DEAR PARENTS & FRIENDS OF VALLEY CATHOLIC SCHOOLWelcome to the Gala!

We are so very pleased that you are here with us at Montgomery Park to celebrate Valley Catholic School.

The Gala is an event that brings all of us together. Whether we are Sisters, parents, sponsors, volunteers or staff, we all recognize the need to ensure the future of our students and the excellent programs provided for them. This evening would not be possible without your commitment to Valley Catholic School, as well as the many, many individuals who have devoted countless hours to preparing for this event. I would like to extend a personal thank you to all who have worked so hard on the Gala, particularly the Foundation staff and co-chairs Danette Scales and Sara Hoppes. I am deeply grateful for their dedication to our school and their willingness to share their talents. Thank you!

On behalf of our principals, our faculty and staff, and the entire Valley Catholic School family, a heartfelt “thank you” for being here with us this evening. I encourage you to raise your wine glass – and your bidder number – to toast Valley Catholic.

God bless,

AMY TROY

YOUR EMCEEAmy is a native Oregonian who grew up on a farm in the southern part of the state. She’s also a “Fighting Duck” who studied journalism at The University of Oregon. Amy started her career in television news at stations in Bend and Eugene before taking jobs in San Antonio, Salt Lake City and Phoenix. She returned to anchor

positions in the Pacific Northwest in 2005 to be closer to her family and was featured on KPTV from 2013 to 2016.

Amy has received several honors in her career, including a prestigious Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for a story called “Kaden” while working at KNXV-TV in Phoenix. The Utah Broadcaster’s Association also awarded her for Children’s Initiative Reporting. In addition, Amy has been honored with Emmy nominations for Spot News Reporting & Cultural Issues Reporting. She has also been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists, Arizona Broadcasters Association and Oregon Broadcasters Association.

In true Oregonian fashion, Amy loves the outdoors. Not only is she a life-long equestrian, Amy enjoys skiing the slopes of the Pacific Northwest. She has a creative side too: Amy is an avid painter and loves to read.

JIM JUNGERS

YOUR AUCTIONEERJim Jungers has been a leading auctioneer in the Northwest since 1984. He began his career working with his father, Mike Jungers, at commercial auctions along the West Coast. In 1992 Jim joined the Stokes Auction Group team to meet the need for experienced charity auctioneers.

Fun, laughter, enthusiasm…these are just a few words to describe Jim’s auction style. There is none other who brings as much energy to the stage as Jim; he commands his audience’s attention and guarantees an enjoyable event. Underneath his silliness lies a compassionate nature that breaks down barriers and encourages others to join him in supporting the cause.

From Washington D.C. to Washington State, Jim has helped hundreds of organizations achieve fundraising success. Jim is one of the most-requested and most popular auctioneers on the Stokes’ team.

GALA CO-CHAIRS

DANETTE SCALES & SARA HOPPES

Welcome to the Gala! A night that we come together to show our appreciation, give thanks and continue building a strong Valley Catholic campus! Families from many backgrounds and children of all ages are all a part of growing the legacy the Sisters started so many years ago. We are passionate about building a school, and community that will thrive for generations to come. Committed teachers, administrators, coaches, and volunteers work tirelessly to guide our children so they can develop their skills in order to find their passion in the world.

The exceptional learning environment and diverse programs our campus offers require many hands and contributions. We want to personally thank each one of you for your help no matter the size, dollar amount or time you’re able to donate. So tonight, as you catch up with old friends or as you make new ones, remember that it takes our whole community to make that difference. The Gala is the biggest fundraiser for our school. Donations support programs our kids enjoy and also relieve the financial burden for many students who desire a VCS education, regardless of financial circumstances.

Thank you for joining us in supporting Valley Catholic Schools. We sincerely hope you enjoy your evening!

“LIGHT A FIRE”“EDUCATION IS NOT THE FILLING OF A PAIL, BUT THE LIGHTING OF A FIRE.”

- W. B. YEATS

Every student, every family and every classroom at Valley Catholic is impacted by financial aid. Some students, who are vital components of the student body and bring unique gifts to the classroom, would not be a part of our community without financial aid.

Since the founding of Valley Catholic School, the Sisters at St. Mary of Oregon have devoted themselves to meeting the needs of others. Tonight you can continue that legacy by making a generous donation to “Light a Fire.”

