Festival de Música de DeiàEvery Thursday | Cada Jueves @ 21.00

> Camerata Deià was formed by a group of musicians that met at the Adriatic Chamber Music Festival at the University of California. After being invited to participate in the Deià festival on several occasions, the group eventually became the ensemble in residence, under the artistic direction of Alfredo Oyaguez Montero and co-artistic director Patrick Meadows. The ensemble, made up of seven musicians from dif-ferent countries, will present two performances during the month of July (2nd and 9th). See the inside calendar for information on other performances during the month.

> Camerata Deià fue formado por un grupo de músicos que coincidie-ron en el Festival Adriático de Música en la Universidad de California. Después de haber sido invitados a participar en el Festival de Deià en varias ocasiones, el grupo finalmente se convirtió en el conjunto residente, bajo la dirección artística de Alfredo Montero Oyaguez y el co-director artístico Patrick Meadows. Formado por siete músicos de diferentes países, presentarán dos espectáculos durante el mes de julio (2 y 9). Festival de Música de Pollença3, 11 & 17 July (Julio) @ 22.00

> The 48th year of the festival once again brings some an eclectic mix of talented musicians to the island. July brings you 3 diverse, yet equally impressive performances. The festival kicks off on the 3rd with one of the most important figures of Spanish popular music, Joan Manual Serrat. On the 11th, Tony Hadley, former lead-singer of Spandau Ballet, joins the Barcelona Jazz Orquestra. And finally, the famous Spanish Romani Flamenco singer Diego “El Cigala” will per-form on the 17th. All performances take place in the stunning 17th century Claustre Sant Domingo with exceptional acoustics.

Qué pasa ... Julio

> 8 groups from Mallorca, 1 from Girona, Rayuela Dj’s and the poet-presenter Emili Sánchez have teamed up to raise money for a charity program which aims to help immigrants living on the island – teaching them the language and a trade that will enable them to integrate and have a descent life in Mallorca. Each group will play 30 minutes and between sets, Rayuela Dj’s will play, fol-lowed by Emili presenting the next act. Although the first year of the festival, the hope is to return again next year with new groups…spreading the word and cause regionally, nationally or even internationally! > Ocho grupos de Mallorca, 1 de Girona, Rayuela Dj’s y el poeta-presentador Emili Sánchez se han unido para recolectar fondos con el objetivo ayudar a inmigrantes residentes en la isla – enseñán-doles el idioma y un oficio para que así puedan integrarse y llevar una vida decente en Mallorca. Cada banda tocará durante 30 mi-nutos y entre ellas, Rayuela Dj’s se harán cargo, seguido por Emili que presentará el siguiente acto. Aunque sea el primer año de este festival, la esperanza es que el año que viene pueda regresar con más grupos… extendiendo la información para transformarlo en un festival regional, nacional e incluso internacional!

> Since 2004, Eurooclàssics has organized 22 productions of Carmina Burana on the Mallorca stages – each met with great success. Carl Orff´s Carmina Burana is a powerful piece of 20th century music that introduces all to the world of classical music. The world premiere in 1937 Germany was a tremendous hit that spread across opera hous-es becoming an international triumph. A collection of songs about wine, women and love, based on poems in Latin, German and French from a manuscript dated 1280 found in the Benedictine monastery of Beuren. Under the direction of Fernando Marina, two pianos, percussion, choir, soloists and 100 musicians take the stage. > Desde 2004, Euroclàssics ha organizado 22 producciones de Car-mina Burana sobre los escenarios de Mallorca – todas con éxito. La de Carl Orff es una pieza increíble de la música clásica del siglo XX. En 1937 fue el estreno mundial en Alemania y se convirtió en un triunfo internacional en los teatros de ópera. > A day of open air Hip Hop will bring together a mix of top Spanish groups. Falsalarma, the ensemble from Barcelona returns to the island again to present their latest album “Law of Life”. Known for their impeccable live performances and longevity in the limelight of the hip hop world. At the afternoon will bring performances by a number of local groups including JP´s, Snas, Nowis, Estadokritico, Naste and Los Primos. Also during the jour-ney people will be able to participate in a music production work-shop with a special performance by DJ Size.

> The Western swing trio formed in 1990 and has grown into a formi-dable international sensation – touring relentlessly over the years, participating in a number of international festivals, alongside the release of 6 critically acclaimed CDs. After a 2 year split, the group was back together in 2008, and their latest CD “Wishful Thinking” (released May 4th, 2009) is the result. Their roots of hot jazz, Amer-ican music, vintage pop and folk continue to unfold and evolve into their unique sound. Over the past year they have shared the stage with Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, the Mavericks and others.

