB and its SMC, as well as the thousands of workers whose jobs are tied to these facilities through our aerospace companies. I look forward to discussing this critically important matter with you.

Sincerely,

Howard L. Berman, Henry A. Waxman, Janice Hahn

Earth Day facts:~ Earth Day first began on April 22, 1970, when 20 million people across the country participated in rallies.~ By the end of 1970, the U.S. saw some of its first major political efforts to protect the environment, including the founding of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). ~ Within five years of the first Earth Day, the EPA had banned the insecticide DDT and Congress passed the Safe Drinking Water Act and set emissions and efficiency standards for vehicles.~ Senator gaylord nelson, a Democrat from Wisconsin, came up with the idea for Earth Day in 1969. Inspired by the anti-Vietnam War “teach-ins” that took place at college campuses all over the nation, nelson envisioned a large-scale environmental demonstration that would catch the attention of the federal government.~ nelson was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his role as founder of Earth Day. Along with Harvard student Denis Hayes, nelson went on to found the Earth Day network.~ By 1990, Earth Day was celebrated across the globe by 200 million people.~ In 2009, the United nations designated April 22 to be International Mother Earth Day.~ More than 94 million people have pledged “Acts of green” through the Earth Day network.~ Many cities have turned Earth Day into a week-long celebration with events that educate children about the environment and encourage greater participation in green causes.

The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.” -- John Muir~ “Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life.” -- Rachel Carson~ “No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth, and no culture comparable to that of the garden.” -- Thomas Jefferson~ “After a visit to the beach, it’s hard to believe that we live in a material world.” -- Pam Shaw

DELILaH DoB: 02/14/2010BREED: Female, Doberman blendWEIgHT: 38 lbs.Hey there, I’m Delilah! They say I’m a Doby mix, but I’m not all that big -- a nice mid-sized dog. And did you see my beautiful blue gray color? Pretty spectacular, right? Even my nose is gray! I’m a sweet, friendly, playful girl who just needs the right family to come and adopt me and take me home so we can make beautiful music together forever.

RITa DoB: 11/02/2011BREED: Female, DSH, Brown/Tan/BlackWEIgHT: 6 lbs.Children (8 years and up)I’m a sweet kitten who’s rather unsure of facing the big, bad world out there without the comfort and protection of my mom. If I can just find a special human to love, then I’m certain I can become the confident, outgoing girl I’m meant to be!
