hriving for 100 years has been a tremendous accomplishment for the Greater Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce. It has been a year of both celebration and reflection on the history of the organization and its members. Yet much of the reason for the Chamber’s century of success stems from the fact that the organization is always looking forward — always thinking of new ways to serve. “We’re just getting started!” says Rex Richards, Valpo Chamber President.

What’s next? Take a look at the future through the eyes of community leaders who represent many pillars of the community the Chamber serves. Here’s to the next century and beyond!

HealtHcareporter regional hospital’s innovative new facility, located at 85 east Us highway 6, is perhaps one of the most dynamic symbols of the future in our area. The much-awaited new regional hospital is celebrated for its state-of-the-art technology as well as its commitment to patient-centered care. “We’ve designed the space to promote healing in a warm and efficient way,” says Jonathan nalli, Ceo for porter health Care system.

solid research in best practice medicine that promotes optimal healing drove the layout and design of the new facility. even the physical location of the building was positioned to maximize natural sunlight throughout the day and enhance the scenic views from the all-private patient rooms, says nalli. “although the new hospital is more than

double the size of our previous facility it was built to emphasize efficiency and is much easier to navigate for both patients and staff, allowing for fewer steps, easier access, and faster service,” says nalli.

“if you look at our new emergency Department,” he adds, “you see that it has all the ancillary services to handle trauma and illness within close proximity. We can deliver care quicker so you can get back to enjoying your life.”

“healthcare and medical technology continue to evolve,” says nalli. “evidence shows that advanced technology benefits patient outcomes, and we’ve made the commitment to technology and medical advancements by investing in new equipment.”

“at porter, our job goes beyond providing care. We’re dedicated to being leaders in educating the community and promoting healthy living,” he says. porter offers many educational services and also partners with Valparaiso to promote the city’s fit City initiative. Through fit City, >>

“The Chamber has always been a strong partner, serving like a glue that connects us to other businesses and services. Communities don’t run well without a great chamber and we’re fortunate in Valparaiso to have a great chamber,” says nalli.

Manufacturing & industrial sector “now more than ever this country needs a spirit of entrepreneurship and wealth creation. The good news is that is just what the Chamber advocates,” says Ken bartelt, president of powder process & Technology, llC. The company, located at 5103 evans avenue, is a custom processor of ceramic materials, serving the

energy industry – both traditional and new sustainable energy, and other industrial applications for advanced materials.

Valparaiso businesses are poised to continue their successes into the coming decades. “More and more companies are seeing the wisdom of manufacturing here in the U.s., bringing back what they once sent to China. There’s the potential for more and more manufacturing to

return to indiana, porter County and Valparaiso,” says Martin sonnenberg, executive Vice president and Chief financial officer for Task force Tips, headquartered at 3701 innovation Way, a worldwide leader in the production of innovative firefighting equipment. “

Many benefits make Valparaiso attractive for business and the Valpo Chamber is a leader in highlighting these positives for economic development, say bartelt and sonnenberg. “We’re well situated, close to Chicago, along major trade routes. We have an employee base of hard workers, plus indiana has its financial ducks in a row, which is a big positive,” says sonnenberg.

“Manufacturing is key to the success of a community, because it can provide good, well-paying jobs and a strong tax base, which are essential for a community to move forward,” says bartelt. sonnenberg adds, “The Chamber is a great advocate, both locally and around the state, for jobs of all kinds, including manufacturing. i believe the Chamber is a great place for people to make contacts with people they can help and people who can help them. getting involved in the Chamber is one of the best ways to become part of the fabric of our community,” he says.

retailing“if the future strategy is parallel to what has created the miracle of the Valparaiso downtown, then the future of retailing is very bright for our community,” says gus olympidis, president and Ceo of family express Corporation, headquartered at 213 south state road 49. Donna phelps, owner of seasons on the square, one lincolnway, agrees. her downtown store has been the site of a woman’s clothing boutique for more than 100 years – even longer than the Chamber’s existence. “Thanks to a vibrant downtown and a phenomenal staff, our store has been gangbusters this year,” phelps says.

