One of the hardest things for people to do is be patient, especially Americans. We want what we want NOW. This characteristic is not just in wanting what we want in the good times;; we want it now in the bad times. And what I mean by that is when we go through hard times we want it over with as soon as it starts.

There are a lot of rotten things happening in this nation of ours and many of the things we face are not any fault of our own. And it really doesn’t matter if it is our fault or someone else’s, we do not know how to be patient through much of anything. We continue to face the uncertainty of financial loss through jobs, lower wages, part time status, bad market, increase prices of products we need to survive. We face the stress of the debt ceiling being raised…again…, sequester still going on, interest rates going up, government shut downs (maybe a blessing to keep politicians from working). We still face terrorist attacks, war, and Washington and lawyers taking away our religious freedoms. But I hope you realize that nowhere in the Bible does it say Christians will be exempt from any of these stresses. Jesus said “in the world you’re going to have troubles.” The value of our homes and stocks go down like everybody else, our family members go off to war, get sick, a tornado does not bypass a church or Christian community and our bodies wear out and get old like everyone else. In James 5:7-12 James is encouraging the church to be patient. Earlier in chapter 1 he talks to the Christians who were going through severe suffering and persecution for whatever reason and now here in chapter 5 he says, “Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming…” and then uses 3 examples of patients through the lives of the farmers, OT Prophets and Job. The word patient simply means to be long spirited or long suffering. We have a hard time being patient in ordinary circumstances let alone problem times. And it doesn’t help living in a society that encourages us to keep moving in this rapid paced culture or you’ll be left behind. But James says to be patient until the coming of the Lord. That could be a while! Be patient no matter what you face church because if we follow the Lord’s instructions, He will be faithful. Saved to Serve, Tim

Each month the elders will highlight one of NLCC’s ministry teams. That team will be thanked and prayed over at the end of the morning worship service and have a spot in the SOL This month’s highlight is the Prayer Team and the Encouragement Team.

NLCC Prayer Team, Philippians 4:6-7: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. We would like to express our appreciation for the time spent on your knees going before our Lord in prayer. I am sure there are many people in our church that can testify to the power of prayer, and have been on the receiving end of the Lord’s blessing because of the time you’ve spent on your knees. We can’t thank our prayer warriors enough for the wisdom, guidance, protection, comfort and blessings we have received at NLCC because of the time you spend in prayer! NLCC Encouragement Team, 1 Thessalonians 5:11: Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. Hebrews 10:24-25: And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. We would like to thank you for the many cards, kind words, visits and comfort you have provided to the people of NLCC. I am sure the Lord has blessed many at NLCC because of your efforts. An unexpected card or a few words of encouragement have the power to completely change someone’s day or week for the better. The ice cream was pretty nice also! You are truly a blessing to those around you! Your teams are both doing a GREAT job, and we thank you for all your hard work! ~ The Elders of NLCC

But Jesus called them to Him, saying, “Let the children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.” -Luke 18:16

COMING IN NOVEMBER IN KIDZ KONNECTION: TREASURE HUNT

It was a cool, fall afternoon and we had a couple hours of free time, so we grabbed my phone and decided to find a nearby geocache. The GPS coordinates led us to some greenspace in the back of a neighborhood. Although we were determined to find this geocache, it was hidden well and we started to feel conspicuous hunting behind people’s backyards. It became very awkward when one mom and her son came out of their house, and we were sure they were watching us push through the tall grass and leaves. We were just about to give up when the boy approached us and asked if we were looking for something. We explained and he smiled, waved to his mom, and said “I hid that geocache and you’ll never find it on your own. Let me

