A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hey everyone!

I want to congratulate all the new members who have joined our club this year. It’s great to see so many new faces! Thank you to those of you who were able to make it to New Member Induction; the club had a great time celebrating your membership and getting to learn more about you. We have also been seeing great attendance at events from new members this year. Thank you all for your hard work, this club couldn’t function without you! Believe it or not, we’re already half way through the Circle K year. Isn’t that crazy? We still have a lot of work to do if we want to reach our goals, but with help from all our members, and new members especially, I know we can accomplish great things this year!

Also remember that you can join the club at any time. Circle K has no restrictions on when you can and cannot join. We welcome new members any time of the year! I encourage you all to invite your friends or anyone you know who you think would be interested in the club. We want to have the biggest impact possible, and that takes lots of members!

Also, if anyone has any specific questions about the club or how you can further your involvement, please reach out to me! Circle K is the type of club that you get more out of, the more you put in. While that may not be for everyone, lots of you have great potential to become leaders in our club! Don’t be afraid to ask questions about anything.

Thanks, Rachael [email protected]

November is Kiwanis Family month! While spending time with your Kiwanis family is always important year-round, this month is entirely devoted to organizations that share the same goals and values as Circle K. November presents itself as a perfect opportunity to spend intentional time with local branches of Kiwanis. This

may include attending meetings, hosting events, volunteering together, or creating a joint fundraiser for the Eliminate Project. There’s quite a few branches within this larger organization, so let’s briefly overview each branch of the Kiwanis Family. Kiwanis is the “papa bear” of all the branches. This is a worldwide organization of adults who are committed to serving and improving the world, one child and community at a time. There are also specific Kiwanis clubs for senior members; these are known as Golden K Clubs. Another adult branch or Kiwanis, Aktion Club, empowers those living with disabilities to live independently while serving others. It’s a pretty neat group, and they love when you serve with them--I’m sure you will love it too! If we continue chronologically by age, our organization of Circle K is next. As you may know, Circle K is an international collegiate service organization. We inspire leadership while living and loving to serve others. Our lovely high school friends form an organization called Key Club. While Key Club focuses on leadership like Circle K, they also strive to build character and provide a sense of caring and inclusiveness inside and outside of their club. Key Club members may have been in Builders Club, because this branch of Kiwanis is for middle and junior high school students. Their motto is “Building leaders”, which establishes a great foundation to move up in the Kiwanis family. Last, but certainly not least, are our K-Kids! These cute elementary school children learn how to build character, respect their environment, and serve their school and community while in K-Kids. Each of these organizations are known as Service Leadership Programs, which are sponsored by Kiwanis. For instance, your UW-Madison Circle K Club is sponsored by the Downtown Madison Kiwanis Club. Circle K Clubs are also eligible to co-sponsor Service Leadership Programs as well! This was certainly a lot of information all at once, but I personally believe that the best way to learn about each of these organizations is to visit your Kiwanis Family in person. There are so many Kiwanis chapters all over the state of Wisconsin and in the Madison area. The possibilities for K-Family relations are endless! To view all Kiwanis Clubs and the Service Leadership Programs that they sponsor, visit this link. For more contact information and K-Family relations ideas, feel free to e-mail your fellow UW-Madison Circle K member (and Wisconsin-Upper Michigan K-Family Chairwoman), Monica Wang ([email protected]).

On November 8th Kiwanis clubs from all over the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan district came together for K-Family Service Day. There were members present from Circle K, Kiwanis Young Professionals and Kiwanis. The event was hosted in Stevens Point and there was a variety of service projects to be accomplished. The volunteers were split up into teams allowing members of Circle K to meet a variety of people from all over our district and strengthening the K-Family bonds.

There were five different groups all assigned to different projects. One particularly rugged group helped the Stevens Point Humane Society by digging a trench for them and also got to meet some fuzzy friends at the Humane Society. Another group worked at the Schmeekle Nature Preserve, staining pieces of wood and removing invasive species from the preserve. Groups were also assigned to the area Boy’s and Girl’s Club as well as the Children’s Museum, where members helped to clean and organize.

The last group of volunteers, and might I add- the best group, went to the UW-Stevens Point campus and cleaned up trash along their nature trails and in their sculpture garden. This was a great project, however, their campus is so pristine that there was hardly any trash to pick up! It was a beautiful day to be outside and enjoy the woods in Stevens Point and to connect with other members of Circle K. I was able to get to know members from UW-Stevens Point, UW-Whitewater, Alverno College, MSOE, and Bay College.

After the service projects, we met back at Schmeekle Nature Preserve and had a social event. We had pizza, treats, and enjoyed each other’s company. There were also some easy service projects, such as decorating bookmarks, while we had lunch and hung around. We had brisk fall weather that was perfect to work outside in, good company, and a spectacular view. This was my first time attending K-Family Service Day and my first time in Stevens Point, and I would highly recommend either.

