As a rebellious teenager, I left home and became a mom at an early age – long before I was ready. I was angry at everyone around me, a high school dropout headed down the wrong path, living in a world of pain and disappointment. But I was determined to create a better life for my children. To give them a chance, I had to turn my life around.

It wasn’t easy – it took the help of several United Way agencies, including Charlotte Emergency Housing and Salvation Army. With their support, I got my high school degree, learned to budget, found a permanent home, made friends and got married. And I went to work for one of the agencies that helped me – I’m committed to giving back.

More importantly, my kids now have a bright future. All four participate in Communities In Schools. My oldest just graduated from Eastway Middle School as a straight-A student and has toured Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, and UNC Charlotte. Her dream is to get a management degree, study abroad in Japan, and return to Johnson & Wales to become a culinary artist.

But for now, my daughter is simply a role model for her younger siblings – because through the generous support of donors like you, I was able to become a role model first.

the results.

The most common question donors ask is, “why give via United Way?”

If there is a cause that you’re personally passionate about, by all means, give to that cause. But if you wish to have a broader, lasting impact, United Way’s Community Care Fund can achieve more.

The only way to produce lasting change for those most in need is through collaboration. Without the support of other agencies working on parallel issues, the effectiveness of even the strongest individual nonprofit is limited.

Consider the Community Care Fund as you would a 401(k) for retirement – while you may invest in a favorite stock or two, diversity produces the greatest results. In the same manner, United Way supports a diverse group of health and human services agencies. Together we strengthen their skill-set and broaden their reach to address all the needs of our community.

By giving to United Way’s Community Care Fund, your dollars have a broader, lasting impact.

United Way is one of the few remaining sources of ongoing funding for health and human services nonprofits – the unrestricted, sustaining dollars that keep diverse agencies functioning year after year.

United Way can reach more people to raise more money at a lower cost. So the agencies can focus on doing what they do best – delivering critical services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Through vigorous evaluations led by more than 200 volunteers – people just like you, representing your interests – we work with agencies to identify our community’s most urgent needs and the programs that best address the root causes, before any money is distributed. This process challenges agencies to constantly improve.

Your United Way donations even attract funding from outside our community, such as state and federal sources and corporate foundations. By being identified as a United Way partner, and by pointing to the outcomes measured during our evaluation process, nonprofits can gain access to grants they may not otherwise qualify for.

Why should you give via united Way?
