April 8 and 9, 2011 were the dates of the

Valley of Cambridge’s Spring Reunion named in

honor of Dr Alonzo D Steele, Jr, 33°. Seven

candidates were with us to witness a total of eight

degrees which culminated in the 31° and 32° on

Saturday afternoon. Lunch on Saturday was

served by the Guernsey Chapter #211 OES and

we appreciate all the hard work these ladies do

on our behalf.

Clarington #597 led the way with 2

candidates and five lodges had one each. This

spring we had visitors from as far away as St

Louis, Missouri and Rochester, New York. These

brethren traveled a long way to witness this

degree work and were very complimentary.

Thanks to everyone for their help as a reunion

involves a tremendous amount of people and

activity.

We also had two others members join the

Valley of Cambridge this spring. Guy E Bing II

#363 and Jason P Staats #609 participated in the

Valley of Columbus’s Local Degree Experience at

Rio Grande in March. If you see any of these

new brethren please give them a warm welcome

to the Scottish Rite Valley of Cambridge.

From the Secretary’s Desk In February two of our members celebrated their 100th birthdays. Brothers Howard Caldwell #175 and George Richey #66 turned 100 on February 8 and 11. Brother Richey passed away on June 1, but if you happen to see Brother Caldwell congratulate him. I understand he doesn’t get out much anymore. Last Spring I attended the Point Pleasant #360 inspection. In addition to the fellowship, food, and an excellent Fellowcraft Degree, I was reminded again of what masonry means to a lot of our members. This was the last inspection of the year for the 23rd Masonic District and the awards for attendance were distributed. As these awards were presented it amazed me to think of the dedications to obtain such attendance records. Flushing #298 won the overall attendance award and was the highest attending lodge at all 18 of the district’s inspections. Kudos to Master Thomas Bugala and the brethren of Flushing #298 for their support of Masonry. Ryan Merry is planning a Lodge Ambassadors Meeting for October 4, 2011. Details are still being worked out, but if you are a Lodge Ambassador or an Area Representative try to pencil this date on your calendar. The Ohio Council of Deliberation meeting at Cleveland in June was full of events that affected the Valley. Monte Hunter and Troy Simmons receiving their Meritorious Service Jewels and Caps and the announcement of John

Lanning and Richard Miller election to receive the MSA at next year’s OCD meeting was followed by the announcement that Jeff Miller, 33° would succeed Randy Williams, 33° as Deputy’s Representative. This created some scurrying around as we consulted the Constitution as to what should happen next. Lori Miller’s arranging of a reception was truly exceptional. David Mourer, 33° did my Secretary duties at the June meeting as I was out of town. It all was taken care of and thanks to everyone who assisted. Lots of luck Jeff. Recently Clark Armstrong and his wife June celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Below is a scan of a business size card that Clark is more than happy and anxious to hand out to his many friends and acquaintances. I guess this says all you need to know if you expect to make 70 years of marriage. Congratulations Clark and June.

Fraternally, Tom Fisher

ROBERT S MOOREHEAD, JR. SUCCEEDS TO THRICE POTENT MASTER

At the Valley of Cambridge’s Lodge of Perfection meeting on June 13, 2011 approval was given for Deputy Master Robert S Moorehead, Jr to succeed to the Thrice Potent Master’s position which was vacated when Jeffrey L Miller, 33° was appointed Deputy’s Representative for the Valley of Cambridge. AWARDS PRESENTED AT SPRING REUNION

Present to receive awards at the Spring Reunion were Glenn Nicholson #66 (Left-50 years), Robert Shepherd #251 (Middle 60 years), and Rogers Marshall #1 (Right-50 years). These awards were in recognition of their many years of membership in the Valley of Cambridge. We appreciate these brethren’s support throughout the years and the effort they made to be with us at the reunion. Also recognized was James Hoffman for the completion of his passport which recorded his witnessing of all 29 Scottish Rite degrees. Jim made a trip to Bay City, Michigan last fall to witness a couple of his missing degrees and was thrilled with the reception and welcome he received. Scottish Rite masonry is alive and well and attendance at reunions and visits to other valleys reinforce masonic fellowship in a very personal and enjoyable manner.

SUMMER 2011 VALLEY NEWS AND VIEWS PAGE 6

In the fall of 2001 the

Cambridge Learning Center

opened with one student being

tutored one-to-one for one hour

twice a week. Since that time

over 125 students have

completed the program and

accumulated over 10,000 hours

of individual instruction. Jen

and Dan Navicky were the first

tutors trained in the Orton-

Gillingham tutoring method and

Jen was selected as the first

and only director. During the

last session 12 tutors worked

with 24 students. There is no

charge for this service and

children have come from all

over Southeastern Ohio. The

commitment of the parents to

see that the children attend the

two sessions each week is

appreciable but the results are

well worth the effort as the

children are greatly improved

when the program is completed.

On May 19 the Center

held its annual graduation

exercise at the Cambridge

Masonic Lodge to honor the 11

students who had completed

the program. About 100

people were on hand to share

this time with the students,

parents, family, and friends.

Jen introduced the tutors and

board of governors and thanked

them for their efforts. Awards

were presented to Bill Gannon

of Whiteside’s Motors, Dan

Titko of Speedy Print, and

Amazon #31 OES for their

support. Recognition was also

given to the many Eastern Star

Chapters who have supported

and continue to support the

Center along with the efforts of

the Activities Committee who

put together the Golf Outing

fund raiser each fall.

On the following page is

a list of the Members of the

Valley of Cambridge who made

a donation to the Learning

Center along with their dues

payment from August 1, 2010 to

June 16, 2011. These

donations equaled $2183.66

which will be used to support

the Center in the upcoming

year. The Center is grateful to

the Estate of Frank Dodderer of

Coolville #337 F&AM for his

generous donation which will

provide a stable financial base

for the Center ’s future

operation.

On the following page

also is an announcement for the

Center Annual Golf Outing

which is the Center’s major

fundraiser. A group of about 12

or 15 people work with this

outing and they have been very

successful throughout the

years. It goes without saying

that without their efforts the

Center’s finances would not be

nearly as favorable and their

future not nearly as bright.

If more information on

the Children’s Dyslexia Center

or any of their activities are

needed please contact Jen