“not long ago the question in Valpo was ‘how do we revitalize the downtown and deal with vacancies?’ now we see an environment where the problem is

‘Where do i park?’” says olympidis. “and retail is squarely in the middle of that prosperity. Yet, we’re mindful of its portability,” he says. >>

Valparaiso Magazine | fall 2012

>> “as futurist Joel barker says, ‘our past successes will guarantee nothing in the future.’ We must continue to learn and listen to stay ahead,” he said. both family express and seasons on the square stay ahead of the market by continuing to learn what their customers want and how to use the tools at hand. one tool is social media.

“in the old days your reputation would be predicated on your customers, your neighbors, and your friends asserting their point of view. Today the same thing is going on, but with social media, the neighborhood has bloomed from dozens to thousands…potentially tens of thousands,” says olympidis.

To stay ahead, family express is investing in best-in-class training in social media. phelps continues to learn too, attending frequent markets and retreats to gather ideas and products to share with Valparaiso customers. “The Chamber is an advocate for the business community,” says olympidis.

“We receive added exposure through the Chamber — through its advocacy, referrals, networking, and programs, like the gift certificate program. Just like we offer personalized attention, we appreciate that sort of attention from the Chamber,” phelps adds.

nonprofit organizations a strong nonprofit network provides a safety net for the community and also works to enrich people’s lives, according to sharon Kish, president of the United Way of porter County, located at 951 eastport Centre Drive. “people often need nonprofits at different stages of their lives -- from prenatal to end of life, like hospice,” she says.

8

Page 9: Valparaiso Magazine

“The Chamber helps the nonprofit community by enhancing our collective business skills. nonprofit organizations must be run like efficient businesses if they’re going to continue to be a resource,” says barbara Young, president of the porter County Community foundation, 57 franklin street, suite 207.

“We’re focused on helping all nonprofit organizations to excel by adopting best business practices and implementing outcome driven programs so that we can all do the most for our community,” says Young.

“at least in the foreseeable future, federal help for nonprofits is going to continue to diminish, which means we all have to work smarter, harder and more collaboratively. by working together, we can better align resources and serve more people. The Chamber helps by bringing people together,” says Kish. nonprofit organizations also appreciate the Chamber’s role in fostering good corporate citizenship.

“businesses can make a big difference by contributing financially, offering matching funds, and encouraging their employees to serve as volunteers,” says Young. The Chamber is also helping to build the future of nonprofits by engaging young people in volunteerism. “as young people get involved as volunteers, they become donors and then become board members. Through opportunities like the Chamber’s leadership academy, we’re encouraged that our community will continue to be supportive of nonprofit organizations, for years to come,” says Kish.

tecHnology Much has changed in the world of technology since the Chamber was founded in 1912. back then, offices used typewriters and they still had the symbol for cents on the keyboard! but today we talk of things like cloud computing, and virtualization as critical business needs.

“businesses become concerned with safety when they send data off to the ‘cloud,’ because they don’t know exactly where it’s going,” says rich shields, business Development Manager at Chester, inc.

information Technologies located at 555 eastport Centre Drive. “There are ways to make data safer. We used to worry about giving our credit card numbers online, but now it’s probably safer than using paper, which can be scavenged when it’s discarded,” he says. >>

>> so much has changed. Today, high speed, quality bandwidth has become a vital part of the infrastructure needed to attract and keep employers in any progressive community.

“With the ever increasing dependence on ’the cloud’ for our personal and professional lives, it is no longer a question of ‘Do we need internet bandwidth?’ but ‘how much can we get?’ and ‘What is the quality of service?’” says Mike heinold, founding partner with iDDea group, an iT consulting firm located at 470 Vale park road, suite 200, focused on virtual infrastructure and private cloud computing.

The Chamber plays a critical role in the economic development of the community by advocating the quality technology infrastructure necessary to continue attracting quality businesses, says shields.

“The many opportunities for interaction and the creation of awareness just would not happen without the efforts of a well-managed Chamber like we have here in Valparaiso,” says heinold.

“The Chamber does a great job of bringing people in and bringing people together,” he says.

city of Valparaiso“We’re always looking for ways to improve Valparaiso. This year we have 40 projects on our construction schedule and i only see that increasing in the future,” says Tim burkman, the city’s engineering Director.

