About the Author

Lena was born in Nijmegen on December 19th, 1984. She studied Medicine at the University of Amsterdam. Travelling between Nijmegen and Amsterdam during the first weeks of her medical studies she witnessed a cardiac arrest at the train station. Completely devastated about the fact that she could do so little to help this person or the panicking train personnel, she decided to pursue a career in acute medicine. During medical school she was always looking for additional ways to broaden her horizon. She was teaching classes in anatomy, emergency medicine and developed a 4-week full-time undergraduate curriculum in Trauma. She also assisted her father and Surgeon Peter Jiskoot in developing a curriculum for clini-cal officers in Malawi, where she spend 2 months helping with the project. After finishing medical school, she spent three years in London working in trauma and general surgery and critical care. She was also responsible for the surgical undergraduate programme for the Barts and the London Medical School during this time. During her time with the trauma unit at the Royal London Hospital she learned about clinical governance, auditing and how to improve care for patients. She trained in anaesthesia from 2013 to 2018. Being passionate about improving care for patients she found an opportunity to do a PhD in quality of care and patient safety during her training. She aspires to work as a paediatric intensivist for which she is currently undertaking her fellowship in paediatric critical care. She continues to do research and teaching next to her clinical work.
