VALDELIA : an
Extended Producer
Responsibility
System for non
household furniture
waste
EPR : Extended producer responsibility
EPR has been set up to :
Relieve local authorities of all or part of the cost of waste disposal,
and transfer the financing from the taxpayers to the consumers
and/or users.
Include the cost of the products’ end of life in the new product sale
price.
Reduce the quantities of waste furniture sent to landfill.
Increase recycling
Two EPR systems have been set-up in France for furniture waste :
Ecomobilier for the household furniture waste.
Valdelia for the non-household furniture waste.
They share a common objective : encourage reuse thanks to a strong
partnership with local authorities.

Valdelia and its services
Valdelia is a non profit-making company created in 2011 by
professional furniture manufacturers.
The scope is : furniture equipments for
companies, schools, hospitals,
hotels, restaurants, etc…
VALDELIA contributes to achieving environmental goals with
respect to waste treatment :
Achieve 75 % of reuse or recycling;
Collect 100 % of furniture supplied the year before (in tons);
Free collection for professional owners for volumes heavier than 2.4
tons
Treatment is free of charge for owners.
3
Specific Valdelia requirements for Reuse
To have reuse at the top the waste hierarchy
To take back furniture waste not selected for reuse
To facilitate the access to the furniture waste stream
With a final target : a 50% increase of the the quantities of
furniture waste sent for reuse in 2017
4
Reuse: who are the partners of Valdelia ?
5
The social enterprises active in re-use, repair and recycling awarded by Valdelia carry out furniture reuse activities either locally or via
humanitarian projects.
Partnership on a national level with the
big networks (ENVIE, Emmaüs, Réseau des
Ressourceries) and independent
organisations.
In figures:
98 partnerships in 2014
525 tons of re-used furniture
2,9% of treated nonfurniture.
How does this partnership work?
6
Valdelia allows its
partners to access
reusable furniture and to
set up a selective
collection scheme

Two streams are collected simultaneously: - The non reusable furniture goes to a Valdelia dumpster dumpster
loaded by the owner. - The reusable furniture is collected by the ESS organisation(s) truck
loaded by the ESS organisations’ employees.
Once collected where does it go?
This furniture equipment is either:
Used internally by Valdelia partners.
Donated to local associations or to foreign countries as material
aid .
Sold in solidarity stores, 80% of
their visitors being individuals
« Upcycled »*
*The process of converting waste materials
or useless products into new materials or
products of better quality
8
Once the furniture is collected, it is
subjected to traceability requirements.
The furniture sold or donated is
supported by 130 €/ton.

Traceablity commitment supported by
Valdelia
Why promote reuse?
10
Socially : By contributing to the projects fighting against exclusion set up by the
social and solidarity economy sector.
By allowing the employees on a back to work scheme to develop new
competencies (collection, reparation, sale, etc…)
Economically By participating to the implementation of the local circular economy
model,
Environmentally: By prioritizing waste reduction and reuse
By raising the employees’ awareness about environment conscious
behaviours.
