As we chase our first Club Championship since 1991 UWA

teams swept Perth in all Grades and both Colts matches. We

won 7 out of our 9 matches with the women overpowering

Rockingham 38-0 and only the Colts Green forfeiting and 4th

Blue performing well against Joondalup going down 21-39.

1st Grade continued its winning ways with a 20-11 score line

that kept the pressure on a top four finish. With three

matches left it will be a difficult but achievable run to the

finals.

Alan Kingsley picked up a further 10 points to lift him to 97 and should break the 100

point barrier this week against the Rocky boys. Tries to Dom LeSpierre, who leads the

1st Grade try scorers with 8 and sits in 7th place overall and Matt Shaw (pictured

scoring their tries) saw us end Round 15 with a 10-5 record in 1st Grade with three

games to go, all against tough opposition in Rockingham away, Cottesloe at home

before the trek to Allen Park for round 18.

Its great to see the depth this year and once again the benefit of having a good 2nd

grade side cant be appreciated enough. The confidence they now have helps players

when bridging the gap to play 1sts. All in the Club have their eyes on the Club

Championships prize and how they can contribute to this achievement.

Steve McFarlane must be acknowledged for managing the players well thru injury and

player rotation to ensure we keep good

combinations going. Well done to all the players

for the style of rugby they are playing which is

entertaining whilst also being successful. The

supporters on the hill and those that stay in

THE MIGHTYS—3RD GRADE DESTROY PERTH The 45-0 score line

Third grade are experiencing the rewards for the effort of late with back to back wins and the joy

of contributing points to the Club championships race.

Tries came thick and fast with a double to Paul Grobler, and singles to Mark Ashton (pictured)

Jimmy Blomberg, Rob Wilson, Lucas Meaney and Mark O’Toole in his return from injury.

The boys shared the goal kicking joys with Paul Chanu, Craig Best, Jimmy Blomberg and James

Marshall adding the extras.

Apology

An unequivocal apology to the Palmyra Rugby Club for comments made in relation to the incident with a Palmyra player in the 1st Grade game. It was not intended to suggest that Palmyra pays players which the Club advises it does not. It was more the commentary of the behaviour of the player concerned.

MUZZ BUZZ 4TH GRADE BLACK 1. Rd15 v Perth – Won 38-7:

The 500th game celebrations got underway before kickoff with TV cameras speeches and a picture of a bona-fide Hollywood star type in the blazer we trotted out looking as sharp as we ever have in our long sleeve, soft feel insulation devices, otherwise known as commemorative jumpers. They were great fun and we were regaled by senior members of the squad (not sure we have any other type…) with tales of the last time they wore a jumper like this and other things they wore around that time including but not limited to man perms and hedgerow grade moustaches.

The throwback feel of the day went on to include most of the tight five and The Mousse “taping up” and completed by a ripped up and boggy No 2 field that filled the hearts of the tight five with joy as it rendered such tools as a change of direction and speed unusable, thus bringing the game back to their level of athleticism, such as it is.

To be honest your correspondent does not have a great recollection of the game, perhaps related to the number of post-game refreshments, perhaps not, never the less the first half was a clinic,

Fabrice and Mitch showing some individual brilliance for a try each we set about giving Damo a fitting win to celebrate his epic milestone. The pack dominated the breakdown allowing us to hold the ball for long periods and we defended with vigor, the sharp support play was not limited to breakdowns, hard running in the midfield and some pretty to watch passing put Hardcastle over in the corner for another try.

Not long into the game most of us had a good covering of mud from the bog that was the mid field, most with the standout exception of Mikey, who finished the game with hardly a blemish, so much so that the Perth Bayswater crowd were calling for him to be tackled because he was too clean, he was heavily involved though, creating semi-trailer sized holes for your correspondent and Cogs to run into and over the try line. People were talking about the size of these holes well into the night… well I was.

