The Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Division of General and Technical Chemistry of the RAS, and the Editorial Board and the Editorial Staff of the Russian Chemical Bulletin congratulate you on your sixties birthday. Being educated at the Moscow State University, you began your scientific activity at the chair of High-Molecular Chemistry of the Department of Chemistry of this University, worked your way up from a junior research worker to the Head of the chair, and became a worthy successor of your teacher, the founder of the chair, Academician V. A. Kargin. Under your leadership, successful investigations embracing both basic scientific problems and urgent applied problems are being carried out for decades. Your classical works in the field of macromolecular chemistry made you one of the prominent scientists and earned you immence scientific prestige. Your basic works on the solid-phase polymerization are widely known. Your discovery and investigation of abnormally fast low-temperature polymerization of solid monomers during the "glass--crystal" phase transitions changed profoundly the generally accepted view of chemical inertness of substances at extra low temperatures and were awarded the Lenin prize. Studies on the radical polymerization of a wide variety of monomers of the electrolyte nature are associated with your name. The results of these studies provided the basis for a new branch of chemistry of polymerization processes and made it possible to develop novel principles and approaches to the directed synthesis of a series of practically valuable polyelectrolytes and polymeric surfactants. These studies received general recognition. You have been the pioneer and the organizer of the research dealing with physicochemical fundamentals of the formation of interpolymeric complexes and interpolyelectrolyte reactions. These works played a significant role in the development of highly efficient polycomplex formulas for preventing migration of radioactive dust in the catastrophe zone near the Chernobyl' nuclear power plant. The versatility and urgency of the investigations that you carry out attest to your profound creative interests and broad mental outlook. Owing to your active participation, polymeric metal-complex catalytic systems (gel-immobilized catalysts) were developed and brought into commercial practice; a number of polymeric catalysts that simulate enzymes were synthesized; a new class of biologically active polymeric agents, including artificial immunogens possessing valuable practical properties, was created. Your are not only a talented scientist but also a gifted pedagogue. During 40 years of your pedagogical activity, you have daily imparted knowledge and experience to the youth and trained a pleiad of scientists and researchers. You are fruitfully engaged in the organizing and social activities. At present, you are the Secretary Academician of the Division of General and Technical Chemistry of the RAS, the Chairman of the Scientific Council on High-Molecular Compounds of the RAS, the Editor-in-Chief of the Doklady Chemistry, a member of many scientific and expert councils, foreign Academies and Societies, and Editorial Boards of Russian and international journals. V. A. Kabanov (to his 60th birthday)

Dear Viktor Aleksandrovich!

Your achievements in the development of the Russian science have been honoured with the highest government awards.

Dear Viktor Aleksandrovich, we wish you sound health, cheerfulness, good fortune, and new successes in science!