“We continue to have big plans,” says Tyler Kent, planning Director. “We’re working to prepare shovel-ready sites ready to welcome new companies to the city,” says Kent. public transportation is another long-term project. “We’ll be adding a fourth bus to the Chicago Dash soon and studying the in-town routes for the V-line to plan for the next decades,” he says.

We’re ‘all hands on deck’ in preparing

for the future. - Tyler Kent, Planning Director

“ “

Page 11: Valparaiso Magazine

“The upcoming Us 30 corridor project will be one of the biggest projects the city has ever seen,” says burkman.

The $24 million grant-funded project will make the Us 30 corridor more efficient, safer and more attractive, including things such as a grade separated pedestrian crossing, way-finding signage and improved aesthetics. “Us 30 is one of the final frontiers in Valpo in that it’s one of the few areas that has been relatively untouched by improvements so far. We’re eager to put our thumb print on that section and make it reflect what we’re known for in our city,” says burkman.

“We’re ‘all hands on deck’ in preparing for the future,” says Kent. “We value our relationship with the Chamber as that connection gives us another way to interact with local businesses and residents. We welcome the feedback so we can continue moving together,” he says.

educationhigher education evolves as students need different skills to compete in a global economy.

“We’re seeing a more diverse student population. More adults are returning to higher education and we’re pleased to welcome more students from traditionally under-represented groups,” says Dr. Mark heckler, president of Valparaiso University, 1700 Chapel Drive. “Using technology, we’re also seeing changes in how education is delivered. We have Mba students participating in live and interactive classrooms from all over the world,” he says.

“it’s pretty clear that the road to future success is either higher education or at least the 21st century skills that are so crucial for making people marketable,” says Dr. James b. Dworkin, Chancellor at purdue University north Central. purdue’s porter County facility is located at 600 Vale park road.

he cites a recent study by georgetown University, which revealed that during the recent recession, four out of five jobs lost had been held by lesser educated workers – those without post-secondary education. “The best investment you can make in yourself is still a college degree,” Dworkin adds.

To better prepare the workforce, pnC is partnering with local companies to offer programs that provide relevant job skills. “We’re also working on concurrent programs where high school students can begin earning college credits even before they receive their high school diploma,” he says. >>

““

>> The Chamber plays an active role in building these kinds of partnerships, which build a better community, agree heckler and Dworkin.

“The Chamber brings us together to learn from each other, to share ideas and to succeed socially and economically,” says heckler. “Together we can assess our common needs and develop plans to address them.”

Banking“for those banks that have made good lending decisions and survived these recent economic challenges, the future is very good,” says Dave rose, president, northwest indiana for horizon bank, 4208 north Calumet avenue.

Yet rose predicts that changes in banking and the marketplace will lead to more consolidations in the future. “it’s expected that in the next five years, we’ll see a 20 percent reduction in the number of banks, due to consolidation,” he says.

another trend in banking is an increase in the use of technology. “from online banking and statements, to the ability to access your accounts from your phone and the internet, everything is becoming faster,” says laura Campbell, Community Coordinator for Centier bank, 150 West lincolnway. “Clients expect the best accuracy at the quickest pace,” she says.

Yet neither Campbell nor rose think the computer will replace personal banking. “scanning checks is simply a transaction, but planning your financial future takes a little more expertise. our clients appreciate personal service and having local bankers they know and trust,” says rose.

The local banking industry has a history of being very supportive of community activities, including the Chamber, providing financial support as well as “people resources” to community organizations.

“We support the role of the Chamber in supporting growth and sustaining existing businesses. as a banking organization, we’re involved in many communities, but we see very few chambers with 600 to 700 members. The Valpo Chamber is strong and helps put the community on the map,” says rose. Campbell agrees. “it’s pretty amazing to see the number of businesses involved with the Chamber. being involved is great visibility,” she says. VM

alparaiso has thrived because of the continuing leadership of exceptional people in our community who always rise to

the occasion to make Valparaiso an exciting place to live, work, and play. These emerging leaders are proof positive

that the future is bright for Valparaiso.

RENEE GLuTH, Citizens financial bank

being employed by the same company for more than a year or two is quickly becoming a rarity, but renee gluth is a refreshing example of the satisfaction that comes from working your way up in a company you believe in.

gluth began her career at Citizens financial bank 12 years ago as a teller while she was still in college. after graduation, she joined the bank full time and has worked there ever since, earning promotions along the way. Today, she is assistant banking Center Manager.

