Window Evolution :Pre-Historic to Historic

Pre-historic Man stayed in caves for security from wild

animals, total darkness

Initial equivalent of a Window was perhaps Hole in the

Stone/Wall to let in light, air , as also the Weather

elements

Opaque materials such as stretched Leather, Wood gave

way to Wooden Frames and Glass for light & preventing

cold draught

Indus Valley, Roman, Egyptian, Persia, etc – Windows

were known to these great Civilisations

Window Framing Materials – Wood MS Al FRP,

today uPVC is the most popular material

Window Glazing Materials – Wood, Leather, Painted

Glass, Float Glass, Toughened Glass, Self Cleaning Glass

Need emerged from human urge to be one with nature….Need emerged from human urge to be one with nature….

Historic to Contemporary Windows : Technical Up-gradation

Endeavour to make “Super Energy Saving” Windows….Endeavour to make “Super Energy Saving” Windows….

Energy became costlier in the first Energy Shock in 80’s

Countries forced to look at Energy Saving measures

Areas concentrated on :

Building Envelope - Improving Insulation

Fenestrations – Reducing Energy Exchange across Windows/

Doors, or, development of Energy Saving Windows

Adoption of uPVC Frames/Sashes, Weather Sealing & improved Glazing

(spectrally selective and low emissivity Glass, Double & later, Triple

Glazed Units, Inert Gas/vacuum between Glazings, etc.), Thermal

Spacers

Technical Up-gradation

“Energy Star Rating” concept for Fenestration

uPVC being inherently insulating , alongwith the integrated components to make

the Window, made uPVC Fenestration the “Material of Choice” across Northern

Hemisphere

1980’s onwards spread to Turkey, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, East Europe,

China, Gulf, Malaysia, Thailand, Iran, South Africa, Indonesia, Brazil, etc.

Parallaly Die development, extrusion & fabrication machinery, compatible

hardware , and the USP of Welded Corners, made uPVC Windows popular across

the World

Also developed to provide air/water tightedness, Visible Light transmittance,

aesthetics, no thermal bridging & condensation

Standard sizes allowing Production/Construction efficiencies

Now knocking @ India’s Doors also

Monsoon precipitation rates are very high in coastal areas

Combined with high velocity winds, impact of monsoons

magnifies

Impact is much more in high rise areas

Traditional window solutions only offer only face drainage

mechanism which is insufficient

uPVC Windows haveRain track: Elevated section clipped on inside track to

capture rain water and drain it out

Sill Arrangement: Prevents rain water from flowing

indoors due to air pressure.

Gradient Slope: Track at downward slope of 5 degrees

ensures that rain water flows out

Wind Speeds in India are Very high compared to rest of

the world

Normal breeze on ground becomes a gale force on

higher floors

Growing trend of high rises in India have raised safety

concerns

uPVC Windows has broad section, reinforced with steel

Can be further strengthened with a hurricane bar

Multiple seals stop air ingress

No whistling, no rattling

uPVC Windows – A brief Introduction

Page 16: Uwdma Training

16

Milestones

• Windows - Wood or metal prior to WW II

• 1954 - Germans extruded PVC frames facing

natural material shortage; bulky heavy duty

appearance

• 1959 - BF Goodrich Co. introduced sleeker

frames with lower prices and styles patterned

on traditional wood and metal windows,

ommercial beginning of today’s Vinyl window

industry

• A fast changing world & faster technical

advancements to address the changes , have

ensured that Window/Door systems are key to

Energy/ Environment Saving & Comfort in

Buildings of today

Page 17: Uwdma Training

17

Manufacturing

• Cutting Profiles at required angle

• Adding vents for drainage & reinforcement for attachment of fittings/hardware

• Corner welding & cleaning

• Assembly of reinforcements, fittings/hardware, glazing and seals

• Assembly of Window/Door frame and sash

• Making properly formulated uPVC compound

• Extrusion of compound into Profiles

uPVC Windows - Some FAQ’s

Page 47: Uwdma Training

47

FAQ’s

What is “uPVC”?Plasticisers are chemicals (such as DOP,DIBP, etc.) which when added to PVC in

compounding stage give a soft Plastic Product. uPVC means unplasticized PVC, or rigid PVC in lay mans terms . 57% of PVC comes from chloride/common salt (unlimited presence on earth) and 43% from petrochemicals.

How is the weatherability and UV Resistance of uPVC Windows?uPVC Windows beat all weather conditions – from salty air of coastal areas to

biting cold of Himachal. Indian sub-continent is subjected to high Irradiance and UV ray activity, which are the prime reasons for discolouration and weakening of materials. TiO2 , as the best UV stabiliser, is added to PVC in compounding stage, making the product withstand all weather conditions thrown at it.Further Heat Stabilisers are added to withstand high temperatures & Impact Modifiers are added to impart strength for higher wind-loads

Is uPVC Window safe & secure?Multi-point safety locking arrangements and metal reinforcements meet common

standards for forced-entry resistance .

Page 48: Uwdma Training

FAQ’s

What about fire properties?uPVC has inherent fire retardant properties due to the presence of Chloride.PVC stops burning when source of fire is removed. In case of Ignitability Evaluation test, rating is “P”, i.e. not easilyIgnitable/Class 1.In case of Surface Spread of Flame Test , spread of flame is NIL (attermination per 10 min)In a full blown fire, no material is safe.

• Aluminum being energy intensive and a good heat conductor – not suitable for Windows.