I have no idea how Gohie managed to get over the line, really, nothing, just a snap shot of him putting the ball down, if anyone would like to enlighten me I’d be happy to hear.

We had a few changes at half time and during the second half and the flash and dash disappeared from our game, I’m not 100% sure on why, it may have been the two TV cameras in the huddle at half time or it may have been the heavy conditions that seemed to take a toll on our leg speed but there was some stout defending and without being brilliant we put on a solid show, 38-0 up at half time we finished 38-7 with more than a couple of injuries, making our line out splutter badly with some truly average throwing, the ball was wet and muddy and I won’t hear any more about it.. We also had some cameo’s worthy of note, El President Herewini brought up his 323rd cap and Mick Collis put in a very strong retirement appearance, I’m also told that Boxy played his last game on Saturday.

I would be remiss also not to apologize to super-sub Wolters who had not long been on the field when I in advertently used him as a battering ram sending him to hospital for some precautionary work and a script for something soothing. Sorry mate.

INFINITYS 4TH GRADE BLUE Desperate times at the start of the week, 20 players unavailable due to work, injury, holidays etc. etc. Come Saturday we had a team, barely, and then injected some assistance from the other grades.

Thanks a heap guys, much appreciated, Youngy, Morts, Dicky and Mr Unmentionable especially (and anyone else who I may have forgotten) We started the game in our usual disorganised style and before we knew it we had concede a few tries before we started to have an impact.

Then Dave T decided to go for a gallop and the opposition decided tackling him was not much of an option, and he duly scored the pie. Our game changed up a gear, the ball possession came and we attacked and went forward but were thwarted by our own inability to finish rather than by any special effort of the opposition. By half time we had conceded 5 tries but we were having fun and they were struggling so we committed ourselves to a better effort. And everyone did! We were all handling the ball, going forward and again our attacks were only thwarted by ourselves rather than any brilliant defence by the Joondalup boys. Anyway the try scoring machine Charlie got another one, and after a good movement which saw a number of good hit ups ending with Kang popping to Todd and then onto Dave L for the try. So the game ended 38-21 but the score did not reflect the time we spent in attack. Special thanks to Youngy and Mr Unmentionable who played the whole game for us at 9 and 10 at short notice. Thanks to the rest of the team a great effort. Let’s get a better turnout this week and win at Arena again!!

COLTS DO THE DOUBLE U/20 Colts won 42-12 with a hat trick of tries to Caleb Brown, a double to James Wilson and singles to Stephan Grobler and JBadenhorst to retain their top 4 spot. Next week is a bye so this secures a bonus point win as well. U/18 Uni Gold 20 Perth Bayswater 14

This week was a top of the table clash between second placed Uni and the previously unbeaten Pert Bayswater. Uni secured a confidence boosting win over Baysie prior to the finals. For thirty minutes of the first half Uni played with great shape and consistently converted pressure to points. Only some minor handling errors prevented a bigger lead being established. Uni relaxed five minutes before half time and Baysie showed what a polished outfit they are and exploited our complacency and scored a converted try just before half time. Uni went to the half leading 17 to 7. After half time Uni spent twenty minutes camped in the Baysie half. Again basic handling let us down and we only had three points to show for our efforts. Despite being a man down Baysie came back strongly in the last quarter of the game and scored another converted try. Tries to the backs thru Gareth Evans, Nick Wolman and John Newman edged Perth out All in all it was a great win and a great team effort while still leaving a lot of room for improvement.

Uni Green forfeited to Arks

With 17 players away on holidays and 2 injured we were only able to field 11 players for Green before the Gold players arrived in the second half. As a result Green forfeited to Arks. Green played with 11 players and Arks with 13 until the Gold players arrived. We believe that if we had a our full compliment the result would have gone Uni's way. Green are still able to make the Cup finals and with our students coming back we are still hopeful of a finals appearance. Once again thanks must go to a group of players in Green who have held this team together and been the backbone of the under 18s squad.