UW-Madison Circle K alums launch inaugural WI-UM Kiwanis Young Professionals Club

By: Taryn Grisham, Kiwanis Counterpart

Starting out as a professional can be a crazy time in every 20-something’s life. Our schedules begin to change. The time we used to spend in class is (hopefully) spent in an office. The money we paid for tuition is now being kicked back in student loans. Some of our friends move to new cities, states and countries to start their new adult lives. Some of us find sanctity in Madison and want to call it home for just awhile longer. It was under this principle that the Kiwanis Young Professionals of Madison Club was born.

In the past, the natural step after graduating from college (and Circle K) was to join Kiwanis. Our club gives young people a choice with “convenience” being at the forefront of every decision that is made. Since the Madison chapter is the first-ever Kiwanis Young Professionals Club in the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District, we want to involve our members as much as possible in our decisions. Being a model club for the district is a bit intimidating, but we’re up for the challenge!

Our club’s structure is quite similar to that of a Circle K club, as we have standing officers and committees. The differences lie in the frequency at which we host different things throughout year. Our goals include the following:

• Meetings the first Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. (location TBD)

• One service event every three months

• One business meeting every three meetings

• One social event every three months

• One Kiwanis-partner project every three months

To someone familiar with the Circle K structure, this might seem very minimal, but our goal is to give young professionals the option to be involved as much as they want to. We understand that our members have busy schedules balancing work, families and other commitments.

Another cool thing about this club is that there is no age limit for our membership. As long as you’re 18, you can be a member. If you’re 78, you can be a member, too. We don’t discriminate, because everyone is young at heart.

We recently had our kickoff meeting at the beginning of November, which was really exciting for us! We are looking forward to seeing where everything goes. If you are interested in keeping up with us this year, we do have a social media presence! We welcome you all to “like” our Facebook page (search: Kiwanis Young Professionals of Madison) and to also follow us on Twitter, @KYPMadison.

In the future, we’d love to create some sort of a bridge program with Circle K that might help your members network more easily with professionals in the Madison area. We envision some sort of a mentor-mentee program that will help you all (hopefully) land internships and jobs out of school. We are still in the early stages, so if you have any suggestions for us, we welcome all feedback. Our next meeting is Wednesday, December 3 at 6:00 p.m. (location TBD). If you’re interested in attending, please let Rachel Leader (President) or myself (Vice President) know. We hope to see some of you there!

A Word With The Social Chair

Circle K International (CKI) is one of the premiere university service organizations in the world developing college students into responsible citizens with a lifelong commitment to service. Our organization's service partners include UNICEF, Students Team Up to Fight Hunger (STUFH), March of Dimes, and the Eliminate Project. We actively work to both fundraise for these projects and put in volunteer hours to benefit our city. Thankfully our Madison chapter gets all of this work done and still has time to play. Our Social K events this semester have proven that we Madison Badgers work hard and play harder.

This has been the best semester for Social K that I’ve seen during my time on campus. From team trivia to scavenger hunts and comedy clubs to ice skating we’ve really set a new standard for future semesters to exceed. We came into this Circle K year with a goal of four socials and already the MRF’s show that we have had over 18. Attendance for our larger socials has been outstanding with at least ten people per event. Keep up those healthy social lives! They say a college student can only have two choices between work, play, and sleep. We all know that Badgers give up sleep every time, these

years go by too fast for us to miss experiences or opportunities to grow from and share with one another.

I really appreciate you all giving your time to come out to make these events better than ever. These social events are not only fun, but they serve our organization

by helping our members develop new friendships and a greater sense of comfort within our organization. All members should feel welcome, supported, encouraged, and wanted. With that said, please approach myself or another board member with your own ideas for future events so we can work to incorporate what you want to do.

Live to serve but love to socialize.

Your Social Chair,

Austyn Chervenka

District & International News

Hello, UW-Madison Circle K’ers!

The past few months the UW-Madison Circle K club did so many great things in the community and I am so proud of everyone’s handwork and dedication. To just name a few things, UW-Madison had fantastic attendance at MAC and Kiwanis Family Service Day; you’ve done over 400 service hours since September; and in one hour, Madison Memorial High School Key Club and your club raised over $200 from Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF. These are only a few things that make the UW-Madison such an outstanding club. You all should be very proud of everything you’ve accomplished in three months!

Next, I want to talk about the upcoming district events. The upcoming district events include the Capital Divisional Rally at Edgewood College on December 12; Kiwanis Family Hockey Night here in Madison on December 5; Winter Weekend Getaway in the Escanaba, MI from January from 16 to 18, 2015; and District Convention in Eau Claire, WI from February 27 to March 1, 2015. I want to strongly emphasize that these events **are not** only for your executive board and district members. These events are for all of you. The purpose of these events are to give you all the opportunities to meet other members throughout the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District. The members are what make this wonderful organization possible! Please talk to one of your executive board members if you are interested in attending any of these events!

And finally, to the new members, by joining Circle K, you have committed to be a part of a wonderful international organization! The opportunities, whether it is service or leadership, are endless. When I joined UW-Madison Circle K this past January, I had absolutely no idea what I was in for and I could not be in a happier place today. You will get out of this club what you put into it.

If you have any suggestions to better help you, please do not hesitate to let me know. I look forward to meeting and continue working with everyone! Live to serve, love to serve!
