COMMODORE’S REPORT Ray Porter

Check out the spectacular sunsets over Cockburn Sound - in person at the club on a balmy summer evening. Photo Courtesy R Kennington. Roberta has posted some magnificent sunset photos on our discussion forum. Why not join the forum and post some photos . www,cockburnpowerboats.com.au/Forum

Well as far as summer is concerned it is over. Pretty hot days and plenty of winds just to annoy us, but I think this is becoming the norm each summer. Autumn is usually a good weather pattern for boating so get your boat ready. There have been some good turn outs at the Club on those good days with lots of members out enjoying their boating preferences. Work is continuing around the Club with our usual volunteers. I would particularly like to thank Bill and Vera Davey with their help in reorganising the new hard stand area. Yes you guessed it Bill had his trusty assistant Vera helping, climbing up and down the ladder removing and replacing fencing. The sundowner in February was a great event put on by the Social Committee girls and we can’t forget the hard working husbands that spent the afternoon cooking the food. The entertainment was great and the food just kept coming out. Not sure about others there but I could not eat another bit of tucker. Thanks to Willie Creek Pearls and Bob and Yvonne McKenna for their kind donation. It was raffled off and the winner went away with a big smile. There is a free sausage sizzle being hosted by the Club on Sunday the 13th March. Come on down and say hello. I will be there and glad to have a chat. It is also that time of year again to hold the Half Yearly General Meeting. This is on the 25th March in the Club Rooms starting at 8.00pm. Please make the effort and come along to support your Club.

Regards Ray Porter

Sportfishing The Group annual Crustacean Bake has come and gone at James and Sharon’s place Sunday 20th Feb’, small crowd, good food, good time, thanks to James and Sharon for the work they put in..

Feb’ comp’ was run on the hot and largely calm weekend 26th / 27th Feb’, some boats ventured to the FADS area on Saturday, trolled up a few tuna just beyond the West End and finished with a session on Mahi Mahi (or Dolphinfish) using lures and bait, lures proved the go on the day. Most of the Mahi weren’t huge, there were some much larger fish up to a metre plus down deep that didn’t want to play. Great fun on light sportfishing gear.

A few boats fished the deeper water on Sunday for very little return – small queen snapper, nanygai, Samson fish, flathead etc, big areas of coral spawn clogging the water column, wind with a bit of NE to it and big currents in some areas all mixed in with extremely warm water (25.5C) meant the fish didn’t want to play at all. We need a good storm to stir things up and get the fish back on the chew.

The Group has set dates for the Shark Bay trip next year – March 31st (Sat) until April 7th (Sat), crews are to make their own accommodation plans – has moved to Denham as Monkey Mia is booked up, some boats are staying on after that week, others will be heading back south. Some crews are booking at the Denham Seaside Village, others are chasing rental houses. There’ll be a trip comp’ and a trip dinner organized as well as something a bit more light-hearted, crews that know the area will lead the way and will give a briefing or areas, tackle, tactics etc much closer to the time at a Group meeting. Luke and Mike Sanders are carrying the torch for this one, anyone is welcome to tag along.

Anyone keen to go an the night orientation around the Sound sometime in April (weather dependant) needs to log their name with Hazel in the office, numbers will be strictly limited to keep the event manageable.

Tight Lines.

Next Competition: The February 2011 competition will be held on Saturday or Sunday 12th or 13th March 2011. For those interested, the fishing hours are from Midnight on Friday to 2 pm on Sunday. The competition will be judged on a points score based on the fish species and the length of the fish taken or released. At least one person from each participating boat needs to attend the official weigh in at 2 pm on the Sunday of the competition. Catch and release sheets need to be provided to the Weigh Master or his representative at that time in order for the scores to count in the competition.

Next Fishing Group Meeting: The next Fishing Group Meeting will be held on Monday 21st March at 7.30 pm at the club. There are no formal application processes for club members – just show up on the day and you are one of us.

Works & Grounds

Busy Bee day arrived and with it came the nice weather, plenty of jobs to be done. We had a few new members, who put in some of their time to help with the ongoing , never ending maintenance that comes with a club of this type.

There are now nice easy to follow yellow arrows painted by Pip and Bob. They nearly missed morning tea as they vanished over the hill and were lost from sight. Jan and Brian tackled the lines marking the way into the hard stand area. Hopefully this should be completed at our next busy bee.

Our older contingent of Ernie and George were busy as well, Ernie cleaning filters and barbecues, he does a good job of keeping this area clean and ready for use. George was making trailer plates as these have to be displayed on all boat trailers in the club grounds.

Paul and Colin were lucky, they tackled cooking the crabs, ready for the Seafood Sundowner that was being held on the same date and they were cooked to perfection.

Morning tea was a sausage sizzle, everyone enjoys these and it is hard to get up and go after smoko. Cathy and Vera after organising morning tea and cleaning up, then started on preparing food for the Sundowner helped by Heather, who is Pips wife, they were up in the city from Denmark where they live.