Please consider:

• On average, tuition covers only 75% of the true cost of educating each student• Financial aid helps keep our classrooms full and vibrant• Families attending VCS with the help of financial aid receive 65% or less of the aid for which they qualify• Your gift determines whether or not some students are able to attend Valley Catholic• Financial aid enables families who experience unexpected hardship to remain enrolled at VCS

Be ready to raise your bid card during this extremely important part of tonight’s event.

Matching Gifts: Many employers will match gifts that are made to “Light a Fire.” Matching gifts are often 50% to 100% of your donation, significantly increasing the impact of your generosity. For more information, go to ssmofoundation.org.

KINDERGARTEN PROJECT

THE MOTHERHOUSE IS A SYMBOL THAT TOUCHES US ALLMRS. KELSEY GRISWOLD & MRS. CARRIE MARKEYMRS. ALLISON SHOEMAKER & MRS. TERRYSUE GREMAUX

Each Kindergarten student ‘touched’ this project in their own special and unique way. Their thumbprints were made with a specifically blended color, chosen and mixed by them, and then they filled the canvas with joyful and vibrant color. (The key is on the back of the canvas.) The Motherhouse is the most-recognized symbol of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon and the center of our Valley Catholic School community. This delightful art piece expresses the joy and enthusiasm of every kindergarten student and their love of Valley Catholic.

Many thanks to Tracie Brooks, Angie Elkins, and Lindsey and Robert Birbeck for coordinating this project.

FIRST GRADE PROJECT

STRING ART HEARTMRS. DEIDRE PRIBULA & MRS. JULIE CANOYMRS. ANNE STORM & MRS. SALLY BUTZER

This spectacular one-of-a-kind art piece, was lovingly created in an act of unity by our very own first grade classes. Each student was able to reflect on how they are all united in Christ just as the string used to outline the heart is one piece and ties them all together. Framed in beautiful walnut, the “Choose Love” message and the heart were created from laser cut bronze acrylic. Then, each student and teachers’ names were etched within the heart.

Many thanks to Jim and Kyla Dunlap, Daniel and Jamie Madland, Mike and Danielle Julier, and Project 202 LLC for coordinating this project.

SECOND GRADE PROJECT

WE CHOOSE LOVEMRS. JESSIE RAUSCHENBURG & MRS. HEATHER GENTRYMS. MEGAN SMITH & MRS. AKHILA MADHUSUDANChoosing to love, that is what the Valley Catholic Elementary School second graders can do each day. This beautiful canvas holds their fingerprints in the center, spelling out their daily intention. Then, wrapped around that commitment are quotes from each student about their choices. How do they “choose love?” Here are a few excerpts: “I choose love by loving my sister and being kind to my friends.”“I choose love by including everyone.”“I can choose love every day by respecting others if they are different.”What an incredibly beautiful reminder of life’s most important thoughts.

Many thanks to Page Beedy, Stefanie Jacquemin and Edith Reinecker for coordinating this project.

THIRD GRADE PROJECT

A CIRCLE OF HEARTSMS. TRICIA CROY & MRS. MONIQUE IERARDIMRS. NANCY FALLIN & MS. MEGAN BRAUSER

The third grade class took a new approach this year, and illustrated the theme of “Choose Love” in a digital work of art. It was painstakingly created by layering their digital creations with the use of a variety of applications. They drew their hearts, used digital watercolors to paint them, and then erased patterns into them to finish them off. Their individual works were then combined into a circle of love, printed and framed.

Many thanks to Jessina McGregor, Cecilia Nguyen Tran, Tamara Ottum and Donalynn Ramones for coordinating this project.

FOURTH GRADE PROJECT

WE ADOREGONMS. BAYLEE BUTZER MRS. CHRISTINA FLINT & MS. MEGAN BRAUSER

This rustic representation of Oregon was lovingly constructed by the 4th grade students. While studying the history and geography of Oregon, they have translated that knowledge into a beautiful map of our state. A single length of string is wound and wrapped around each nail to illustrate the ties that bind us together, and at the “heart” of it all is Portland.

Many thanks to Todd and Jeanelle Lindsey, Tracy McGuire, and Monica Spangler for coordinating this project.