While the responsibilities have changed along the way, gluth’s commitment to helping customers make financial decisions has remained a constant.

“The struggle in my industry is helping people make ends meet,” gluth says. “The down economy has hit so many people. it’s very satisfying to know that you can help guide them.”

gluth has also taken on leadership positions in the community with organizations such as housing opportunities (ho). gluth serves on the board of directors at ho and serves as co-chair of the organization’s Due-Diligence Committee. she also works on friends assisting Women in need (faWn), a fundraising event for housing opportunities. at the Chamber, gluth chairs the ambassador Committee and is a graduate of the 2011 Valpo Chamber leadership academy, a four-month community leadership program.

“When it comes time for the more seasoned community leaders to pass those roles down to younger people, we’ll lose something really important if we don’t have new leaders who are grabbing the bull by the horns,” gluth

says. “You can’t just sit back and wait for someone else to do something you want to happen. You have to take control and do it.”

ETHAN LOWE, blachly Tabor bozik & hartman, llC

from an early age, ethan lowe knew he wanted to be a lawyer. he chose to focus on municipal law because of the positive impact he could have on community life. he joined blachly Tabor bozik & hartman in 2007.

“i’ve been very blessed to have the tremendous opportunity to work for and with leaders in the community who i’ve been able to look to for guidance,” lowe says. “i find my job very challenging, and those challenges change from day to day, even from hour to hour sometimes. but i’ve gotten a lot of hands-on experience with a lot of leaders in the community who i’ve learned from.”

lowe enjoys linking his talents to the community he cares about. While providing legal guidance to city groups such as town councils, boards of directors, and mayors, he has the unique opportunity to apply his skills to projects that ultimately contribute to community improvement. one such project was serving as a legal advisor in the addition of >>

lowe is currently president of porter County aging and Community services, inc. and a member of its board of directors. in the past, he has also served on the board for family house.

lowe hopes to expand his work in youth leadership programs. he is a graduate of the 2007 Valpo Chamber leadership academy and is currently enrolled in leadership northwest indiana. “i want to become a leader like those i look up to right now in the community,” lowe says. “i want to continue to become more involved in leadership training and guiding other young professionals in their development.”

DOuG KLEMZ, home Mountain printing

Doug Klemz has worked and lived all over the United states. but when the opportunity came to move back to his hometown of Valparaiso and work alongside family at home Mountain printing, he couldn’t resist the opportunity.

“i hit a certain point career-wise when family and community became very important,” Klemz says. “My dad was trying to decide how to handle the business. he knew he needed help to take the business to the next level. i was ready, too, to make a career change.”

Though he now serves as general Manager of home Mountain, Klemz started his adult life as an officer in the United states Marine Corps. after his time in the service, he worked as a manager for a fortune 500 company, but struggled to find the right blend between work and meaningful community involvement. he’s found that blend in Valpo, he says.

Klemz is a 2008 graduate of the Valpo Chamber leadership academy and in addition to his work, he serves on the board for the parks foundation and as scout Master for his son’s boy scout Troop.

“people always talk about networking, but i think your relationships in your career and your community need to dig deeper than that,” Klemz says. “i learned those things while i was an officer in the Marine Corps., and those same things that made a strong Marine officer also make a great fortune 500 employee and a great small business team member. They last. That’s what built Valparaiso, and that’s what makes it strong now.”

ANALISA WARRING, regional federal credit union

analisa Warring was intent on finding a company that could mesh her career goals with her passion for community engagement. she believes she’s found it in regional federal credit union.

“getting into the credit union industry, i found outit’s really about people helping people,” Warring says. “i really felt like i was helping people.

Character counts. Integrity matters. And cultivate meaningful relationships.

That spirit was a turning point for me, to see their encouragement to their employees to be involved in their community.”

Warring has been with regional for five years and currently serves as Vice president of branch Development. but she’s learned much more than the basics of the credit union industry. she learned to build relationships and gain people’s trust and that community involvement doesn’t have to begin after the workday has ended.

as part of regional’s financial education program, Warring travels to local schools to speak to students about money and finances. in addition to her job at regional, she serves as a volunteer and chairs various committees and events at United Way of porter County, the boys & girls Club, the YMCa, the referral organization of indiana (roi) network, and the Valpo Chamber.

