On December 29, 1965, State Prizewinner, Candidate of Technica l Sciences Vladimir Nikolaevich Grameni t -

skii ce lebrated his 60th birthday and thirty years of act ivi ty at the Al l -Union Scientif ic Research Institute of the State Commi t tee of Standards, Measures and Measuring Instruments of the USSR (VNIIGK).

V. N. Gramenitski i started his act ivi ty in the State Commi t t ee ' s system as a technic ian at the f lowmeter l ab - oratory, but soon became one of the leading scientif ic workers of the VNIIGK and an outstanding expert in the field of mechanica l measurements.

Since 1935 he has taken an act ive part in developing met ro log ica l research for testing and checking various

instruments used in measuring the flow of liquids and gases and in the development of corresponding normal iz ing specifications.

The main period in V. N. Gramenitski i ' s creat ive ac t iv i ty is related with the development of instruments for measuring pressure, force, and mass. His work has served as a basis for the further development of reference instru- ments for measuring large forces and masses.

In 1950 V. N. Gramenitski i successfuily appl ied the packless piston principle to new spheres of measurements. On his in i t ia t ive a laboratory of dead-weight piston instruments was established at the VNIIGK, which has become one of the leading metro logica l centers in developing high-precis ion instruments for measuring medium and low pressures.

V. N. Gramenitskii has combined organical ly in his work the theory of packless-pis ton instruments, in which his original principle of a balanced piston has played an important part, with the appl ica t ion and popular izat ion of the results he thus obtained.

The scientif ic work of V. N. Gramenitskii is well known not only in our country, but also abroad. For the ref- erence instruments he has developed he has been awarded a State prize and many diplomas andmedals of theVDNKh

(Exhibition of National Economic Achievements) .

V. N. Gramenitski i conducts important work in the training of highly qualified experts in the sphere of m e - chanica l measurements and constantly renders assistance to industrial and scientif ic research organizations on prob- lems re la ted to the theory and pract ice of measurements.