FIFTH GRADE PROJECT

OUR HEARTS ARE FULL OF MEMORIESMRS. SHARON CARTWRIGHTMS. CONNIE HEGER & MRS. HEATHER GENTRY

This hand-crafted quilt project began with the desire to capture special memories made during the fifth graders’ years at Valley Catholic School. Those sweet memories were expressed in the form of an individual piece created by each student. This one-of-a-kind quilt illustrates what is meaningful to each of them, including art literacy, CYO Sports, the annual Halloween Carnival, favorite classes and activities. The cozy quilt was stitched together by a class grandma (Mimi) and includes its own made-to-fit bag. Surely, a treasured keepsake for the students’ transition to middle school.

Many thanks to Dale Gatlin, Mechell Hansen, Sara Hoppes, Stefanie Jacquemin, Genevieve Long, Ruth Long (Mimi), Julie Sherwin, Noreen Soares, and Stella Tan for coordinating this project.

6 SHOOTIN’ WITH THE SISTERSSATURDAY, AUGUST 25, 2018

Stand up for what you want in this progressive bid: Only 24 guests will be able to attend this event!.

To secure your seat at the party, stand and raise your bid card when the auctioneer announces the opening bid. If there are more than the 24 spots desired, the auctioneer will “progress” the bid. The bid amount per person will continue to progress until we have 24 guests at the highest bid. If you would like to purchase more than one ticket on your bid card, then please indicate with a show of fingers. The auction clerk will then write down the bid numbers that are going to the event. Certificates with all the details will be presented at checkout.

Those lucky enough to get a spot will spend an afternoon trap shooting with Sisters Krista, Michael Francine and Adele Marie at Camp Howard, “Oregon’s Catholic Camp” just 42 miles from our school. Camp Howard is located between Corbett and Sandy on 240 acres of beautiful Douglas fir forests, rolling meadows, and mountain streams. This popular party has sold out for the past three years. It is, quite literally, a blast! Trap shooting, the sport of shooting clay pigeons with a shotgun, is an Olympic sport, and Camp Howard has the setup and all the equipment. When you arrive at Camp Howard, enjoy a barbecue lunch before watching the clay “pigeons” fly.

GALA AUCTION RULESREGISTRATION• All bidders must register. You will be given an

identification number to use for all bidding. One number will be given per family unit or individual guest; if requested, a family unit may request to have individual numbers.

• Your signature on the registration form constitutes a legal contract to buy any item for which you are successful in bidding.

PURCHASING• All sales are final and there will be no exchange or

refund on items except where specified.

• Arrangements for dates for all trips and similar events are the sole responsibility of the purchaser. Unless specified, all certificates for trips expire on February 10, 2019, one year from the date of the Gala. Moreover, no refunds are permitted for canceled, lost or unused tickets and/or accommodations, or if the purchaser is unable to arrange a mutually agreeable date for the purchased trip or event.

• Values set forth are estimates only and are not warranted by the Valley Catholic Gala or the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Foundation (hereinafter “Gala Chair/Official”) for tax purposes or for general value. All items are sold “As Is.” The Gala Chair/Official assumes no responsibility for the correctness of item description.

• Due to local liquor control laws, restaurant certificates do not include alcoholic beverages, unless otherwise stated.

• Gift certificates not on display in baskets will be held at the check-out desk. They may be collected from retrieval when you check out.

• Payment for winning bids at the Silent or Live Auction must be made by cash, check (payable to Valley Catholic Gala), or credit card (VISA, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover). Payment in full is mandatory no later than 10:30 p.m. the night of the auction. Items too large to be taken home the night of the auction may be picked up the following Tuesday between noon and 5 p.m. at the Gala Office at the rear of the SSMO Convent, unless other arrangements are made with the Gala Chair/Official.

• Unless otherwise specified, all items and services purchased at the Gala will expire on February 10, 2019.

• The Gala is run in accordance with the Oregon State law regarding auction sales. The specific statute applying to auctions can be found at Oregon Revised Statutes 72.3280.

SILENT AUCTION• All items in the Silent Auction have bid sheets on the

table in front of them. Items are located on the tables around the room. Persons desiring to bid must do so by legibly writing their bid number, full name and amount of bid in the spaces provided.

• Bid raises must be in the minimum amounts specified on the bid sheet. If the minimum bid is not observed, the bid is void. The Gala Chair/Official will make the final determination of the successful bidder

on any written auction item. If a subsequent bid is disqualified or otherwise stricken for any reason prior to the closing of bidding, the last, highest bid on the bid sheet will be deemed the successful bid.

