SEPTEMBER IS THE TIME FOR NEW BEGINNINGS Schools start (hopefully). Schedules go back to “normal.” People seem to be re-energized to get back to work. The summer season makes way for the Fall, etc. Here at the Parish, we will be experiencing some changes as well. Father Marco Brioschi will be leaving our parish at the request of his superiors, and will move to a parish in Manhattan. As you may know, Fr. Marco belongs to a religious Congregation called the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME). These generous priests serve dioceses around the world, but they do not belong to any one diocese. Their superiors move them whenever and wherever they are needed. Father Giorgio Ferrara was also a PIME missionary. Father Marco was ordained a Priest in Italy in 1985. In 1991, he was sent to Taiwan to serve migrant workers (this is where he learned Chinese). In 1996, he was moved to Manila, Philippines to work with migrant workers there. He served there for 18 years. In 2015, he was sent to Regina Pacis to help us build up our Chinese community. Now, he is being called to work with his community in a parish in Manhattan, which is largely Hispanic and black. At Regina Pacis, he gave his all to us. He not only worked with our Chinese parishioners, but also our Italian and English speakers. It is not easy for a non-Asian person to learn how to read and speak Mandarin Chinese. He prepared and practiced for hours just to give a brief reflection in Chinese at our major celebrations to make sure that our Chinese parishioners felt welcome and included. While he served all of us, he was “their Priest.” He celebrated our Sunday Chinese Mass, heard the confessions of the Chinese people, gave them lessons in the Bible, and worked with Sister Clara to build up the community. As Christmas approached each year, he gave the parish the gift of building a beautiful presepio for all of us to enjoy. He worked alone for months in the Rectory attic to carve out the pieces and make the moving parts. It is a beautiful hand-made scene, worthy of a Basilica. Even though he was in Brooklyn for his five year term, he served us with the true missionary spirit. He has even offered to return whenever we need him to serve our Chinese parishioners. We wish him well and offer our prayers to accompany him in his new assignment.

Welcome To Our New Priests

With the recent transfer of Father Nicholas Apollonio, Father Marco Brioschi, and Father Nixon Herrera, the Bishop has assigned two priests to our parish . We are still mourning the passing of Father Giorgio Ferrara. Father Gabriel Okeke will return to Rome to continue his Doctoral studies in November. With the lockdown, the corona virus preparations, the confusion we have tried to keep to a minimum over the last five months, I am happy that we will soon have some stability. Joining us on September 1 will be Father Thomas F. Brosnan who was ordained for the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1981. Later on in September we will be joined by Father Gesson Agenis (Pronounced Jason). Father is originally from Haiti, and was Ordained for the Diocese of Brooklyn in 2016. Both of these priests are fluent in English and Spanish and are good priests. Our parish is blessed to have them. I have asked each of them to prepare a short autobiography to introduce themselves to you in their own words. We welcome them with open arms and promise them our support and prayers as they begin their ministry at Regina Pacis.

-Msgr. Ronald T. Marino

Rev. Thomas F. Brosnan Born in Manhattan in 1953, I was adopted soon after by John and Gertrude Brosnan, and raised in St. Rose of Lima Parish in Brooklyn. I attended St. Rose Grammar School as my parents did before me, and am an alumnus of Xaverian High School, Brooklyn College, Immaculate Conception Seminary (Huntington), and The New School University. In 1981, with dispensation from the impediment of illegitimacy, I was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Brooklyn and was soon assigned to Korea for language studies in the 80s (This came to pass through the Diocesan Migration Office, then under the leadership of a young Fr. Ron Marino!). I served some fifteen years with the Korean Apostolate of the diocese, in addition to assignments at Queen of all Saints, Our Lady of the Angelus, St. Paul Chong Ha-sang, St. Augustine Yu Chingil, Blessed Sacrament (Brooklyn), Sacred Heart (Bayside), Holy Innocents, Our Lady of Refuge, St. Augustine and St. Sebastian. In 1984, I searched and found my birthmother, who told me she named me for her brother — a Jesuit priest (a religion gene?). In finding her, I also found six half-siblings with whom I have had a fruitful relationship ever since. Just this past December, through the wonders of DNA research and Ancestry.com, I discovered the identity of my

birthfather and met another two half-siblings. It has been a surprising and grace-filled journey: raised as an only child, I’ve now discovered I’m the oldest of nine! Over the past thirty-five years, I’ve been involved in adoption reform, contending for the right of the adopted to know their origins. I look forward to being a part of this fervent and dynamic parish family of Regina Pacis and hope I might be of service in ways yet to be revealed by that invisible, yet powerful hand of divine providence.

Fr. Gesson Agenis

My name is Fr. Gesson Agenis. I am 41, originally from Haiti and a survivor of the 2010 earthquake. I am the fourth of seven children of three girls and four boys. I play soccer and badminton. I compose and sing as well. I know French, Haitian Creole, Spanish, and English. I am friendly and love to be around people.

The root of my vocation as a priest

It was an Easter Sunday. I was at the altar serving the Mass, and I remember something the priest said: “Jesus gave his own life on the Cross for everyone, death has lost and Life has won. We have to bring this good news everywhere, to every people. We have to show what Jesus is like in every action we do…” At that moment, I wished to stay close to Jesus forever. At the same time, I understood that Jesus might be calling me to be a priest.

In the Diocese of Brooklyn

In 2012, I joined the Diocese of Brooklyn in order to continue my discernment toward priesthood. In the Fall of 2012, I sent to Saint John’s University in Jamaica, Queens to study English. In January 2014, I was accepted to Holy Apostles College and Seminary to continue my studies.

On May 30th, 2015, I was ordained to the diaconate and served at St. Theresa of Avila Parish community at Sterling Place, Brooklyn. I was ordained to the Priesthood on June 4th, 2016 and assigned to St. Michael Parish in Sunset Park, Brooklyn as a Parochial Vicar. In January 2019, I was transferred to Most Precious Blood and Sts. Simon and Jude Parish to continue to serve as Parochial Vicar.

I am very grateful to God and Bishop DiMarzio for giving me the opportunity to serve God’s people in the Diocese of Brooklyn. I count on your prayer as I look forward to the start of my new assignment serving the people of God at the Basilica of Regina Pacis.

Father Timothy Hirten

It is with deep regret that I wish to inform you of the passing of Father Timothy Hirten on August 16th.

Father Tim was assigned here for a number of years in the 90s and was beloved by all. Please keep him in your prayers.

At this time we do not have any other information to share with you. If/when more comes in, I will do so.

-Msgr. Ronald T. Marino

The Holy Father

speaks…

When we pray, God expects that we also be mindful of those who do not think as we do, those who have slammed the door in our face, those whom we find it hard to forgive. Only prayer unlocks chains, only prayer paves the way to unity. With God, nothing is lost! In Mary, the goal has been reached and we have before our eyes the reasons why we journey: not to gain the things here below, which are flee ng, but the homeland above, which is for ever.