“being a younger professional, it does take a lot of time and patience to become involved in the community because you’re starting fresh,” says Warring, who is also a 2009 graduate of the Chamber’s leadership academy.

“it’s made me a better person to have the opportunity to create relationships in the community and work together with the people around me. i want to have a voice for the younger professionals in our area. i want to be at the forefront of the leadership community when it’s time for our seasoned professionals to pass the torch.” VM

Local Treasures Pave the Way to Valparaiso’s Future

Page 21: Valparaiso Magazine

You don’t have to go far to strike gold. from top-notch entertainment to renowned healthcare, local entrepreneurs prove that you don’t have to go to the big city to find big city services and thrills. buying local is simply a wise investment: it keeps Valparaiso from becoming yet another “clone” town, supports innovation and small-business ownership, and keeps more money in the local economy. as Valparaiso looks to the future, these regional choices prove that looking forward means looking local.

Serving up Flavor Carlos rivero, owner of Don Quijote restaurante and imports, 119 east lincolnway, indiana’s first authentic spanish restaurant, knew he’d found an ideal location to open his dream restaurant when he settled in Valparaiso.

“Valparaiso is a wonderful community with a distinctive character that encourages innovative businesses,” he says. “Valparaiso University in particular is a great influence in encouraging and supporting ethnic businesses. The professors who travel a lot were among those who were anxious to sample authentic spanish cuisine.”

since opening its doors in 1985, Don Quijote has cultivated a loyal base of regular customers who come in three to five times a month. “We can provide better service because we get to know our customers,”

says rivero. “They become friends. When it comes to taking care of our customers, our first rule is the golden rule. When they come in, we want them to feel like they’re going to someone’s house.”

Those loyal friends, the restaurant’s tradition of hiring local students, and the support of the community

have helped the restaurant thrive and contribute to Valparaiso’s economy.

“i respect anyone who starts a business, and i appreciate that Valparaiso is so supportive of small business owners. You’re not only taking a risk with your money, you’re taking a risk with your life. Valparaiso is a community that encourages and rewards that risk.”

Producing SuccessCounty line orchard, located at 200 County line road in hobart, draws in thousands of visitors every season, yet it’s as generous with its business as it is with its apples, according to co-owner ryan richardson. “We shop local,” he says.

County line orchard’s new line of jams, sauces, and pickles are made from produce from local farms and through www.grownwi.com, its non-profit organization, itworks with local churches and youth groups by teaching young adults how to grow produce and create products, such as salsa.

“if people start growing more produce and making food products locally, we can stop importing so much,” richardson says.

richardson is also proud of the ripple effect the orchard’s success creates at surrounding businesses. The local fast food restaurant located near County line orchard reports that they add five or more employees per shift during County line orchard’s busy season to serve the added business the orchard generates. “success is contagious like that,” he says. >>

>> Keeping Northwest Indiana Healthy“some people have the misconception that you have to travel to Chicago for top-quality healthcare, and they’re not aware that they have outstanding healthcare right at their doorstep,” says sue gervais, chief operating officer of lakeshore bone and Joint institute (lbJi), 2501 Cumberland avenue.

lbJi uses state-of-the-art equipment, and all of its prominent physicians are board certified specialists. not only do lbJi specialists offer experience, they’re at the forefront of new technology, constantly upgrading their knowledge through continuing education.

“our 170 employees not only support their families, they support the healthcare infrastructure of the region,” says gervais. not only does lbJi provide healthcare services for its patients, its physicians also volunteer in schools throughout porter, lake, and laporte Counties, including Valparaiso University.

“our healthcare team offers patients an unparalleled comfort level because we get to know our patients well and, as a result, we have a high patient retention level,” says gervais. “our doctors and our healthcare team raise their own families in the community, so they have a vested interest in making sure the healthcare needs of the region are taken care of.”

Superior by Design“Valparaiso is an interesting city. it has the intimacy of a smaller town but the sophistication of a big city,” says Valerie steil asiD, president of Marc t. nielsen interiors.