help you.” This young geocacher knew exactly what we should do to find the cache. When we followed his wisdom, we successfully found what we’d been seeking. So much of life is that way, too. When we look for wisdom and actually follow it, we’ll make better decisions in life. Wisdom is finding out what you should do and doing it. When we seek wisdom and ask God for it, He will give it to us. He will help us figure out the wise choice when we need to make a decision. We can find God’s wisdom by reading the Bible and asking trusted Christ-followers. The monthly memory verse is: “Choose my teaching instead of silver. Choose knowledge rather than fine gold. Wisdom is worth more than rubies. Nothing you want can compare with her,” Proverbs 8:10-11, NIrV.No matter how big or small the decision, God will help you make the wise choice. It might be tempting to compromise wisdom for quick and easy gain, but Solomon teaches us that choosing wisdom first is best. In Week One’s Bible story, God was pleased with King Solomon and offered to give him whatever he wanted. Solomon asked for wisdom (1 Kings 3:4-15) and was rewarded. Our Bottom Line is: God wants to give you wisdom. Anytime we have a decision to make or a situation we aren’t sure how to handle, we can ask God for wisdom. In Week Two’s biblical principle, Solomon, the wisest person who ever lived, teaches us to choose our words wisely. “Thoughtless words cut like a sword. But the tongue of wise people brings healing,” (Proverbs 12:18). Our Bottom Line is: If you want to be wise, think before you speak. When we’re upset or emotional, we may be tempted to blurt out hurtful words that we might regret after we’ve calmed down. Speaking without thinking can cause damage. But wise words can help. In Week Three’s Bible story, King Rehoboam needed to make an important decision (1 Kings 12:1-15a). The king decided to follow his buddies’ advice, and his decision led to a split in the nation of Israel. Our Bottom Line is: If you want to be wise, hang out with wise people. Proverbs 13:20 says: “Anyone who walks with wise people grows wise. But a companion of foolish people suffers harm.” In Week Four’s Bible story, King Josiah was very young when he started ruling (2 Kings 22-23). He could have followed in the footsteps of the kings before him and disobeyed God’s law. But when he found God’s words, he realized this was not wise. Our Bottom Line is: If you want to be wise, look before you leap. Proverbs 22:3 says: “Wise people see danger and go to a safe place. But childish people keep going and suffer for it.”

CHECK OUT WHAT'S GOING ON IN OUR SUNDAY MORNING PRESCHOOL CLASSES IN NOVEMBER

ALWAYS WITH ME This month, we’re introducing preschoolers to the truth that God is always with them. When they’re in the car, He’s there. When they’re at home, He’s there. When they go to preschool, He’s there. When they are making wise choices, He’s there. When they’re making not-so-wise choices, He’s there. He is ALWAYS with us. Always. As we unpack the stories of Deborah, Ruth, Naomi and Boaz, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and Daniel, we will show our preschoolers various situations where God was right there helping the entire time. Because they can’t see God with their eyes, it is harder for preschoolers (and many adults) to understand that He’s there with us every minute of every day. By learning and investigating these stories from the past, we hope to show them that God is with us even though we can’t see Him.

Dr. James Dobson's Parenting Devotion Faithful Role Models

Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. 1 Corinthians 11:1

Unlikely as it sounds, I (JCD) made the decision to become a Christian at three years of age. I remember the occasion clearly. I was attending a Sunday evening church service and was sitting near the back with my mother. My father was the pastor;; he invited those who wished to do so to come forward, and I joined them. I recall crying and asking Jesus to forgive my sins. It is overwhelming for me now to imagine the King of the universe caring about an insignificant kid barely out of toddlerhood!

Not all children will heed a call to faith that early or dramatically, of course—nor should they be expected to. Yet it is important to note that my own conversion at that young age was possible because of my parents’ example. From my first days, I saw them on their knees, praying and talking to the Lord. They later told me that I attempted to pray before I learned to talk, imitating the sounds I had heard. If you set a faithful example beginning with the day your sons and daughters are born, they will never forget what they have seen and heard. Even if they reject God later, the remnant of those early memories will be with them for the rest of their lives—and may well bring them back to the fold. As parents, this is our privilege and duty as outlined in Scripture: “Bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4, KJV).

Before you say good night…

x How is your faith example influencing your kids’ walk with God?

x Do you need to pray for a stronger, more visible faith? Prayer: Our Father, how will our children know You unless they see us seeking You above all else? By Your own strength, grant that our ways would match our words. As our children look to us as an example, may they see Jesus. Amen.
