Dosage and Administration

General Directions: Vaccination of healthy cattle is

recommended. Aseptically rehydrate the freeze-dried

vaccine with the liquid component provided, shake well

and administer 5 mL subcutaneously. In accordance with

Beef Quality Assurance guidelines, products should be

administered in the muscular region of the neck.

Primary Vaccination: Administer an initial 5-mL dose,

followed by a second 5-mL dose 3 weeks later. As an aid in

preventing IBR-induced abortion and BVD persistently

infected calves, administer at approximately 5 and 2 weeks

prior to breeding. Calves vaccinated before the age of 6

months should be revaccinated after 6 months of age.

Revaccination: Annual revaccination with a single dose is

recommended.

Good animal husbandry and herd health management

practices should be employed.

Living attenuated smooth B.abortus strain 19 in

serous form or freeze dried (lyophilized vaccine).

SC to female calves between 4 to 8 months old

5 successive years

Full dose (standard dose): about 60 – 80 x109

microbial cells in about 2ml.

Reduced dose (1/20 of full dose): It is widely used

nowadays specially in un-affected herd and it is

characterized by rapid decline in aglutinins.

1

Page 58: Vaccination progam in farm animals prof. dr Alaa Basyoni prof Hamed Attia

* Used in female calves at 4 – 8 months (average 6

months).

* Not used before 4 months of age due to:

(1) Reticulo-endothelial system is still undeveloped

so may result in low titer of antibodies (not

protect against disease).

(2) When given at this age, the colostrums

antibodies interfere the microbial dose and so

the immunity produce is low.

* Not used after 8 months of age: Animal produces

permanent agglutinin titer (permanent +ve

serological test).

Page 59: Vaccination progam in farm animals prof. dr Alaa Basyoni prof Hamed Attia

* Disadvantage of this vaccine:

(1) Used to vaccination of female only due to it

produce orchitis in bull.

(2) Not use in adult female as it cause abortion

except it can use in adult female in case of

outbreak.

(3) Interfere with control program due to it give

serological +ve (5% of vaccinated animal give

resistant agglutinin for 2 – 3 years).

(4) Give infection and un-dutant fever to human.

(5) Not prevent complete infection from udder.

(6) It need to be refrigerated, problems of storage

and transport at 4oC.

COMPOSITION:

Each dose of reconstituted vaccine contains 3-10 x109

ADVERSE REACTIONS:

These occur rarely in both calves and adults , to be more

sever in foreign breeds.

A local swelling occurs particularly in adult cattle and

there may be a sever systemic reaction manifested by

fever lasting

for 2-3 days.

Anaphylactic shock may occur and immediate treatment

with adrenaline hydrochloride ( 1m1. of 1 : 1000 diluted

injected subcutaneously ) or Antihistaminic drug, is also

recommended