“We are plugged in to the Chicago design community, but we offer a convenience Chicago designers can’t,” says steil. “our clients are very appreciative that we’re only minutes from a meeting in the Valparaiso area.”

Marc t. nielsen interiors, located at 734 old suman road, employs local craftsmen and artists. because they get to know these artisans well, they can better match clients with an artistic team to meet their visions.

Though it’s a local company, steil feels that they bring a bit of the world to Valparaiso through Marc t. nielsen’s antique shop and gallery. “for many of our clients who travel, the items can bring back wonderful memories.”

A Win-Win Attractionseeking the thrill of top-notch gaming and entertainment? Visit nearby blue Chip Casino, hotel and spa in Michigan City.

“We offer the same things as las Vegas without the time and hassles of airline travel,” says Ted bogich, vice president and general manager.

With 1,100 team members from laporte and surrounding indiana counties, as well as southwest Michigan, blue Chip Casino, hotel and spa is one of the biggest employers in the region.

“We are proud to be part of the northwest indiana business community,” says bogich. “it’s encouraging to see businesses and organizations throughout

“You’re not just supporting the business itself when you

buy local, you’re buying a kid’s school supplies and helping to

pay his parents’ mortgage. We live in an interconnected web

and need to live accordingly.” – Valerie steil, Marc t. nielsen interiors

northwest indiana supporting each other and working together for the greater good of this region, regardless of county lines.”

Innovative Entertainment“i started this business because of an innate passion for art and a desire to create it,” says Wade breitzke, owner of 27 entertainment, which offers videography and D.J. services. “it’s also given me the opportunity to recruit and bring on talented people from the region.”

“Valparaiso does an amazing job of supporting

entrepreneurs with its distinct and fun downtown, and by bringing in popular large events which are well-received,” says breitzke. The entertainment-focused business also benefits from working with the many photographers, graphic designers, and premier event facilities that call the region home.

“You don’t have to go to Chicago for top quality,” stresses breitzke. “We have the same or better equipment as big city vendors, but we specialize in extreme detail. it helps that we can interact with local clients face-to-face.”

he adds, “The wonderful thing about this city is that people genuinely want you to succeed. They realize that buying local is more than a feel-good cliché – it’s a winning proposition for everyone.” VM

“It benefits the entire area by strengthening the economy, through higher employment rates to more tax revenue generated for

local governments.” – Ted bogich, blue Chip Casino, hotel and spa

Metro Recycling is proud to support Opportunity Enterprises (OE). Anyone wishing to drop off their paper recycling may do so at Metro Recycling in Valparaiso on behalf of OE. Your donations will be given to OE and their Secure Shred company. Our customers may also donate any or all of their metal recycling proceeds to OE as well.

Scrappy’s Spotlight on RecyclingOver 7 billion pounds of PVC, which includes vinyl siding, are thrown away in the U.S. each year*. Since vinyl siding is not biodegradable, it just sits and takes up space at the landfill or is incinerated, emitting toxins into the environment. Old vinyl siding can be turned into new plastic products such as pipes, fencing, garden hoses and vinyl window products.

Don’t pay someone else to get rid of your vinyl siding! Metro Recycling now accepts vinyl siding. We are dedicated to making it easy for residents of Valparaiso and its surrounding communities to do their part for our planet. * Source: Clean Air Council

Currently, there are many people that believe the future will not be better than the past, and no doubt there are numerous challenges that face us. for generations X and Y, those born from

mid-1960s to the 1990s, the saving and investing landscape will look vastly different from their post World War ii parents. pension plans are becoming a thing of the past, many corporations have scaled back on 401(k) matching, there is plenty of uncertainty surrounding health care, and there is a very real possibility the future of social security will not mirror its past. so, what will the financial future look like?

all of these obstacles point toward one common necessity: retirement and other life goals will be met through individuals and families saving and investing more of their own money and relying less on the benefits stated above. With governments and some corporations unable to fund their “legacy” costs, they will force people to increase personal savings.