Before closing, I would like to ask if there is a bricklayer in the club who would be willing to do a small job. If so would you please contact Hazel and she will let you know what we require. Once again thanks to all who showed up, it was a good busy bee.

Mid-Week Group Lorna Clarke

Greetings All, It was a pleasure to attend our first get together for year 2011, though only 22 members were able to make it, those who did enjoyed the day. Delores Tales. Delores began by welcoming everyone, hoping we all had a happy festive season and that this year will be a good one. She had heard from Barry & Val Farquahar who were unable to make it to-day but hope to pop in now and then. Fred Ayres is in hospital having treatment for his health problems, as is Keith Whitehouse, who is not travelling very well at the moment. To both of them goes best wishes for much better days from all your mid-week friends. Fred Stone was recently in hospital but was with us to-day, so to any other members who may be suffering health problems, may you all soon be “in the pink” again and back with the group a.s.a.p. Delores was pleased to announce that we are in the money, we have cash in the bank ($1,344) after expenses, a good start to the year. The subject of Lotto was discussed, we didn’t have much luck in 2010, Should we (a) stick with the same format or (b) change to a different system for a trial 3 or 4 months. I’m sure, well, almost, that (b) won, as I forgot to write the result down. Apologies for that. Joan S. wished to thank Deanna and Delores for their efforts in keeping our group running smoothly. It was proposed that the current committee carry on and this was agreed with acclamation. Games Reports: Rummy. What a day, we Three Musketeers all seemed to have dropsy and kept knocking our tiles of their stands, even on to the floor. Shirley was the main winner, with two games, Joan & Lorna had one each. No money to go from us into kitty. Oops! Euchre. As it forgot to get the results before leaving,(tut, tut!) rang Ivan to get his report. Very brief, Ivan & Barry “thrashed” Fred S & Doug, three games to Nil. As he had no other info to pass on, will have to make some up. I’m going to barrack for Fred & Doug to wallop the opposition next month. Go chaps. Bowls. This was an exciting afternoon’s play, both teams neck and neck most of the time. At the end it was a draw, so a decider game was played, the result, BLACK won eight games and BROWN seven. Well done the winners, commiserations to the runners up. Next month - maybe a change. Cheerio

Lorna.

BIRTHDAYS

With no lunch day in January, belated birthday greetings to:-

Corry....9th......Robbie....27th.... Fred S..... 28th. Hope you all had happy days.

For February....Congrats and best wishes to:- Andrena....12th and Joan W....17th.

May everyone have a great year in 2011.

How “O.K.” Started. During civil wars long ago, when troops returned, a writing was put up for all to read, “15 killed” or “10 killed” for example. If there were no casualties it was written as ‘0 Killed’ .from there it came to be shortened to ‘O.K.’ which meant all was good.

Social Up-date

What a wonderful crowd that came to the Valentines Sundowner. By members feedback everyone had a great time enjoying wonderful music and partaking in many varieties of seafood. Thank you to Willie Creek Pearls and everyone who helped on the day. For something more casual we are having a Sausage Sizzle whilst the bar is open on Sunday 13th March. So why not come down, or after you have been out on your boat, come up to your club and enjoy a quiet beer, some food, whilst the sun is setting. You must admit we have the best view for some of those beautiful sunsets over Garden Island. Please advise the club if you will be attending for catering purposes. You may have noticed we haven’t really planned any more functions until our Christmas in July. This is due to the roof hopefully being restored during the coming months. So please read your newsletter just incase the restoration is completed earlier than July, as we will definitely organize a function.

HOW ABOUT SENDING IN SOME PHOTOS AND

RECIPES TO SHARE WITH CLUB MEMBERS!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH A big thankyou from Matt to the person who handed in the Fishing Rod over the Christmas period.. Matt’s father in law was very happy to get it back…

“My Father in law was so grateful to get his outfit back; it was worth quite a bit of

money and probably would never have been replaced.

Goes to show you that our Club is worth more to us than just paying the fees and using the ramps – thanks.” Matt

The Club Rubbish Collection is on Thursdays. This means that

rubbish is lying around in the hot sun for almost a week!

Rubbish becomes very smelly and is bad enough when in the bins, never mind in bags and boxes.

Please, if our bins are full, take your rubbish home with you.

Oh, and we don’t want your old drawer either.

Having an overload of rubbish means that our bins will be half full heading

into the weekend! Not an ideal situation

Spotted on the Ramps - one of our members has been spotted early morning cleaning his catch on the ramps.

No fish cleaning on the club grounds guys.

All club boats need to have club stickers and member identification on the trailers. If you need stickers or id plates contact the office. If you are bringing in a boat not registered with the club please leave your Name, Membership Number and Registration number of the boat you have taken out on the dashboard of your car. There are yellow cards available in the under croft area for this purpose.
