ward to seeing him again in the future. Finally can I send my regards to Katie Hopkins one of our Football Develop-ment Officers who broke both her wrists at ladies football on Wednesday night. I am sure everyone at the club wish her a speedy recovery. I hope you enjoy this afternoons fixture, and I hope you come back next Saturday to support us in our Division 1 fixture against Bildeston. Jonathan Warnock First Team Manager

First Team Notes I hope you had a great Christmas break and I wish you all best wishes for the new year ahead. We start 2018 with a Bob Cole-man cup fixture against Cedars Park who have had a brilliant season so far heading SIL Division 2, and in the quarter finals of the Junior cup having beaten us in an ear-lier round 1-0 at their ground. Although we lost it was a very close game but the fix-ture was spoilt by the windy conditions. Their manager Stuart Jopling is a local non league legend, as a player he was a prolific goal scorer for several local clubs, a genu-ine football person. It will be great to catch up with him again, hopefully this time after a Sporting win. We welcome Stuart along with all the players and offi-cials from Cedars Park. Today Ollie Chaplin will make his long awaited first team debut after signing from Bacton a few seasons ago. Ollie has played for the Reserves for a number of seasons and gets his chance as Floyd has taken a teaching job in Milan. Floyd has been a loyal player for the club making 221 first team appearances and several for the Reserves. We wish him well and look for-

Happy New Year. I trust you all had a peaceful Christmas break. Looking back over the last week or so the festive period often sees us doing things we only ever do at that time of year: dodgy jump-ers are worn; healthy eating is put to one side; we go to the panto; we eat brussel sprouts; we buy overpriced crackers contain-ing a hat, a joke and a strange red fish that tells you your character traits; and my car gets its one wash of the year. I also managed to get the worst cold I have had all year which has not helped the start of my exercise regime – never mind, there is always tomor-row. The football world also livens up – with loads of games, transfer window, dodgy weather, and leagues starting to take shape. It has been said that you should not look at a league table till after Christmas, and I think there is some merit in that. At the start of this year I am delighted to let you know that Fiona Ginn has joined us as part of our Pastoral Team. Going back to my exercise regime there can be many things that we intend to do at some point, but they currently have to wait. I have a growing list of ‘bucket list’ items to do be-fore I die, (whether I ever do any of them only time will tell) and also an ever growing ‘to do’ list. I like to convince myself that I prefer to spend my immediate time on higher priority items – let’s stick with that anyway. As we look into 2018 there are some things

we might consider higher priorities than oth-ers be it achieving something in particular, finishing a project, losing weight, getting fit, ending the season as Player’s Player of the Year etc. At the start of a new year can I encourage you to think about a look at your relationship with God as one of your priorities for this year. At one of ‘Life Questions’ evenings, an Alpha Course or a conversation over a coffee, we would love to chat through with you why we believe this is so important and not some-thing to be kicked into the long grass for another day. On a daily basis it is life chang-ing for me, and as you read the stories of Christian footballers in the programme you will see how it has been life changing for them too. Looking forward to catching up with you all over the next few months and as ever if you would like to chat through anything please do not hesitate to get in touch Take care and

hope to catch up

with you soon.

Reserve Team Article

With 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss in our last 5 games, Sporting 87 Res are starting to turn the season around. The early good perform-ances of the season with no reward are now delivering the 3 points they deserve. We are still struggling to get a constant 14 or so players week in week out . The players that wear the shirt give everything to the cause. The game against Westerfield United Re-serves saw us having to try delaying tactics to allow 4 players from our U18’s team to get back from a late kick off in Ipswich . With goals from Kerrin Lawrence and George Chandler in the first half, saw us go in 2-2 at the break. Unfortunately we stayed in the changing rooms, whilst Westerfield took a 4-2 lead. A goal in the last 5 mins from a superbly de-livered cross, from Matt Brown , found Wes Newton at the far post to head in from close range. The 4-3 defeat was hard to take as we gave it our all even if it wasn’t our best perform-ance. This Saturday , saw a visiting Ipswich Athletic Reserves side , looking for revenge from our 1-0 win at their ground, earlier in the season. A strong start saw us take an early lead, with a goal from our in form striker, George Chan-dler. The loss of our captain after 12 mins gave a chance for Kerrin Lawrence to show

his speed and strength from the bench. Within minutes he got on to the end of a fine , through ball to make it 2-0 after 20mins. George then hit his second to give us a 3-0 half time lead. A sloppy start to the second half, resulted in Ipswich Athletic pulling one back, and forcing us on our back foot with lots of pressure . 68 mins in , they got what their pressure deserved- their second goal to make it 3-2 . We then had to dig in deep, with the back 4 under constant pressure. Our midfield 4, had to look to the youth for the leg work, and the senior players to get control back . In the dying few minutes, we get a corner. Matt Brown was on the ball. James and I were thinking ‘keep the ball’ but oh no ... Matt had other ideas . With only Jonathan Goodchild and Olly Mann in the box to aim at, Matt crosses to find Olly to head home to give us 4-2 win. Kevin Orriss

My story - Lucas Moura

Knowing God is a comfort Paris St Germain superstar Lucas Moura grew up surrounded by images of Jesus – but only recently became a Christian. Bra-zilian international winger Moura, joined the French giants PSG from Sao Paulo in 2013 and has gone on to become one of the greatest attackers in world football. That year proved a defining one for the No 7 as he also made a decision to be-come a Christian. People came to tell me

about the Bible, Jesus and I did not pay much attention to these people. I did not want to know, and after arriving in France I met people who came to work with me and in a very simple and very wise way they were showing me the time. I began to have difficulties…I was missing home. I began to interest myself in what these people were saying to me and so I started to grasp God’s love for me. From there on, it was very fast and I be-gan to understand the message and I fell in love with reading the Bible and I fell in love with the gospel of Christ. That was 2013. I made my commitment to Christ in the same year. I am a much safer person; I live at peace with myself and with my future. I know that God gives me a secu-rity, a comfort and this allows me to be happy’. The Bible was instrumental in leading Moura to confess faith in Christ and he can relate to the character of David in the

At our First team fixture v Wickham Mar-ket the club held a minute silence in re-spect of David Murphy who died suddenly on Friday 22nd December. The clubs thoughts and prayers are with his wife Nerys and his family and friends. David was Mike Ginns best friend and I know Fiona and Nerys are very close so please remember Fiona during this tough time. David played a number of times for the A team over the years especially while Mike was the manager. There was a minutes applause at the St Mir-ren v Dundee Utd fixture where he was a supporter. His funeral is on Thursday 11th January.

Scriptures. He added, ‘ Well I believe that

David’s story is a bit like mine be-

cause when I was a child, I was

always the little one in the class,

always very small, skinny, and then

people sometimes looked at me

with a look of distrust… they never

believed me. I remember that when

it came to choosing teams for foot-

ball, I was always the last to be cho-

sen because everyone thought that

because I was soft and weak, I

should not play. In some ways, I

was forced to win by playing in a

world of giants, just like David when

he took Goliath. I think I can relate

to this story because I have beaten

several giants in my life.’ There are

several passages that I find beauti-

ful, but my favourite passage is

Psalm 139. This to me is very deep,

and very strong. Every time it

moves me and speaks to me about

the greatness of God and his

power.’