• Some Silent Auction items may have designated “guaranteed bid” amounts. A bidder may choose to bypass all competitive bidding by paying the specified guaranteed bid listed on the bottom of the bid sheet. To do so, the bidder writes his/her bid number and name on the line next the guaranteed bid price. An Gala Chair/Official will draw a line across the entire bid sheet to indicate that the item is no longer available for bidding.

• Under no circumstances may a bid sheet be removed except by the Gala Chair/Official.

• Announcements will be made prior to the closing. The closing bid certified by an Gala Chair/Official will constitute the winning bid. The Silent Auction will close at 6:20 p.m. The “Super” Silent area will close at 6:40 p.m. At that time, all bidding will end in the section being closed and no more writing is allowed on bid sheets in that section.

Page 70: VALLEY CATHOLIC SCHOOL GALA FEBRUARY 10, 2018 · Sr. Rita Watkins ‘61, SSMO Sr. Josephine Pelster ‘65, SSMO Sr. Juliana Monti, SSMO VALLEY CATHOLIC SCHOOL ... Thomas Melillo,

MINI-LIVE AUCTION• Grade Projects will be featured in a special portion

of the evening called the Mini-Live. Announcements warning that the Mini-Live is about to begin will be made during the silent auction between 6:20 p.m. and 6:40 p.m. Then, at 6:45 the Mini-Live Auction will begin. The auctioneer will begin the oral bidding process. All Grade Projects will be sold during the Mini-Live PRIOR to the Live Auction.

• Grade projects are exclusive to the Gala. No projects may be requested, created, copied or sold after the event without consulting a Gala Official.

LIVE AUCTION• Live Auction bidding will begin at approximately

7:30 p.m. and will continue until all items have been auctioned. Live Auction items are described in the Gala catalog.

• Under Oregon law regarding auctions, a sale at auction is complete when the auctioneer so announces by lowering the gavel, or in any other customary manner. Therefore, once the gavel falls, the purchase is complete and the auction item has been purchased by the bidder. All sales are final and there will be no exchange or refund on an item except where specified.

• To bid, the purchaser raises his/her bidder number high so it can be seen easily. It will be acknowledged by one of the spotters; then the purchaser may lower

it until he/she wishes to bid again.

• Bidding order of Live Auction items is subject to change after the publication of Gala catalog.

• No duplicate items may be offered in the Live Auction, unless authorized by the donor, in person or prior to bidding.

GOLDEN TICKET RAFFLE • Valley Catholic Golden Ticket raffle is held in strict

accordance with Oregon state law and guidelines provided by the Oregon Department of Justice. Ticket purchasers must be at least 18 years old.

• Golden Ticket Raffle: Guests may purchase a Golden Ticket; no more than 100 tickets will be sold at $100 each. The winning ticket will be drawn on stage just prior to the Live Auction. The winner will choose from all Live Auction packages. The method of payment toward the chosen package will appear as “Golden Ticket” in the payment section of the winner’s receipt. Once the winner has chosen the package and the Live Auction has begun, no changes will be allowed by the winner. Winner may forfeit the prize and donate the package back to the auction to be sold during the Live Auction. The Golden Ticket winner’s signature will be required for recording purposes.

PROXY BIDDING• Bids may be made in absentia via the proxy bid form

provided by the Gala Office and available on the auction website. Proxy bids are applicable for Live, Mini Live and Silent Auction packages. Silent Auction items with guaranteed bids are exempt from Proxy bidding. Proxy bid sheets must be received in the Gala office no later than Thursday, February 8 at 5 p.m. Proxy Bidders will be represented by a Gala official during the bidding process.

• Bidders may submit absentee bids for sign-up parties, but those bids will not be entered on the sign-up sheets until after the Silent Auction has closed and all bidders present at the Gala have had an opportunity to purchase spots.

WARRANTY• The Gala Chair/Official, Auctioneer, Seller or Donor

may not give any warranty, express or implied, as to the quality of the description of the property listed for sale in the announcement concerning the sale. In addition, the Gala Chair/Official, Auctioneer, Seller or Donor is not liable for the quality of the property listed for sale in the announcement or for any faulty description thereof, in any advertisement, catalog or other medium employed for announcing the sale. Purchaser shall not be entitled to damages, recession or any other remedy on account of the quality of the property listed for sale in the announcement or the faulty description of the property.
