Founders Group UpdateThe Potters Council Founders Group

met at ACerS headquarters inWesterville, OH on July 28 to begindeveloping the infrastructure and poli-cies that will guide the organization inthe future. The retreat began with adiscussion of desired outcomes:

• A clear understanding of andagreement to the PottersCouncil mission and goals

• Determine number of boardmembers; adopt roles and qualifi-cations, define balance criteria;define quorum; identify ex-officio,

• Establish length of terms, adopttransitional model, set policy onelection or appointment andterm limits

• Set number of board meetingsper year, define venues andestablish minimum attendancerequirements

• Establish officer positions; adoptspecific duties, define length ofterms and succession criteria, define election process

• Establish standing committees, adopt committee charges, define committee membership

Leadership models and styles werethen reviewed in order to define thecontext in which volunteers andleaders can be identified and serveeffectively. It was determined thatwithin the life cycle of an organiza-tion, the Potters Council is rapidlygrowing into young adulthood, which is exactly the time when sys-tems are developed. We are alreadyover 1300 members strong and weneed leaders committed to the craftto direct the organization effectively.Below are the primary results of themeeting.

The BoardThe following nine Board positions

were identified for the Potters Council:• President• President-Elect• Immediate Past President

• Clay Art Moderator (permanentposition)

• 1 Board-appointed member• 3 At-large members• ACerS Executive Director or his

representative (ex-officio)The Founders spent time dis-

cussing the roles of The PottersCouncil Board. To summarize, theBoard shall:

• support the purpose, missionand goals of the Potters Council

• set strategic direction• represent Potters Council

membership• establish policy• approve annual budget• measure progress of goals,

objectives and programs• approve annual slate of Board

candidates• approve standards The Board will meet at least twice

a year, in the spring and fall.Recognizing that most potters areself-employed, travel support will beprovided to board members toensure that attendance at meetingsis maximized. The Founders Groupfelt that it was important to stayconnected to the general member-ship and established a policy of openboard meetings. Not only are Boardmeetings open to the membership, but also the last hour of every Boardmeeting will be devoted to hearingconcerns directly from the members.

Nominations and ElectionsProbably the most difficult issue

facing the Founders was to define theelection process. All agreed that para-mount to the success of the PottersCouncil was finding the right peopleto serve. The Founders will act as thefirst Nominating Committee and areseeking volunteers for election to theBoard and appointments to commit-tees. See the call for nominations onpage 9 of this issue for a specificdescription of positions and the qual-ifications desired.

The process for populating theBoard and Committees will work likethis:

• Call for volunteers and nomina-tions will be issued in the latesummer of each year (now forthis year)

• A slate of candidates for Boardand officer positions as well ascommittee appointments andchairpersons will be approved bythe Board at their Fall meeting

• A slate of 3 candidates will beissued to the general member-ship each year in January forelection of 1 at-large Boardmember

• Induction of Board membersand officers will be formalized atthe Spring meeting

There is a slightly modified initialplan that will be adopted for the firstyear in which:

• 1 at-large Board member will beappointed for 1 year

• 2 at-large Board members willbe elected, 1 for a 2-year termand 1 for a full 3-year term

• 1 Founder will serve as Past-President

CommitteesFour standing committees were

identified• Executive Committee• Nominating Committee• Membership Committee• Health and Safety CommitteeThe Executive Committee will

consist of the three presidential posi-tions and the ACerS ex-officio. Theprimary purpose of the ExecutiveCommittee will be to act on behalf ofthe Board during the periods betweenBoard meetings. They intend to meetquarterly, probably by phone.

The Nominating Committeewill be responsible for identifyingcandidates to serve in leadershippositions. Committee members willbe appointed by the Board for aterm of 2 years and will include:

Page 3: V1-2 Potters Council - Ceramic Arts Network · 2 Potter’s Pages Volume 1 Issue 2 Potter’s PAGES Founders Group Update The Potters Council Founders Group met at ACerS headquarters

• Immediate Past President (chair)• 2 members with previous Board

experience• 2 members without Board

experienceThe Membership Committee

will be chaired by the President-Electand will have 5 additional members, each of whom will serve a two-yearterm:

• 3 non-Board members• 1 Board member• 1 ACerS staff (non-voting)The Membership Committee shall

advise and recommend on all mat-ters pertaining to membership serv-

ices offered to all types of PottersCouncil members and potentialmembers, as well as review and rec-ommend the Board on categories ofmembership.

The Health and SafetyCommittee will be populated by 5members who have specific knowl-edge and experience on relevantissues, and chaired by a Board mem-ber appointed by the NominatingCommittee. An ACerS staff memberwill also serve on the committee tosupport their work.

This committee will identifyhealth, environmental and work-

place safety issues of importanceand concern to potters; and in con-junction with ACerS staff, produceinformation products that willaddress these issues.

Obviously, quite a bit of informa-tion to digest. These rules for oper-ation will be a work in progress for a period of time as the PottersCouncil continues to grow andchange. But it is a starting pointand I thank the Founders Group fortheir hard work. Look for the officialrules to be posted on the Website (www.potterscouncil.org) soon.

Discover the Excitement of Slipware!FORTHCOMING!Mary Wondrausch on Slipware By Mary WondrauschCo-Published by The American Ceramic Society, Westerville, Ohio, USA and A&C Black Publishers, Ltd, London

In this revised reprint of her classic book, Mary Wondrausch examines the history of slipware, narrating its development in many countries and discussing the techniques and practicalitiesinvolved.

This new edition features many more color images, as well as new pictures not previously includ-ed. The story has been brought up to the present, showing how the current generation of slip-ware artists is using this exciting medium.

Slipware has a long tradition of being used for commemorative wares and as such, it has playedan important part in marking historical events both for individuals and nations. This special rolemakes this book essential reading for potters, ceramic collectors and historians alike. MaryWondrausch on Slipware is a valuable reference tool as well as a lively read.Publication date: November 2001 (tent.)Hardcover • 150 pages (approx.) • Color photos throughoutISBN 1-57498149-8 • Order code: G073List price: $40 • Member* price: $32

Irma Starr Demonstrates the Lost Art of 17th Century English SlipwareA Video PresentationThe Burnap collection of 17th century English slipware pottery at the Nelson AtkinsMuseum of Art in Kansas City is one of the finest in North America. Four objects werechosen by Irma Starr to demonstrate four lost techniques of slip trailing, combing, feathering and marbling.

Her research over the years, based initially on the writings of Shoji Hamada and BernardLeach, has involved not only throwing the shapes of that period but also analyses of theclay body, the slip colors, and the decorative techniques themselves, especially finecombing. Starr demonstrates a technique taught to her by potter Warren MacKenzie, who was taught the skill by Leach at Cornwall, England.

This video presents a rare look into a classic technique.Running time: 50 minutes • Order code: D064List price: $30 • Member* price: $27
