• Ultraviolet (UV) water disinfection systems utilize light in the 200-300 nanometer range to disinfect water.

• Most modern UV water disinfection systems operate at 254 nanometers.

How It Works Part I• Exposure to UV light between 200 and

300 nanometers alters the DNA of bacteria and microorganisms.

• Bacteria and microorganisms become unable to reproduce or infect other organisms.

How It Works Part II• DNA and RNA molecules absorb the UV

light and dimers form along DNA strands.

• The dimers disrupt the RNA nucleic material, preventing cellular replication.

Required Conditions• For ultraviolet water disinfection systems

to be effective, water must be “essentially” free of the following:

• Turbidity• Silt• Color• Iron• Manganese• Organic Matter

• UV water disinfection will not succeed if anything shields the microorganism from exposure to the UV light.

Required UV Dosage • UV dosage must be sufficient to inhibit the

DNA of the microorganism.

Class A Disinfection• The ANSI and NSF require a UV dosage of

38 mWs/cm2 at 254 nanometers for Class A POU and POE disinfection:

• 38mWs/cm2 = 38 milliwatt seconds per square centimeter

• Class A POU = Point of Use• Class A POE = Point of Entry

Equipment Setup• Water flowing through high purity glass

tubes is exposed to UV light at 254 nm.

• The size of the UV light used is based on flow rate and the required length of exposure for disinfection.

Benefits of UV Disinfection• Benefits of disinfecting water with an

ultraviolet disinfection system include:

No Byproducts No Hazardous Chemicals Environmentally Friendly Effective Microorganism Control High Flow Rate Disinfection No Impact on Chemical Makeup No Impact on pH Levels Low Maintenance
