Garbage clearance through

battery run vehicles

It is a laudable proposition thatPallavaram Municipality becomes the firstone in introducing the novel method ofgarbage collections by battery run cars inthe state. As of now, only one vehicle isin operation in a single area each day.

The vehicle is on a pilot basis. It seemsthat there are 3 compartments in thevehicle for assortment of biodegradable,non-degradable and medical waste etc.The scavenger collects around one andhalf tonnes of garbagefrom 1500households in one ward alone. The batteryoperated vehicle has been in operation for the past one fortnightonly.

The Commissioner of Pallavaram Municipality has saidthat the scheme is successful. The Municipality is planning topurchase 42 more such vehicles. Earlier, the pushcarts were usedto collect garbage twice a day. Now, the vehicle shuttles rounds6 times a day. The Municipality serves over 6000 households inits limits.

The garbage collection through pedalingthe tricycle, becomesmore arduous due to heavy collection of trash. And the scavengersuffers severe body pain and frequently absents himself due tosickness. Since the vehicle has tubeless tyres, there is no questionof puncturing that wont affect the garbage clearance also. It willbecome an added feather in the cap that in future, there will belesser labour force in the country to carry out this painful exercise.

The cost of maintenance will not be much more compared tothe present practice. More such vehicles can be used for easyclearance of garbage which will be quick and less time consuming.It will definitely quicken the pace of keeping clean, pollution freeenvironment. The Chennai Corporation should also prude over toimplement the above scheme through battery run garbage carswhich is very easy to handle and can easily enter any locality,even small lanes. There will also be lesser labour force requirementto take care of clearances.

The service will be quicker. When vey many countries theworld use this battery operated cars to clear garbage, we arelagging behind to introduce such methods. Why not ChennaiCorporation introduce this novel method of garbage collection tokeep Chennai city clean and pollution free?
