Welcome to you all to Chapel Gate for this National 3 South West clash
with Lydney and may I wish you a somewhat belated Happy New Year.
As you may have deduced from elsewhere in the programme, this is our
sixth encounter with Lydney in the League. However we do go further
back than that when we had four successive encounters in the 70s at
Regentsholme, the last three on Good Friday ending in 1976/1977 when
we broke the duck of the previous three games and actually won. However
it wasn’t until thirty-six years later that we met again, this time through
the League in National 2 South in 2012/2013. We missed each other
over the next two seasons and ‘locked horns’ again last season. Lydney
is one of a number of clubs in the Forest of Dean who have produced
remarkable teams playing at the National level belying their apparent
lack of resources. In Lydney’s case, as you can read in their brief history,
they have a personality making his mark on the International stage as
witnessed by the Bledisloe Cup for which New Zealand and Australia
compete. So a long association despite the distance and we are delighted
to welcome President Derek Pomeroy, Chairman Alan Brooks and the
remainder of the Lydney party to Chapel Gate.
We are delighted also to welcome Philip Day, partner in Laceys
Solicitors, and his party to lunch today. Laceys are one of our shirt
sponsors and Philip has been charged with the task of choosing the Man
of the Match. In addition, we also welcome another shirt sponsor Max De
Kment of Saxe Coburg and his guests. Clubs simply could not function
without the financial support we get from the likes of local businesses such as Laceys and Saxe Coburg and I am pleased to be able to offer our
thanks through the medium of our programme. Thank you also for your
interest in coming today and we hope you all enjoy the fare, in all senses
of the word, we have on offer this afternoon. You can be sure Lydney will
be playing their full part.
Our referee this afternoon is Ben Chadwick taking charge of his
fourth match for us on this his second visit to Chapel Gate. We first met Ben two seasons ago in the home game against Chard followed by games
at Barnstaple and Old Centralians and we are delighted to welcome him
back to Chapel Gate for today’s match. The referee adviser is Anthony
Swift making his first visit to Chapel Gate and we also offer him a warm welcome with the hope both enjoy their afternoon with us.
It is unfortunate to report of Andrew Kingswell’s sickening injury
down at Brixham last week when he got knocked out cold when going in
low on a tackle. Andrew came off second best I’m afraid. We wish him
well but we won’t see him for a while because of the nature of the injury.
Our thanks to Wyn Roberts who looked after Andrew and brought him
home. It is amazing how people rally round at such times and I was very
grateful for the offer made by Alan Woodard who was at the game. Alan
was the No 8 for the Colts when I, and I hesitate to use the word, coached
them back in the late 80s and he offered to take Andrew back in the
morning if he had to stay in overnight. They were horrors to look after at
the time but in fact they have hearts of gold.
Have a good day everyone.
Doug Warren, President.

Lydney
A brief history of Lydney RFC
Lydney RFC was founded in 1888, when there were already eight teams playing in the town.
The club drew its strength and many of its players from the local tinplate works and, for many years,
Lydney RFC were known as the ‘Tinplaters’. The first President, Charles Bathurst, later the first Lord Bledisloe, held the position for 70 years. Lord Bledisloe became Governor General of New Zealand in
the 1930s and gave his name to the Bledisloe Cup, the Rugby Union trophy competed for by Australia
and New Zealand to this day.
There is still a strong connection between Lydney and New Zealand, especially the Waikato Province,
and there is a regular exchange of players between Lydney and Waikato clubs.
For a town with a population which has only recently exceeded 10,000, Lydney has more than held
its own against clubs from bigger towns, and has a great record in the national knock out cup, playing
Saracens, Sale and Exeter Chiefs in recent years. They have not been out of the National Leagues since
the league system started.
In the last 40 years or so Lydney has produced internationals such as Chris Williams, Gordon Sargent,
Bev Dovey, Trevor Wintle and Peter Kingston.
The above was taken from the Lydney website and is a mere fraction of a wonderfully full and
detailed history of the club for which I have no where enough room to reproduce although I am sure
people would be interested in the history of the Bledisloe Cup. Suffice for me to say that we played Lydney before the advent of the leagues when we had four games against them in the mid ’70s, three
on the Saturday at Easter. Was the Aust ferry still running then lads? The first, however, was at the beginning of September 1973 when we may well have been on one of our pre-season tours. We managed
to win one of those four games but Lydney would have represented formidable opposition for us and
the sentiment expressed by former in players in the bar after the Cleve game when they felt, once
again, long forgotten bruises only reinforced the perception as does the fact we failed to score on two
occasions.