He kicked off the Spanish portion of his tour in his home town of Linares, and has marked Palma´s Plaza de Toros as his 8th stop. > Schink was born in 1961 in Erfurt and studied photography at the School of Graphic Design in Leipzig. A central point of his work is the dialogue between nature and civilization. > At the early age of 14 she began to paint and has continued

ever since, having realized a number of diverse exhibitions during

the past years. She studied illustration in the School of Design

in Palma and currently resides in Barcelona where she continues

to study “Applied Arts of Mural Design”, touching on a number

of fields including ceramics, stained glass, mosaic and the evolu-

tion of painting. “It is difficult to define exactly my work at the

moment, because I am still looking. I paint according to my state

of mind but also I am capable of illustrating something concrete

leaving the feelings aside.” Her major influences have been graf

fiti, graphic design, tattoo and comics, basing her art on personal

emotions, dreams, human expressions and surreal environments.

Through her work, her goal is to try and convey something that

will make the spectator tremble. For which she succeeds. Leading

us to a world of contrasts, absurdities and images loaded with

symbolism. For her the important thing is that it leaves the inte-

rior. “Many times you take leave and let yourself flow, it´s funny

because you never know until that point and you can surprise

yourself. Creating is one of the greatest pleasures, where art be-

comes a necessity, like eating or sleeping.”

> A la temprana edad de 14 años comenzó a pintar y desde enton-

ces no ha dejado de hacerlo, habiendo realizado diversas exposicio-

nes durante estos últimos años. Estudió ilustración en la Escuela

Superior de Diseño en Palma y actualmente reside en Barcelona

donde continúa estudiando “Artes aplicadas al Muro”, palpando

toda serie de campos, como; la cerámica, vitrales, mosaico y sobre

todo evolucionando en la pintura. “Definir exactamente mi obra en

estos momentos…pues aún sigo buscando, pinto según mi estado

de ánimo pero también soy capaz de ilustrar algo concreto dejando

aparte los sentimientos.” Sus mayores influencias han sido el

grafiti, el diseño gráfico, el tatuaje y el cómic, basando su arte en

emociones personales, los sueños, la expresión del ser humano y

ambientes surrealistas. A través de su obra, su objetivo; intentar

transmitir algo que haga vibrar al espectador. Y lo consigue. Lle-

vándonos a un mundo urbano cubierto de contrastes, lo absurdo

e imágenes cargadas de motivos llenos de simbología. Para ella lo

importante es que salga del interior – “Muchas de las veces que

te dejas llevar, es curioso, porque nunca sabes hasta que punto

puedes sorprenderte de ti mismo. Crear es uno de los mayores

placeres, donde el arte se transforma en una necesidad, como el

comer o el dormir.”

The Marzipan Man

> The Spanish singer-songwriter Jordi Herrera, who is also the

lead singer and guitarist of the band Satellites, has an alter ego

– the Marzipan Man.

…An imaginary character that lives somewhere in a damp forest

in Southwestern England under the roots of a big tree which

he shares with two rabbits. He rarely goes out and from his

hiding place tirelessly writes stories and keeps in contact with

the outside world through sending letters…

His stories have come to life through music in the 1st album

“Marzipan Man Stories” which was printed in May 2007. The

stories are not only a record, but a book, a play and a cartoon all

in one – with its music, lyrics and drawings. The majority of the

Marzipan stories were recorded, played, produced and mixed by

Herrera. However when performing the magical, evocative songs

live, he prefers to be surrounded by friends and instrumental

formations usually including pianos, harps, percussions, violins

and sweet vocals.

Get lost in the stories of the Marzipan Man on July 3rd, when

he will perform as part of the solidarity festival Son Damento

Rock.

> El cantautor español Jordi Herrera, también cantante líder y

guitarrista de la reconocida banda Satellites, posee un alter ego

– The Marzipan Man.

…Un personaje imaginario que reside en algún rincón de un

íntimo bosque al suroeste de Inglaterra bajo las raíces de un

gran árbol, el cual comparte con dos conejos. Raras veces sale

al exterior y desde su escondite escribe historias sin parar

manteniendo el contacto con el exterior mediante el envío de

cartas…

Sus historias se han hecho realidad a través del primer álbum

“Marzipan Man Stories” lanzado en mayo del 2007. Las historias

no sólo son una grabación, sino un libro, una obra y un dibujo

animado, todo en uno –con su música, letras y dibujos. La

mayoría de las historias de Marzipan Man han sido grabadas,

tocadas, producidas y mezclados por Herrera. Sin embargo

realizando estas mágicas canciones, evocadoramente vivas,

prefiere estar rodeado por amigos y formaciones instrumentales,

por lo general incluyendo piano, arpas, percusiones, violines y

dulces tonos de voz.

Adéntrate en sus historias el próximo 3 de julio, cuando se dejará

ver en la actuación del Festival Son Dameto Rock.
