How to market content

Content Providers create contents for own use, e.g. on websites B-2-C, or adapt contents for other providers (B-2-B).

Content providers / Service Centres receive contents by order from customers (e.g. map updates) in order to play-out updates to certain user groups.

Contents are launched for free (with or w/o advertising), pay per download, subscription based (B-2-C) or for closed user groups (B-2-B).

How content download into cars will evolve

Terrestrial mobile networks like GPRS and UMTS are limited to country borders and require large efforts for roaming, simultaneity and subscriber tracking.Future mobile vehicle applications need secure, Europe wide and simultaneous update procedures required by different sources: Car manufacturers, navigation- system- and digital map providers as well as global digital broadcasters.Feasibility of IP based satellite broadcasting is still approved and large download capacities are available.A back-channel, if required, can be established throughout terrestrial- or satellite networks.Further mobile vehicle applications and integration into in-vehicle devices need to be defined and implemented.Satellite broadcasting of IP based contents seems to evolve to an excellent alternative to existing mobile in-vehicle applications.

Number of on-board features grew enormously within the past 10 years. Thus complexity increased accordingly with negative impacts on quality and costs

Successful market penetration of features that provide added value to the core product requires volume.

The right system architecture is crucial in order to minimize costs. Standards are required.

The utilisation of satellites for the purpose of land-mobile applications remains a valuable alternative and could leverage the introduction of “on-demand-features” and software downloads generally.

Innovate or die – but innovate on a sound basis regarding the economics