While this may seem intimidating at first, it is a tremendous opportunity to take financial matters into your own hands. essentially, it puts you squarely in the forefront of determining your own financial destiny. generations X and Y have seen firsthand their parents’ portfolios diminish in the market meltdowns of the last couple decades and are therefore more cautious. studies show these generations have gotten

a good jump on saving (many beginning saving at 25, instead of age 35, like their boomer parents). They are realizing that revamping the way saving is done doesn’t have to be painful.

What are Gen X and Gen Y’ers most concerned about? According to MFS Market Research: • 61% Inflation• 64% Higher Taxes• 63% Growing Federal Deficit• 56% Home values will show continued weakness• 72% Health care costs• 54% Reduction in Social security benefits• 40% Have concluded “I will never feel comfortable investing in the stock market.”

That said, there are incredible opportunities to save and grow funds, especially with the longer time horizons these generations have. it is important for these investors to maintain a long-term perspective.

Items to consider for successful saving/investing:

1. Create a plan that pursues your long term goals, while remaining flexible to adjust for “life happening.” have a formal plan that allows you to monitor your progress, and can answer the many financial questions that arise over time, like “should i pay off my house early” or “when can i retire if i downsize?”

2. Take advantage of employer-sponsored retirement

plans, contributing at minimum what they will match.

3. Continue investing. growth is a necessity, but have a well-defined strategy.

at The Kotys group, helping clients identify their goals and working closely with them to implement a series of strategies to assist in realizing their unique dreams not only helps clients save and invest more on their own, but encourages them to be creative about retirement.

it is common to find people overwhelmed by the thought of “living someone else’s retirement.” but by asking clients to go through an exercise of envisioning their perfect lifestyle and verbalizing what they really want, which may include a cabin on their favorite fishing lake vs. a condo on the ocean, clients reach a realistic and specific course of action to be mapped out. asking specific questions of yourself leads to what you truly desire, and the possibilities are endless. by following a sound financial plan you can live out what is truly in your dreams. During my tenure on the Chamber board, i have found my interaction to be a dynamic and informative way to become familiar with the Valparaiso Community. as my second year as Treasurer of the Valparaiso Chamber

of Commerce comes to a close, i can reflect that the experience has resulted in a very positive exposure to business and civic leaders not only in Valparaiso but in porter County at large.

This is an extremely philanthropic community

consisting of sophisticated people who prove their commitment to Valparaiso by putting their money where their hearts are.

My Chamber involvement has resulted in front row exposure to some of the most positive events to occur in porter County in decades: Valparaiso was named “Community of the Year” in 2009; the city, through its municipal leadership, has seen infrastructure and “green space” improvement via initiatives such as the addition of roundabouts and the Central park.

Valparaiso University continues to attract a talented and capable student enrollment through ongoing educational and infrastructural initiatives, and just this year we are seeing the opening of the porter regional hospital and the burgeoning development of the medical corridor along state road 49.

additionally, i have enjoyed watching job creation take place as the Valpo Chamber has facilitated various new business expansion projects which keep our local economy vibrant.

our Chamber offers an opportunity for business persons at all levels to participate in economic development, economic education, and business-to-business networking events throughout the year.

The a.M. Valpo program gives the small business person the chance to network with peers at an early hour, keeping with his or her hectic schedule. Meeting new and start-up businesses at various ribbon cutting and “grand opening” ceremonies gives me a chance to get to know businesses, and their owners, who may be new to the area.

The educational seminars, such as Disney institute held last year, allow me, and other personnel from my organization, to have access to some of the most progressive motivational and inspirational seminars being offered to business today.

Through interaction with the Chamber executive Committee, i recently heard an extremely thoughtful and insightful presentation featuring contrasting view points on the multi-faceted “right to Work” legislation, which left me much more well-informed on all sides of this contemporary business issue.

it is exciting and challenging to be part of our organization which facilitates the congruence of entrepreneurs, civic and municipal leaders, and local business persons who work together to build a support network which allows business not just to survive – but to thrive and succeed.

Many individuals i encounter through Chamber work are not just entrepreneurial; they are action oriented and opportunistic in a positive way: they see the urgency of acting now to accomplish a task or achieve the desired objective.

i am very pleased to be a part of such a positive team, and i would encourage all who want to move business forward to consider the many positive aspects of Chamber membership. it’s all about long-term relationships and the Valpo Chamber helps us to develop them. VM
