Lorraine DOWNES CELEBRITY PROFILE Personal style: My personal style is about simplicity. Classic with a bit of an edge. I like structure, no fru fru or layering for me. I love wearing colour especially in block colour with black. Colour is my way of bringing my femininity into my style. Fabric is paramount. I love fabrics that feel beautiful to wear - velvet, silk, chiffon, leather, merino wool - texture is vital. Over the years I have learnt that quality lasts and less is more. Earliest fashion memory: Visiting my grandmother and sneaking into her room and going through her wardrobe feeling the different fabrics. She had a velvet coat that I loved the look and feel of, and a pair of gold sandals that I loved putting on. I would have been about seven. Fashion advice: Fashion is fun and it’s always changing. When a new fashion trend is introduced, if it doesn’t suit you, don’t do it, i.e. Short skirts, if you don’t have great legs, that fashion trend isn’t for you. I have worked with many clients over the years, let me tell you, the majority of people don’t just walk into a shop and find that everything fits perfectly, and that doesn’t mean that they have a weird or difficult body shape. The only way to get a perfect fit is to have something made specifically to your body measurements. Worst fashion moment: I think the ’80s was so over the top. My hair and makeup was the worst - big hair and bright makeup. Latest fashion buy: Black satin leggings. Can't live without: My jeans (I have about 15 pairs), and in winter, my boots and New Zealand merino wool knitwear. In the summer, dresses, I love wearing dresses because they are cool and so easy to wear. Favourite shops: As I am now living in Auckland, for me personally I love Storm, Yvonne Bennetti, Decjuba, Workshop, and in Wellington a favourite is Miss Wong. Style file LORRAINE’S SHOPPING TIPS:
